  1. Hey Guys, Thanks for the warm welcome to your wonderful little Forum, always good to have a spot to get that aviation fix when your stuck indoors!!! Sorry Kaye for not getting on the chat, I actually had my head on the pillow before I go the message!!!! Will have to catch up in there sometime soon? Dave, this little J2 was VH-PUK last year before I swapped it over to RAA. PUL is still about but I believe it is going through an extensive, long term ground up restoration, I thought maybe in WA but do not quote me on the fact!!!
  2. AHHHHH the wasp in the fuel tank breather, that seems to be a particularly Grumman thing. I know of about 10 aircraft, all Grumman's that have had it happen. As for the beacon, well surely your more visible if the lights stays on all the time ;) I would say it is the flat battery, takes a fair old amount of OMFF through the boxes to get them to flash. Just get Geoff to sit their flicking the switch on and off every few seconds!! At least your out there now and getting air time. I have been grounded for nearly a month trying to get my panel re-done to orig specs. I just test flew the Auster this afternoon after fitting a full layout of freshly overhauled orig instruments. Guess what, NOT A SINGLE GAUGE WORKED!!!!! No Asi, Altimeter, Turn & Bank! The oil pressure and pocket watch was my full compliment of functioning gauges. I was so upset after all the money I spent I only 3 circuits before stopping out of frustration!!!!!! Back to the drawing board for me for a bit! Dad is good, he had actually just FINALY had the six painted. Actually that's a lie he has had it started but needed it back so now it is just pure silver, still it's a start!!!!! Still in Melbourne and enjoying life the way he does. Sounds like you will have a good collection of baby hars and shoes ready to go!!!!
  3. I don't know any french so I will just say G'day and welcome to the forum!!!!
  4. I think you guys get to travel more than anyone I know! I am officially jealous! That's it I am selling up, buying a Grumman and were tagging along from now on!!! WOW, pass my congrats on to Kasey, well when I am allowed to know about it that is. I am going to have to refrain from posting on face book!!!! You excited to be a grandma? As for us, no! Have not got any plans for little pilots yet, to expensive to upgrade from 2 seats and Dad's has to many flying years in him to pass on the six :p Marriage though is going really well, I even still love her ;) Surprisingly so considering how many issues people told us to expect in the first few years *frantically searches for a piece of wood to tap* Considering in Motels we spend all our time together were actually sailing through it without getting on one another nervous to much! She's even going to learn to fly when we get out of this motel!
  5. Hey Kaye, Always nice to see a familiar avatar!!! I bet I did (Happy birthday by the way!) I heard on the grape vine it was on event! I would have come down for it, but to be honest I would have had to leave 5 months ago in the Auster to get there!!!!! Down side to being in QLD, I do miss Vic a lot, it's green!!!! How have you been?
  6. Hey Chris, Firstly I have to say what a magic looking aircraft. Really looks like you gave it the best possible life you could over there in Africa! Looks like most people have covered the answers on bringing it out here, it's not impossible nor necessarily impractical. I used to know a guy who bought his cherokee six out from SA and had it put on the register. The turbo issue everyone else has mentioned has some weight, but this obviously a high performance IFR machine and if you market to that category you will get some bites, the hard core GA pilots who have lots of money and go IFR like the turbos for the extra performance up high. There is a market out here for them, it's just not a huge one. For price as total ball park figures I would think somewhere around the $170,000 to $200,000 mark. I know it is a pritty wide margin I have given but thats because as people have said there not often for sale out here and so only really able to go off what a good lance or saratoga non turboed would get (for non turbo's I would think $170,000 is about the highest mark). Hope that helps a little!
  7. Hello Everyone, Just joined this particular forum so thought I would jump up and say Hi! My name is Louis, been flying since I was a kid and love it. Used to work in the industry when I was a little younger, learnt better of it and now it's just a fun hobby!!! I own a J2 Auster on the RAA register, (I uploaded a photo for anyone who is interested!) it is a fantastic little aircraft and I enjoy it a lot. Currently it is housed at Pittsworth in QLD, I live in Toowoomba. Guess I will see you all about on here some time! Cheers
  8. After finally finishing my Auster annual and doing a test flight this afternoon I am all pumped to get out there and knock up some flying hours and it just so happens it looks like I might be in line for a fortnight off in November. Something I have wanted to do for a long time is a take a flying camping trip, so I thought I would pose the question here (might need to be under the trip section, sorry if it is!) does any one know of some nice, discrete little camping strip in Australia? Preferably grass or dirt, somehow going to a bitumen runway to camp at seems a little bit refined!!! If any one knows of any beaches that are suitable to land on and camp at for a couple of nights then I AM ALL IN!!!!!!! Looking for the real deal, pitch a tent type of setup not a runway close to a motel!!! I am based in QLD but would fly to S.A, NSW, VIC so any suggestions are welcome. Let's see what ideas people have, I am keen to get out there in Auster and spend a couple of weeks away from it all, my wife even said she is keen so I want to jump on the idea before she has a chance to change her mind. So you guys help me with the location and I will bend my mind around figuring out how to fit the required supplies in the J2 and stay under MTOW!!!
  9. Well done, nothing beats the day you first fly solo, well maybe a couple of things but there not for this forum!!!! CONGRATS
  10. Only had a quick scan over the thread so I'm sorry if I am hashing stuff already mentioned. I am a no sar, do details flyer all the way! Obviously leave a flight note with a responsible person on the ground (siblings for instance are most definitely not on the list!) and give them a call when I land, try to use someone at the destination aerodrome where I can so I can get weather updates if required! When I am doing GA flying I even slip into Essendon, Mooroobin etc... without a plan, just call up at the entry and ask for clearance through, have not been denied yet. Only time I have been told to remain outside C/A is if I only wanted to transition through a zone. As for flight flowing, we spent a few years in the states and I did a fair amount of flying around Michigan while we were there. Flight following was about the norm for any trip over about 20nm! If you wanted to have any hope of flying in a straight over a long trip it was really the only way. The controllers just treated you like a VMC, VFR version of an IFR aircraft even though you did not submit a plan, handing you over where required and giving all the subsequent frequencies if need be. It was not uncommon to even ask the controllers for vectors, distance and time to your destination at current speed, like a radio operated GPS! It saved from your track ending up looking like a massive slalom course due to weaving between the hundreds of tower zones at all the airports or from cranking the radio dial every 10 seconds and requesting another tower transition clearance!!!! Apart from that have not used flight following in australia yet, so no comment on it over here!
  11. Hey All, Glad you like it and that it will come in handy for a few of you guys. Old Man Emu, there is no legal reason why you can not use this as your M/R, remember it is not a maintenance release but a maintenance record. It is even legal in a lot of cases in GA to use non CASA made M/R the most important things being what gets recorded and who sign it out!!! As for landings, if you wish not to record them there is no requirement to say you have to. I leave that field blank myself! More than any other reason it is just another field of information that some pilots/mechanics find useful in having. For things as simple as tyre ware, brake usage etc... right up to reasons regard frame bends and A/D's! Also in the case of a fight school it is handy to know just how many times the aircraft has been thrown at the ground!!!! Cheers
  12. Hey, I know this is a little older post but thought I would ad my 2 cents worth. I use Geoff Butler of BAIB, he is based down in vic but been in the game a long time and saves nearly ever one of his customers money. He is well worth giving a shot guys, highly recommend his service. His number is 0407 170 789 and I would just call him direct for more info. Cheers
  13. Hey Kyle, Thanks for letting me know about the lines. I have remade it with a couple of little changes one of them being the grey lines have bumped up to 2points. Should come out fine on any printer now I think!!!! Let me know if it works for you. Cheers RAA M:R Thick Lines.pdf RAA M:R Thick Lines.pdf RAA M:R Thick Lines.pdf
  14. Hey All, I have been using my own version of the RAA Maintenance Record Sheet for a couple of years now but it has always lacked a couple of the fields a proper M/R should have. So this year after just finishing the annual I though I would download the M/R sheet available on the RAA website. Now I do not mean to offend any of the wonderful people who run the RAA office, they do a fantastic job in every way, but I found the M/R sheet I downloaded a little well..... clumsy. I might be the only one but I am not a fan of the non blanked cell borders etc.... So I made another one that is a little neater and easier to fill in. Other than a few tidy ups it is an exact replica of what is on the RAA website (I adjusted the fields to also include a Daily sign out and only one time recording slot as well!). Thought I would upload the pdf in case any one else found the same thing with the standard RAA M/R. If any one wants to add custom fields etc... just reply on this thread and I will upload the orig file that can be edited also (just a note, I am a mac user and so it was created in numbers. I will upload an excel version for anyone wanting to edit it for their personal preferences but I can not guarantee it will export exactly the same into an excel file!!) Cheers RAA M:R.pdf RAA M:R.pdf RAA M:R.pdf
  15. You find me the plane, I will supply the pole!!!!
  16. Hey Davo, Sorry it took me so long to reply. Ruthven Street Motor Inn is the name of the Motel we run. 786 Ruthven Street is the adress, up near the hungry jack'a and charcoal chicken shop!
  17. Hey Pete, Took me reading this a few times but I get the point know, your purely talking about reducing your work load. I agree with David, (by the way AD refers to Aerodrome) leaving the QNH set on the altimeter to display your altitude AMSL means your altimeter will theoretically display what any other aircraft in the vicinities altimeter will be displaying and thus make it easy to maintain separation. As others have already said re-adjusting your altimeter during flight I would think would increase your work load more than simply adding a 1000 ft to airport elevation. It is worthwhile noting that you are allowed to "round up and down" the airfield elevation to whole numbers to make it easier, I do!!!! So if the airfield elevation is 1258 ft I simply add 1000ft to 1300ft, making my circuit height 2300ft. I tend to forget about my height once I turn base and just look at the runway for a guide. In time you will find yourself not worrying about all 500ft marks.
  18. Hey there is an idea, opening a flying school in Toowoomba. Sounds like a lot of paper work, might hole of on that one for a while. I agree a drifter would be a cold way to go in winter, but we have just moved up from victoria so I am not finding the chill to overwhelming! Also running a motel means the closer to home I can get the better. Where abouts is Coominya in relation to Toowoomba, also what are they flying out there?
  19. Thanks everyone for the welcome, looks like this is a very active little community. Thanks also Tomo for the references, I have spoken to Trevor out at Clifton and sounds about what I am looking for, but am also going to call a CFI out at Warrick and the one at Dalby too. Figure I will put my feelers out there and see what I turn up! Could not believe there was not an RAA school at Toowoomba, I thought with all the activity out here there was bound to some one about!
  20. Hello All, Just found this site after cruising around the web looking for ultralight flying schools. Thought I would take the time to introduce myself. My wife and I have just moved to Toowoomba and gone into a notel which will give me some good web surfing time, I figured this looked like a good place to get my aviation fix without getting to go out flying as much as I would like!!!!!!! Also while I am here does any one know of where there is an ultralight flying school in or near Toowoomba, also looking for some where to get a hangar nearby. I had heard there is a spot out at Milmerrin?
