  1. If he was flying legally in Australia under 95.10 then he would have had a pilots certificate issued by RAA and therefore relevant training that would have been logged. Ask for his log books, pilot and aircraft. Does the aircraft have a registration number on it? Should be 10-????. If he has has a training history I would think he would not have to do too much to convert to your licence type.

  2. With regard to the Tanami type fuel transfer systems : I suspect that there is little fine control of the fuel delivery ie can flow be safely interrupted completely at the operator's whim? I note WayneL uses a "ball valve" to achieve this but what then of the pressurised petrol container? (especially when the pressure is released - petroleum gas venting) Has the compressor stopped?

My flow rate is not super fast so the valve is normally open fully giving a nice flow I guess around 5 to 7 lpm. I just watch when the tank is near full then turn off the tap, stand off the wheel and turn off the compressor. It is only a small compressor and I have plenty of time before it builds up enough pressure to blow the safety valve on the Tanami "pump". Not much air pressure is required to get the fuel to flow. Tried a bicycle pump first but need to pump every 15 sec or so to maintain the flow....stuff that...the cheap 12v compressor works for me, but then my single seater only carries 34 litres total so the lower flow rate is fine for my purpose.

  3. I plug my air compressor into a 12v socket on my aircraft and leave it running while filling the top tank using the stop cock to control the fuel flow. Never really have the stop cock turned off and the compressor on long enough for the over pressure valve on the Tanami to blow off. I use the metal containers, don't have any sealing issues and don't think the plastic ones would either. My top tank is only 15 litres and takes about 2 minutes to fill. Before this system I was using 3 X 5 litre containers into the funnel, always seemed to spill some, now I don't spill any, very controllable.

  4. I use a Tanami "pump" with a cheap $20 electric air compressor. You can get the Tanami to suit the plastic 20 litre containers as well as the metal. I fitted a gas ball valve in the filler hose from the Tanami pump.

  5. I doubt oratex will save weight. I recently removed all fabric from a skyfox and weighed it. 6.5 kg including paint! This from entire airframe.

While on this subject I would be interested to here tips and opinion on how difficult or otherwise it is to remove fabric from a wood airframe? What is the best way to do this?

  6. Watch the first post video again and you will see he does apply up elevator and right rudder as the prop contacts the ground. The nose down rotation happens quickly after the aircraft starts rolling and seems to catch the the pilot out.

Question: How do the spitfire brakes work, do they use compressed air in any stage of the activation?

  7. Just watched 9's 4pm news which had live coverage of the landing of what looked to be a Beech Duchess with a stuck nose wheel in the retract position. The closeup vision from the news heli showed the problem but the news readers had no idea what the nature of the emergency was.......just kept saying it was burning off fuel. On touch down when the nose contacted the bitumen the news reader just said Oooh!

She just made the comment that the plane had to hover for a half hour before the emergency landing! Worst news reporting I have seen! Surely their heli pilot could have told the reporter what the problem was?

  8. Great weekend and attached is a short video of the aircraft that attended made while flying with Wayne L another forum member.

Nice video Mike, the run down the strip shows off the variety and number of aircraft there Saturday afternoon. Everyone there had a great time.

  9. A few more photos of aircraft at lakeside on the weekend. Also included some photos of the devastation cyclone Debbie did at Shute Harbour with regard to yachts that were washed ashore. I found it really hard to see these beautiful boats lying there...And I don't own any of them. I counted at least 3 yachts lying high and dry deep in the mangroves at the northern end of Shute inlet ...Do not know how they will get them out other than a big heli lift! From the air the Whitsunday landscape looks like the opposite of a drought. The trees areas looked brown and the fields were green, in a drought the trees are green (mostly) and the fields are brown.

  11. I remember seeing Jimmy Franklin perform at Reno 88. I really could not believe the things he did with that bipe, have never seen flying like that in Australia and probably never will. What made it even more exciting was the commentator, don't remember his name but he had the spectators hyped up....Best I have ever heard! Got a video on tape of the performance, will see if I can convert it to put on line.

  12. Gidday Martin, as mentioned above our bush flying is very different to Canada's west coast, Tasmania's SW coast would be the closest to your bush flying areas on the west coast. Summer heat and isolation would be high on an Aussie bush pilots list of concerns.
