  1. Particularly when Bedourie (further) can do it for $2.80. I was also disappointed that Birdsville has lost it's character. Fantastic strips, but security cyclone fence around the whole deal, so no taxiing to the pub. Gotta keep those outback terrorists away!
  2. Update on AVGAS prices from a trip completed July, 2013 (+ indicates landing fee on top): Bedourie 2.80 Birdsville 3.15 Bourke 2.67 Cobar 2.39 + Deniliquin 2.29 Longreach 2.31 + Mangalore 2.14 + Moorabbin 2.11 + Thargomindah 2.40 White Cliffs 2.75 Windorah 2.30 Ron
  3. The $210 is for a bundle of all Pocketfms products. The equivalent of ozrunways is called easyVFR and it's $60pa for Android or iOS, including ERSA FAC. If you don't need a flightplanner/nav system, the data only subscription for a Skyview is $160pa.
  4. Thanks Phil. I don't disagree about asking/paying a fair price. I expected a bigger variation over that range of airports.
  5. This thread hasn't been active for a while. Can anyone provide more recent outback AVGAS prices? I'm interested in Bedourie, Birdsville, Bourke, Broken Hill, Longreach, Tibooburra, and Windorah, but any others in the region, particularly if cheaper than the above, might be helpful. Thx Ron
  6. Hi Patrick. It's nice to chat on a quiet Sunday afternoon. The original post referred to a "nasty situation AND comms failure". For the sake of argument let me put a hypothetical "nasty situation" to you, recognising that it would be highly unusual but possible. Your passenger has totally freaked out and has taken a death grip on the controls in an irrational attempt to get back to the ground. You manage to get them to relax their grip with a promise to put down *immediately*. This scenario is not totally fictional and has been described previously in the Air Safety magazine. You're at least 30 minutes from your home field but on the edge of a CTR and therefore 5 minutes from the safety of a runway, and honestly believe that if you start talking on the radio rather than talking soothingly to the agitated passenger you're going to set them off again. You wouldn't consider 7500 and get down ASAP without a word to ATC? 7500 is after all "unlawful interference" , not specifically "hijacking" and as far as I know not limited to the heavy metal.
  7. Patrick, AIP requires ATC to respond to a 7500 squawk and if there is no reply to treat that as prima facia evidence that an emergency exists. They (you) are required to not necessarily *expect* a radio response. I'm sure you're trained to do lots of things in these circumstances but in the context of the original question (an unspecified "nasty situation") my response is accurate.
  8. 7500 - Pilot under duress. They don't expect/trust any radio transmission after that ;)
  9. PocketFMS has an Android App with fully maintained Australian data. Latest version is due for release this weekend.
  10. Unless you specifically want AX25, it's been done (http://www.flarm.com/). Gliders have been using it for years.
  11. Hi Mag, I'm a former Licensed Surveyor in Victoria and specialised in GIS up until about 5 years ago. No experience of aerial surveying though. Ron
  12. Andrew, it's not a scanned chart like OzRunways. The 49 is a one off purchase of detailed base map features (roads, railways, rivers , forest, ...) which don't change much. Without the basemap, the airspace boundaries and airports which you get for the 17.99 are overlaid on a black radar-like backgound. When airspaces/airports are amended every six months you can buy a fresh set for another 17.99. There's no AirspaceAvoid subscription as such, although PocketFMS subscribers get AirspaceAvoid updates included. If you want to see the map detail, you can install a PocketFMS free 30 day trial on your PC (www.pocketfms.com.au). It's the same basemap and airspace/airport data. Ron
  13. Earl, there are 2 ALA's at that location, YCAL and YGUI-Guildford. I'm not sure which, if either, is operational.
  14. PocketFMS runs on it: http://www.pocketfms.com/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=28
