  1. The biggest difference was the attitude of the GA instructors who had an air of superiority and elitism about them.

I've also witnessed this attitude at various aerodromes around the traps, never judge a person by the type of a/c they fly.

The GA instructor on the flight review made me do every single skill including cross country flight with diversions and lost flight procedures. It was a total of 2 flights and 6 hours.

Just had a look at your profile to work out where you are from, no luck, this school is definitely a rip off, don't they know the power of social media.

  2. If you look like you are holding for more than 1 hour, you go for your alternate, right?

In a word NO, depends on your fuel, in HKG due to the price of fuel in certain Asian ports we carry return trip fuel or the max possible fuel load to be at MLW at the destination, with only 60 odd pax the 737 was pretty empty, hence being able to hold for a few hours, also the tracking sometimes relates to ATC radar vectoring you or the need to avoid weather.

  3. No alternates in Tas?

It's not that simple, there are operational alternates & commercial alternates, in this case getting the a/c & pax to MEL would of been a more sensible option & I'm sure its the commercial alternate, also we don't know but the crew may have been out of duty hours & unable to operate once at Launceston, no engineering support etc, lots of variables.

  4. It's an excellent site, heading off to work in a while for a 2:30am departure from HKG-BUS, just seeing if a circling approach will be required, not this morning according to the wind map, I also use the long term predictions to see if any typhoons are heading our way to see if we need to pack up all our outdoor furniture & plants, in Australia I agree much better & more accurate than the BOM site, all they seem to do is put out severe wx warnings at the hint of a cloud to cover their butts.080_plane.gif.36548049f8f1bc4c332462aa4f981ffb.gif

  5. Hi SrPilot, went with orange which is now a standard color so no need to pay extra for it, having flown the Airbus for the last 17 years I love the side side concept & find the Foxbat very similar & natural to fly, as I said before all that Yuri needs to do is add a sliding tray table:laugh:, gone with tundra tyres & steam driven round dials, the last thing I want is glass & an auto pilot, I have to use them most days to pay the bills, this is flying for FUN, already have my build date confirmed, also opted for the BRS, having flown fighters in a previous life I & my wife like that last ditch survival guarantee of the silk letdown if required, been renting one for the last few years at Caboolture so only have about 30 hours on type so far but I love it, tried to upload a photo but its beyond my skill level.079_throw_pc.gif.e071c8f36d135c7f050383c74279afc6.gif

  6. Just starting to do my research, I have ordered a Foxbat with delivery in August, the a/c will be based in Caboolture & I was hoping to get some help from the folks up here in finding a competent Rotax/Foxbat savy L2 to maintain my a/c.

I am aware of the list of L2’s on the RAA web site, however I also know that with 35 years of aviation behind me that a personal recommendation speaks volumes.

If possible please PM me rather than giving out names on a public forum, your help is much appreciated.

  7. It’s definitely not as easy as it looks, as a checkie I get the second officers with a total of 250 hours for their first 12 sectors after ground school, simulator conversion & base training, thats 12 sectors on revenue flights, the main problem area for them is below 200ft, i.e. fear of ground rush, not maintaing the aim point & wanting to land outside of the touch down zone, late or now flare & trying to put the landing gear through the wings due aim point fixation or over flaring & ballooning as the select idle thrust, so there’s a very small window to correct the errors or take over, at least in the airbus we have auto thrust, add the workload of manual thrust into the equation & its not going to be pretty, fortunately most get it but some don’t & have to find another line of work, so expecting your average PPL to land it MMMMM.

  8. How about common sense & a realization that if you take silly risks you will die, its not rocket science, don't fly when the weather is crapy i.e. low cloud & strong winds, even if you can't read a TAF or Metar look out outside & NEVER fly below 500ft agl, even when you are at 500ft study your map for those nasty high tension power lines & radio station antennas, they will ruin your day. 080_plane.gif.36548049f8f1bc4c332462aa4f981ffb.gif

  9. I dragged this comment of mine form a previous thread.

"Guys I'm going to comment with my Instrument Rating Examiners hat on, "don't get yourself into a situation where you may go IMC even for a short time," even if you have all that sky view stuff fitted to your a/c you will kill yourself, it's only a matter of time, no one mentions icing conditions eg OAT on the ground or TAT in the air of 10 degrees or less, I know most RAA a/c have no pitot heating, once IMC what then, what's the MSA or GRID MORA that you are going to decent to to get VMC again? if you loss situational awareness what then, are you in a position that you can declare a MAYDAY in a radar environment & get radar vectors to cloud break etc, if in a non radar environment you're ####ed, it's only a matter of time before you smear yourself & pax into the ground, at least spend your money on a BRS rather than having all these displays & thinking your capable & qualified to us them."068_angry.gif.cc43c1d4bb0cee77bfbafb87fd434239.gif

  10. Just looking at the AVGAS prices on Ozrunways, now that oil is approaching US$28 a barrel or about 75% lower than its hey day the average AVGAS price has only gone down 5% in AUD, taking into account the plummeting value of the AUD its still a rip off.080_plane.gif.36548049f8f1bc4c332462aa4f981ffb.gif

  11. Way back in the early 80's I flew the Tiger Moth at the RNAC, when doing the conversion I was taught their way of swinging the prop for an engine start, you would stand behind the prop next to the engine bay, with one hand on the hand hold on the engine cowl & the other on the prop, this way even if you slipped you couldn't fall into the prop, image that, they taught (TEM) threat error management & common sense BEFORE it was an official course & subsequent exam. Bring back the 80's were sex was safe (pre AIDS) & flying was fun.075_amazon.gif.0882093f126abdba732f442cccc04585.gif080_plane.gif.36548049f8f1bc4c332462aa4f981ffb.gif
