  1. Make it all look like it used to. Ian, Right click on your "start" (now windows symbol) button and select "Properties". Click the "Classic Start Menu" radio button and click "OK" it will go back to the good old windows menu lay out. Just like XP or windows 2K.
  2. Put simply, lift is required for flight. Lift is created by sufficient air moving over your wings. Is the aircraft moving through the air? NO. Is air moving over the wings? NO Is lift generated? NO Will it take off? NO I can not believe the length of this thread, it is bloody amazing!
  3. Proof that winglets dont always make something look cooler! Its still been beaten with the ugly stick! The colour doesnt help either.
  4. It gets better!! http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=261195

  6. Prototype MKII and yes it is real and it does fly.
  7. Thats a really valid point Rufus, to operate at the level of rag and tube, it almost has to be a love job. If not it has to be coupled with another more profitable business. This is probably going to mean a decline in the skills base for rag and tube flying. Also attracting younger, newer participants is also going to be a problem, because ultra-light flying is seen in some circles as an extreme sport. In my opinion anyone who sees ultra-light flight as an extreme sport doesnt belong in the pilots seat. Heres the challenge, how do you promote and grow your sport without altering so much as to be unrecognisable.
  8. Is this an aviation based, "chicken or the egg" discussion? I think the idea of a performace based endorsement system is a great idea. Getting endorsements on only the type and performance of aircraft the pilots desires, not being forced into getting a standard of qualification you may never need. **COUGH GA! COUGH COUGH**
  9. I began flying at Mackay, QLD, YBMK. Due to the fact that we shared RPT, GA, Helo and flight training in one circuit often meant that the Mackay Control would ask you for a early turn (amongst many othe things). I was always taught that it should be 500ft. NOW they have 1981M of runway, which means even from an intersection departure, you will be at 500 ft before the end of the runway. Turning before the end is acceptable, if directed, because all a\c should be monitoring the local control freq. Therefore acting as a failsafe for their own seperation. Hope this helps a bit.
  10. There you go changed.... Another pic from the same flight
  11. Taken over the Glasshouse Mountains about a week ago. Texan 550

  14. And its dangerous. Latest reports both pilot and passenger OK. Apparently involved in line stringing. http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23510990-421,00.html
  15. OMG. Anyone in doubt as to where the future of the species is headed should be directed to a movie called "Idiocracy". The introduction sums up the entire movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upyewL0oaWA" Warning Not For Kids...
  16. Been in this situation, hit the throttle and went around. Also had a similar situation when landing on 550m strip on Keswick Island. Once you clear the western end of the strip you get a dramatic sink, ready freddy on the throttle. Push it up and go around, you can try a couple of times to get in. Taking off was even more fun. All this in a Piper Warrior. Altitude is your friend......
  17. I have lodged the report with RAA. Ill wait to see what happens now. Thanks to everyone who has offered their help and support it has been very encouraging just to talk about it with so many people. It has validated my reactions and thoughts towards this event. I will be taking a couple of people up on offers and will be making a few calls in the near future. Thanks to everyone. p.s. I work in IT for a living and I must add my professional opinion to this site. It is a very well run endeavour, Having created and hosted a few of my own in the past it is great to see such a useful tool being used in a very purposeful way. Well done, keep it up.
  18. I was taught the wing-down method from the very beginning. I was even criticized for using it by one of my later instructors. I think it comes down to the type of aircraft and the robustness of the u\c. The wing down method uses ailerons which keeps this control in mind for the post-landing roll out. Bearing in mind the need to compensate for crosswind during the rollout with ailerons. I have flown predominantly at airfields where there is always a x-wind component. I have always found this method, although more technically demanding to be the most effective and smoothest. p.s. I always refered to these methods as "wing Down" and "Kick Straight"
  19. The RAAF will probably give you a job. Unlike their superfit , lean, mean naval counterparts... (Go the Senior Service!!)
  20. As a newcomer to flying in general I think the push for more GA style aircraft is a boon for the industry. I think MTOW 600Kg will provide with more essentially GA aircraft. Whilst the category still provides for the rag and tube types. As more people get involved and RA flying becomes more mainstream, we gain more GA pilots. This means the cost of flying the "top-end" of the scale will come down, economies of scale and so forth. I also think it will bring the cost of flying down in the lower end of the GA category, creating competition from the top-end of RA. Do you want to fly in a GA like aircraft for 1\2 to 2\3 of the cost, in a much newer aircaft, with dramtically lower operating costs and ongoing membership and training costs? The really big issue is going to airside space becoming a premium. Real Estate will be the biggest inflationary pressure on our sport. We need more small grass strips dotted around the outer fringes of our CBDs. As with most things labelled as "progress" the more mainstream things become the more they lose their uniqueness. Bringing all of those negative effects with it, but also the positive effects.
  21. As an ex RAN Aircraft Controller the definitions (from memory) are. Mayday - Emergency. I am in immediate distress or danger, there is imminent danger to life. i.e. loss of power or control. Passenger in severe medical difficulties. Engine fire, etc PAN - Urgency. Situation requires urgent action to avoid imminent danger to life. Smoke in cockpit, losing fuel, low fuel, EMS warning lights, low oil pressure, fuel pressure. Hope this helps. p.s. dont ever think about appropriateness, just make the call. Its better to be heard than not heard. I'd rather be around and be criticised, than be dead and be criticised, at least I have right of reply!;) My only (very recent) mayday call involved a fair amount of swearing!
  22. Mike, Im really very sorry to hear about your loss, I grew up in the early days of GA in Ireland and know something of losing friends to aviation accidents. My mother was a lady flyer in the late seventies and this kindled my love of aviation. The help and support I have received here have been of great help and I thank all of the respondants. I really need a helping hand in dealing with this. I have taken my 8 year old son flying with me on many occasions and shudder to think what this could have done had we been together. I do need to talk this out with someone, no one involved has offered any help which has been disappointing. Once I find a new school (I still need to do my x-country endorsement.) this incident will form a big part of why I join their school. Thanks to all for the words encouragement re the landing, It wasnt my best but in hindsight I walked away with no damage to me or property. Can anyone suggest a good RA training facility in the Brisbane area, I don't really care where it is, I am willing to make the drive for a good facility. I would also like to get a Jab endorsement, Im thinking of buying a J230 type a\c at some stage. My mother offered me very similar advice about the safety aspect and my response to the emergency. Mums always know best, particularly those with 500+ hours!!
