  1. Last renewal refused by RAA because ID signed by a Cdec and not a JP. Too hard to explain the legal certification process so just went down to the pub and got an elderly JP (no official stamp or identifiction number) all good. It is a case of clerks just following the forms to the letter without knowing exactly what they are doing. Next year I will get JP with an unreadable signature again but it will go through!

    Interesting Frank . Their own paperwork states either a JP or a Commissioner for taking declarations will do .... Bob

  3. It was about 4 months ago. According to ERSA it is Security Controlled.

    Like Latrobe Valley which is also a Security Controlled ,according to ERSA ,with the usual 'security' measures such as 900 mm fence and push button 900mm gate ( always left ajar ) with the usual ctaf code if anybody ever bothers to shut it . The occasional RPT flight ceased many years ago when Rex pulled out . The system's a joke ...... Bob

     

     

  4. The only problem with that is often the hot air is unfiltered. I adopted a system of power up, carb heat checked OFF every time. Not a bad idea if you use carb heat often. Also don't wear a jacket with bulky sleeves. I got into grief (nearly) once with the heat being put on by the sleeve catching it (Side throttle and carb heat)Nev

    Agree , but as you are aware all Jabs apart from a few very early ones, the air is filtered. Jab drivers are spoilt in this regard ..... Bob

    I think this is probably going too far. But I take your point.Given you are in victoria, maybe your air temperatures are usually fairly low although I would have thought your humidities would be generally fairly low too. Unlike up here in tropics. but if you run your engine at about 2900 rpm as Jabiru suggest then almost constantly have carb heat on. This will thin out the air and have you flying in a constant start of partial power. Will change your fuel air ratios so you will be running lean and maybe too lean - getting hotter CHT's (or maybe cooler if you are in the lean of peak band. ) But I'm sure you get my meaning. carb heat has downsides as well.

    So overall there is a sweet spot of range where you should be having carb heat on. Not too much and not too little.

    Had a few instances where I suffered icing when taxiing prior to take-off . I now apply carby heat immediately after starting and maintain until prior to run up checks , which I do as late as possible prior to take off. In reality the only other time I apply carby heat is when on approach to destination ..... Bob

  6. Actually...the obvious obstacle hazards are, but it's the lesser known or appreciated hazards which trip people up. Losing airspeed in slow speed turns, flying steep turns instead of minimum radius turns, loss of horizon reference, and loss of SA per se will all contribute to an accident. The fact is ....... you don't know what you don't know!

  8. Trip Loxton to Caloundra yesterday.7.9 hrs tacho time. Stopped a Narromine for fuel and break.

    First opportunity to contact a plane on same track from Moree I noticed on ozrunnways 2200 below and behind.

     

    Great scenery just before Gatton, patchwork fields.

  9. Not everyone reading this thread would be aware that the Jabiru in question was factory built, its an important fact and highly relevant to the accident.

    Not sure why the fact that the aircraft is factory built is ... " important and highly relevant to the accident " FT , the engines are identical in both factory and home built, and both can be maintained by the owners ..... Bob

  11. Yeah but Ser #299 is pretty early........maybe why it made 1000hrs without much work7/16 didnt come in until 2013/14 I think

    Jet the serial no is 22 B 299 which I think would be a fairly recent build ... Bob

     

     

  12. I'm a great believer in training. Not just for the sake of it, but if it is dumbed down too much you are not given the "tools" to save yourself when things go pear shaped.

    I have for a long time believed we should have a set of exercises to perform to stay at a good level of skill. Just doing the things you are comfortable with won't do. Nev

    Having a good knowledge of your aircraft 'systems 'and the consequences of their operation ,enables pilots to be in a better position to diagnose, and often rectify or isolate, in flight faults ...... Bob

     

     

  13. I turned 70 last month and don't like having to tick 70+ . And my Jabiru costs nothing to run on account of how my wife pays the bills and all I have to do is ignore the occasional grumble.

    Yes I agree Bruce, in fact I can't ever remember paying anything for my Jab. , but blxxdy inconsiderate of SD , in fact I'm thinking of taking the matter to the anti Discrimination Tribunal , may finish up getting a few hundred acres off him . I used to have to show my Seniors card once upon a time , but now they're very nice ,and when I offer to show it they just say .... " Oh, that's alright Sir , don't worry ".

  14. I joined in the first part of 1988 and my membership number and pilot cert number is 001715. So it would appear that it was in numerical sequence back then. It is interesting some of the other members numbers though .
