  1. Not the information I was given by RAA. If you submit a flight plan you can be given clearance to fly through Sale airspace. I'm not sure how many other restricted areas are available but Sale is definitely one.

I never cease to be amazed with the ongoing and varied opinions regarding RPC holders entering controlled or military airspace . There should be no doubt whatsoever, that a holder of a RPC , without no other relevant qualifications and endorsements , is guilty of an offence by entering active restricted airspace . It is not the responsibility of the controller to ask you bona fides , but your responsibility to know the limits of your certificate. .Be under no illusion you are committing an illegal act ...... I`m using Google Chrome as my iPad web browser...For the RA-Aus Sport Pilot pdf, Login to the RA-Aus website and follow my explanation in post #9...Once downloaded, the pdf should be in the downloads section.

Frank , it was the last sentence that stumped me ..... What box blxxdy "downloads section " ?? Anyway I persevered, and after following your #9 and downloading , which was easy with my super fast ADSB giving me 10 Mbps download ,up comes a prompt ..." open in IBooks " which I duly touched and Lo and behold , it is in there , permanently to read even offline, seems there are several ways of skinning the cat ...... 3. There was a strip just South of Mt Jim Crow, which is between hedlow and Yeppoon. Don't know if it is still active, but they had a few hangers last time I flew in there. Very narrow strip, with tall grass right up to the wingtips and a normal circuit put you the opposite side of the mt. plus power lines on the approach.

Jeez Yenn ,don't you know it's not 'hanger'

  4. I usually say " today should be pretty smooth but, if you feel a little queasy tell me and I'll go back ", sometimes just saying this gives them the feeling that they have some control over the flight duration . Better to be forwarned and, depending on your assessment ,it may be time to hand them a bag ... just in case , but best not to stray too far from base ...... Bob

  5. I am not sure that we do need to know why in each and every case. What we do need, is to understand the overall trends and then focus on ways of minimizing future accidents. Reading detailed accounts of individual past accidents can lead people to have the "it won't happen to me" attitude. They read the report and there is some deficiency in the pilots decision making in hindsight it is easy to believe that you wouldn't make that same mistake. This reinforces the it wont happen to them attitude. The FAA have publication that discusses poor pilot decision making in the context of 5 hazardous attitudes. They Are:

Almost all of the light aircraft accidents fall into a limited number of the categories. My take on the list would be:

    Factors leading to Fatal Accidents

    • Miss-handled engine failure. It isn't the failure of the engine that causes the accident but the failure to properly respond and maintain control of the aircraft.

    • Continued VFR flight into IMC weather conditions.

    • Stall/spin low to the ground.

    • Technical failure of the aircraft. Johns list above includes 2 fatal accidents on first flights as well as one that may be linked to bowden cable issue.

SO the question then is what could you do in your flying to minimize the risk of this happening to you?

Nobody , as has been stated ad nauseam by me and others on this site and elsewhere , we really haven't found any new ways to kill ourselves over the past 50 years , we just keep making the same mistakes over and over again , and 98% of those mistakes are related to Human Factors . Presumably all pilots have ticked the HF box ,then maybe the course content needs to be revised to target, more specifically, the main problem areas which are well documented ...... 6. It's actually called Eastern Standard Summer Time, so we aren't confused. I work with US companies, so need to keep a chart of our EST, ESST and their EST, Eastern Daylight Savings Time, and cross reference what time it is there when the startup and end dates overlap, now THAT requires some study..

TP , Its actually AEST - Australian Eastern Standard Time and AEDT - Australian Eastern Daylight Time ... Bob

  7. While we are talking about asics I have a question. How many people can one ASIC holder escort? The reason I ask is our club has quiet a few members but I would be one of the only ones with a ASIC and if we were to fly to the likes of Narrabri or Moree or Dubbo I wondered how many I could escort. Is there a limit or if we stayed as a group would that be ok?

Please note we have no trips planned to any security airports at this stage but I have just been wondering and thought there is no harm in asking.

Fair question Sam , I think I would run that question past the Manager or ARO at the airport in question . I guess that in the end it is his decision, but I seem to recall that visitors can be issued with a VIC card ( for visitors ) but must be escorted by a valid ASIC holder .....Bob

  8. As an example I have just finished anaesthetising for a bariatric surgery list. Fat people having weight reduction surgery. High risk because obesity causes all sorts of problems. My last patient - a 55 year old 150 kg adult male with severe heart trouble ( each beat only pushes out 45% of what it should) he has poorly controlled diabetes and doesn't even check his own sugars ( never done a single self check though at least daily is the expected standard of self care). He has moderately severe lung trouble, drinks to excess and smokes.

Mmm , we are told that we must be non - judgemental about these things , however some don't seem to realise the consequences of their actions , or non actions , regarding a responsible attitude toward their own health. I admire you Jaba and your professional colleagues , for showing the compassion that you do, often in difficult circumstances .... Bob

  9. If you are using OzRunways, the recent update now allows tracking, so emergency services can find you easier, also others, such as family or instructors can track you live.A great addition in my book

Yes a real surprise Bill , one wonders where it will end, I guess the downside is spending more time fiddling and not looking outside . You will need a cellular signal though so , if relying on wifi iPad with external GPS and not having it tethered to iPhone , it will not work.... that's my reading of it ! .... Bob

  10. Good fun, of course this was done in the nineties when flying ultralights was more fun and we didn't have the do gooder, you can't do this or you can't do that crap we have now.

All that "crap" is designed to ensure you get home for tea Dazza . As they say ..... "the rules are written in blood "

    ....... Bob
