  1. Beats me, MM. Some hills in the background. Looks like Starke Field, Woodstock.
  2. Correct. The old one in town, that is - not the new Wellcamp Airport.
  3. You could read them in the original, but uploading seemed to downsize it too much.
  4. Not a real good photo - the signs on the hangars should give it away.
  5. Looks a bit like Baghdad International, but maybe not quite.
  6. The hint is the red dirt, right on the ocean.
  7. Don't know if this one's been posted before - it should be fairly easy.
  8. I was there a week ago, so it was still a bit fresh in the memory. Cheers, Willie.
  9. You're right, MM, I hadnt noticed that. Looks like the new livery; here's a couple of closer shots. The Russian flag and red star is on the tail, the blaze at the front is the VVS, Air Force colours, and behind that is the aircraft's name in red, all named after famous people. They've been upgrading the fleet and are planning to return to manufacturing quite a lot of them. Mainly as an interim measure until the strategic stealth bomber is developed. The Valintin Blisniuk The Nickolai Kuznetsov (so Russia has it's very own Nick Smith) Cheers, Willie.
  10. RAF Typhoons were scrambled in the North Sea to intercept and escort two Blackjack Tu-160's http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/raf-typhoon-jets-scramble-intercept-6426538 The politicians call it provocative and dangerous because the Russian pilots don't identify themselves. I would guess though, that the RAF look forward to these real life training episodes despite the cost.
  11. I think it's the prototype that they've stripped. Cheers, Willie.
  12. A few more: Somewhere near RAF Coningsby. Falklands. Zero graveyard. Lightning at Foulness. First Raptor. Cheers, Willie.
  13. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/kent-spitfire-crash-vintage-fighter-crashes-in-a-field-near-ashford-in-kent-10490077.html
  14. I remember a few years ago, they flew a B-52 with four of the eight engines running on a fuel made from coal. I think they gasified the coal and then converted the gas to a liquid jet fuel. To make it viable, oil had to be over $80 per barrel, so the idea is not sustainable economically nowdays. This was before the US shale oil boom. I had an idea the method was used during the war to make some type of fuel. Cheers, Willie.
  15. That's a good point, Marty. A lot of the time, design and development in different countries coincides because of programme requirements. All the major players in aeronautic design have borrowed heavily off each other over the years. None want to waste time and resources re-inventing the wheel, so they tend to build on known science. In the case of the Shuttle and Buran, the mission requirements are the same, externally they are quite similar, with differences in the way they actually function. I guess the way it goes with design, someone has to be first, then someone else improves it, or if the original design is sound enough, it gets copied.
  16. It makes you wonder if the builder was seriously trying to design something workable, or if he's just an eccentric hobbyist.
  17. Maybe Flying Machine is the best descrption. Cheers, Willie.
  18. A British drone enthusiast has built a helicopter with 54 drone motors. http://www.rt.com/uk/314394-man-builds-helicopter-drones/
