  1. Thanks Ian, yes many more, I even have my better half on side, but when i said about "her too", there was hot talk about pigs flying, what ever that means??? So my next question is how do flying pigs keep the weight down or are they VH registered?;)
  2. Hi everyone, Do not know if this is the right location? so here goes. today i took my first flight instruction out with Dave of Dave's flying school at The Oaks. The last time I was PIC was a C182 in 1972 and my VP1 1976/77. Today I was into co-ordinated climbing and decending turns, ordinary turns and wow i am hooked. I enjoyed the turbulance and when we got into some solid lift, couldn't resist had to circle and do it again. I did have problems with wanting to poke the nose of the aircraft into the sky due to the other aircraft having engine cowls a lot bigger than the Jab and wasn't using 30+ Lts of fuel, wow. Those old skills just flowed back, rusty but there, I am so stocked, I'll be back, to give Dave a hard time. My other flying was with the Navy and that is no fun bullocking through like a truck and i must admit a couple of times i did look for the collective. Bob.:)

Hi Mazda, sorry i am having a seniors moment, yes the air show is not the 26th, i had that number on the brain, from my understanding it is the 29th the Saturday although speaking to one member of staff there at the museum he said the Saturday and another guy said it was the Sunday????. could one of you guys that work/live there in Nowra confirm for us please.   5. Hi Mazda, I was at 817 Squdron that time too, just come back from Nerimba where i did the short Mechs course after getting my LAME's at TAFE in 1976. Hi Ultralights, that brings back memories, did the original Seaking assembly when they were new(well to us "new"). At that time I had just finnished building a Volksplane1 it was hidden in the back of tool control at 805 in what used to be the old toilet block, hum maybe the right place for that type of aircraft, ha, ha. Hi All, Just to let you all know the RoyalAustralianNavy Fleet Air Arm is celebrating its 60th anniversary October 23rd to 26th, with a lot of different functions and with an air show at HMAS Albatross(Nowra) from 1000hrs 26th October. The museum will be open but at the moment I am unsure of the times. The new White Ensign Club will also be open at the museum. Motels and other accommodation are filling fast. Bob.

  9. Hi Darren, yes Troy did enjoy it there was a contest to see who had the biggest smile him or the young people, I would not like to judge that contest. The rain was good, I shrunk two sizes in it but made up for it with the extra food from the BBQ - thanks Dave.
  10. This is not exactly a trip report as such but... Today(3rd February) a group of members(friends) of St.John Ambulance(NSW) went flying out at The Oaks, basiclly a TIF. We had some of the St.John cadets with us all the 14/15 age group, boy they were so keen and after four of them took to the skys in four seperate aircraft, well the grins were brightening up a very dull day. They were absorbed in the theory of flight talks and I can see them all coming back for more, a very rewarding day for everyone.The flights were restricted because of the poor weather but that did not put off these young people at all, even stood in the light rain to listen to some of the theory of flight. One of the highlights(laughts) of the day was a simulated "moon" of a Thruster pilot taxiing by, boy what a shock for him. The rest of us are back with Dave on the 17th February, we hope the instructors (and the two dogs there)will join us at the BBQ this time and not be so shy. We now have to consume another 3kg of cooked bangers over this week(thanks guys???) Some pictures to follow,I hope???? We would like to thank Dave and all the other instructors from Daves flying school for thier understanding and not taking Valium until after the flights, ha, ha. We try to get our cadets to try as many activities as we can, our aim is to give them as broad experiance base as we can. Hi, yes any expence, well according to my son(the accountant) that gets you the job is not a tax claim(medicals,text books,stationary and the like but any training to keep the job is, even if the base requirment is the qualification as you are deemed to be employed subject to you passing the course. The son checked with ATO about that and as long as the employer states that in a letter you can claim and legitimate expences in gaining the required qualifications, the issue is getting an employer to say that in a letter.     Oh I know the feeling???? A student became lost during a solo cross-country flight. While attempting to locate the aircraft on radar, ATC asked, 'What was your last known position?' Student: 'When I was number one for takeoff.'
  13. Hi, yes a two day trip ended up as nine days and visits to five doctors on the way, poor old(using that advisedly too) picked up a gut bug that was hard to shake. AND like all good wifes she waited till we got home to share it wth me too??????

  15. Toilet finder Hi Guys, there is a Commonweth Govenment wb site that shows all the public toilets throughout Australia, i will hunt it up and put the link here. Oh did you know there are 279 public toilets from Sydney to Ballina on the Pacific Highway? My wife has visited them all on just one return trip, ha, ha. Bob.
  16. While taxiing at London's Gatwick Airport, the crew of a US Air flight departing for Ft. Lauderdale made a wrong turn and came nose to nose with a United 727. An irate female ground controller lashed out at the US Air crew, screaming: 'US Air 2771, where the hell are you going?! I told you to turn right onto Charlie taxiway! You turned right on Delta! Stop right there. I know it's difficult for you to tell the difference between C and D, but get it right!' Continuing her rage to the embarrassed crew, she was now shouting hysterically: 'God! Now you've screwed everything up! It'll take forever to sort this out! You stay right there and don't move till I tell you to! You can expect progressive taxi instructions in about half an hour, and I want you to go exactly where I tell you, when I tell you, and how I tell you! You got that, US Air 2771?' 'Yes, ma'am,' the humbled crew responded. Naturally, the ground control communications frequency fell terribly silent after the verbal bashing of US Air 2771. Nobody wanted to chance engaging the irate ground controller in her current state of mind. Tension in every cockpit out around Gatwick was definitely running high. Just then an unknown pilot broke the silence and keyed his microphone, asking: 'Wasn't I married to you once?':confused:
  17. One day the pilot of a Cherokee 180 was told by the tower to hold short of the active runway while a DC-8 landed. The DC-8 landed, rolled out, turned around, and taxied back past the Cherokee. Some quick-witted comedian in the DC-8 crew got on the radio and said, 'What a cute little plane. Did you make it all by yourself?' The Cherokee pilot, not about to let the insult go by, came back with a real zinger: 'I made it out of DC-8 parts. Another landing like yours and I'll have enough parts for another one.'
  18. If they have been offered the job (and can prove it with written proof), on the condition they get their qualifications, then I believe they can claim it. This is a bit of a grey area though. I would probably consult with ATO if this was the case. However, tax pack clearly states that if the self-education is to help you get a NEW job then you cannot claim.

  20. Hi, Yes I got both, I intend to supliment my flying with doing maintenance work. I already have some work now mainly Saturdays. I just look at it as getting more flying in. I talked the Navy into letting me go to TAFE to get my civilian qualifications instead of having a "sports day". Bob.

  22. Hi, Welcolm to the group, i did the same as you but from the Navy on Seakings and the like, i applied through CASA for AME and got it! Basiclly because of the military background, a lot of paperwork to do but worth it. Enjoy the forum. Bob.

  24. Hi Mathew, yes i worked for and with your father, for him at the air training school and after with him on Venoms and the Wessex 31B and Iroquois. He helped me get my LAME in 1977 and "tinkered" on the Volksplane I built that year, he would not go for a flight though???? Bob.

Hello to everyone, i have just retired and had service with the RAN at HMAS Albatross as an aircraft mechanic working on venoms/vampires/gannets then "converted" to Wessex 31B, Seakings and all other rotary aircraft the Navy had, i built a VP1 in 1988, i changed jobs to work on missiles and torpedos with the RAN. with a recent downturn in my wife's health i now look after her and am keen to get back into flying, my PPL from 1966 i plan to renewthis year. Bob.
