On todays episode I talk with Tim Heylbut (Forum Member) who is a WW1 replica aircraft owner and author of a great book called ‘The Diary of Jack Flyer’. We talk about a number of things including his love of his replica Nieuport 11 aircraft, flying single seat ultralight aircraft for the first time and his new initiative to try to get more pilots out flying their aircraft.

What do you guys think of the future of CAO 95.10 aircraft within Australia?

How can we get more people involved in flying in Australia?

  2. Adam,I have become a fan of your podcasts recently. I have never downloaded a podcast before but after seeing your posts on this forum have been saving them and listen on the 6 hour drive to my gliding club.

They are all interesting and make a long journey enjoyable. Keep them coming.

May I suggest an interview with Ingo Renner, an Australian glider pilo, with 30,000 hours in gliders, 4 times world champion and recipient of the FAI Lilienthal medal.

Its great that you have taken the time to listen! I too have quite a long drive to my flight lessons (3 hour round trip) but 6 hours, wow.

if you like my podcast you will love the other veteran aviation podcasts. They are a pleasure to listen too.

    My favourites are:

    Plane crazy down under

    airplane geeks

    stuck mike

    uncontrolled airspace

There are so many good podcasts out there to help make your drive bearable.

Thanks again and enjoy the flying.

Will def do my best to get ingo on the show

  3. Hello, I've been a lurker for a while but now that I have joined RA-Aus I thought it time to sign up. I started lessons in a Foxbat last weekend and loved it. After about 5 years in gliders (with some rather large gaps in between), I've thrown myself back into gliding and learning to fly power at the same time. Really pleased to be doing both and looking forward to learning lots from the forum.

Welcome. They say starting out on gliders is the best way to learn!

I have only recently started out as well and have been flying jabirus.

I have been up in a foxbat and loved it, great visibility.

Best of luck with your training.

  4. Hi all, after spending days looking at the forum it is probably time to do the jump.

Xavier from Darwin, flying a homebuild Savannah VG 80HP from YMKT, working on the Nav Endo at present in the beautiful Top End.

    Cheers,

    Xavier

Welcome, I would be interested to hear some updates about your nav endorsement as I am starting mine soon.

  5. Welcome Joe, Dallas native here - where do you fly out of?And, yes.. you will unfortunately find that one of the quickest ways to start Opinions flying is the mere mention of a Jab engine - even out of context... its just a touchy subject... have a look at some other threads and you'll see... end of the day though its just spirited debate and we'd all (mostly) be happy to share a beer in person if not for the distances.

Stick around and feel free to dish it out too, we can take it! That RV's gonna be nice...

Nice comment to put things in perspective.

At the end of the day your going to have an rv to cruise around in! Who cares whether it is powered by a rotax or jabiru engine (I fly jabirus all the time). Its going to be an rv! Some people never get the chance to own their own aircraft, especially one with the rvs pedigree and performance.

    Enjoy!

  9. Well the Tecnam is designed to run on premium unleaded 95 RON minimum, (100hp Rotax) but can be run on avgas as long as you change the oil more regular.I was in NZ last time off 2weeks ago and standard unleaded there was between $1.88 to $2.00 a litre so I would hate to see what premium unleaded and avgas costs.

    Alf

I should have known that about the mogas! Yeah they certainly are unlucky to have some of the worlds highest petrol prices.

  10. Adam,Not sure where Rick got the 120 kt cruise from, mine was 544 kg until I upgraded it to 600kg.

At 544 kg the top of green on the ASI was 115 kts and then went in to the yellow arc after that and the VNE was 154 kts, with the 600 kg upgrade the top of green came back to 110 kts & the VNE to 136 kts with the increased weight.

Don't get me wrong it will do 120 kts easy straight and level at about 22 lph but your flying in the early stages of the yellow arc which is not my cup of tea.

I usually poke around between 95 & 105 with a fuel burn of between 15lph & 19 lph depending on which speed I fly at.

And yes they are a beautifully built aircraft.

    Cheers

    Alf

Interesting. I will have to ask rick about this next time I chat with him. with avgas at the price it is I would be cruising a bit slower as well if it was just local area flying.

    Cheers
