On todays episode I go over the 'ditch' to chat with Rick Watson who is a Recreational pilot and captain of a flying club (Hauraki Aeroclub) based in New Zealand. Rick and I have a great chat about a number of things including Tecnam aircraft, the awesome scenery in New Zealand from the air and the joys of crosswind landings (see below).

What do you guys think of the Tecnam P2002 that Rick loves?

  2. Hello all, I thought I would share some photos of the Savannah S I'm building after recently picking up from Brisbane which nearly cost me a divorce but she has come around to the idea and is showing an interest in the building. Haven't told the her it doesn't come with a motor so Round 2 could be on the cards. On first opening the crate and seeing all those bits and pieces I felt quite overwhelmed ans wonder what I got myself into.

A friend reckon mended Alodine all the parts to guard against corrosion and luckily I had a mate who was in the power coating and Alodining business and was allow to come in to dip all the parts which was a big job in itself.

The first Photo is Alan fry giving me a hand with the dipping process.

Great choice! I like that its such a solid looking aircraft. Best of luck

  3.

    Very interesting post.

I certainly could think of better things to do with 800 pounds but I guess its all personal choice and if you have the 'play money' for this then why not.

Another way to blow some cash would be to do what Andy did in Russia - Check out 37:30 of this youtube video for Andy's flight.

Would you trust that the jets are maintained well enough to do this?

  4. i decided to make this video just an approach and departure time-lapse as the nature of this lesson was repetitive.A few things before the link is posted, I expected to have an audio adapter prior to this lesson, but that didn't happen. so all i've done is removed/lowered the music at takeoff and landing. so sorry about that!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWpKXYmEgRc

as always subscribe/like/comment to keep me motivated to make various videos in the future :D

Nice video. Glad to see that you are getting to fly regularly! Looked like a very smooth landing and nicer weather this time.

Would be interesting if you could somehow show some of the ATIS information (i.e.: wing direction and speed) on the screen for each takeoff and landing to see what conditions you are encountering or just put them in the show notes (don't worry if this is too much hassle)?

    Keep up the great work!

  5. To be honest, I don't really remember one part standing out more than another. I really just couldn't put the book down. Wish I could single out a couple of points for you. Great podcast too, btw. Really enjoyed it, keep up the great work!

    Thanks.

Have some interesting interviews lined up for this weekend:

    - interview with an aerobatic pilot and flight school owner

    - interview with a cirrus instructor and glass cockpit expert

    Shoukd be interesting!

  6. Welcome!1. Sure, a Jabiru would be perfect for that (or any other) - once you have your recreational certificate (for RAAus, separate/different from the CASA RPL) and a passenger and cross-country endorsement, you can go anywhere in the country outside of controlled airspace!

    2.

    3. If you are after the certificate (not the licence), then all you require is a self-assessment form stating that you are of sufficient physical condition to operate a car. If you are going for the licence, you would be looking at a class 2 medical, and I don't think those check your hearing to any great degree - my DAME just whispered a few words across the room and I was able to hear it. If you are going for class 1, then yeah you have to do the thing in the booth with the headphones. Age is not an issue (at our age anyway)

look into the differences between the licence and the certificate, as they are 2 different things - but either way they'd be perfect for what you want!

    Great advice!

  7. Hi I have just joined here and am really looking forward to getting into some flying.I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a bit of Info

    1. Since I live in Jabiru I thought it would be perfect if I could get a recreational licence and possibly even buy a recreational air craft like a Jabiru. My plan would be to mainly explore Arnham land. I would also like to fly from Jabiru to Gove to visit friends. Wondering can I do all that on a recreational licence or am I bet to get a PPL

    2. Are there any flight schools in the Darwin region as I cant seem to find any?

    3. I am 48 now and my hearing has never been great. Will high frequency hearing damage and my age affect my chances of getting a licence?

    Cheers

    Welcome!

I agree with all of ayavners comments.

Also jabs are awesome in my humble opinion! At the end of the day when you make your decision on ra v rpl/ppl start as soon as you can as flight training always takes longer than you think.

    Best of luck

  8. Hello AllJust retired and home after 30 years working overseas.

I harbour a wish to build an aircraft. Presently thinking the Glasair Sportsman with the Diesel (runs on Jet A1) engine may be an interesting option. Tail wheel with big bush wheels. 130KTAS @ 20 lph seems a reasonable compromise for the cash strapped retiree. http://www.glasairaviation.com/sportsman.html Comments? Suggestions?

Still a couple of years off though and time for lots of mind changing.

Meanwhile onto the more mundane matter of getting an ASIC ...( Whatever the hell that is) and to get current again and do some local flying.

    Cheers

    Niels

    Welcome!

Sounds like a great idea! That glasair looks awesome. I bet you cosomeould civet some ground at 130 knots.

have you looked at the rv range. They seem like they may suit your requirement.

I like this website for aircraft reviews:

  9. PeopleIn another thread I talked about the Ops Managers column in the May Sports Pilot.

Our CEO has had the magazine digitized and has allowed board members to post the linkage a bit wider... I presume if you are on this forum then internet access is not an issue and the ability to read a digital magazine is not technically limited.... So fill your boots:-

    Thanks andy.

I had no problem reading it. I like the option to read it online now as its available wherever your tablet and ipad is.

  11. Thanks for the welcome!I have dicided to go with Yarra Vally flight traning at Coldstream. Yesterday i had my first lesson in the Cessna 152. It was a bit overwelming at the start but once we where up there it went all good. Loved it. The start is there! Next sunday i have my next lesson! Very excited:)

Well done, the 152 looks like a great aircraft to learn in. Cant wait to hear more!

  12. Not so impressed with Matt Hall, he arrived at an airshow and asked me where he could get some tie down equipment. He wasn't prepared and he blamed "them" for not puting tie downs in the plane. My take on this is that the Pilot in comand has to be responsible, especially when he is preaching good airmanship.

Thanks for the comment Yenn! Appreciate your feedback/comments any time!

  15. Hello everybody! My name is Thimo and i'm 26 years. Last year I moved from the Netherlands to Australia and I'm now living in Lilydale. Back in the Netherlands I did an aviation operations study and have worked for KLM Load Control for the last 4 years. I'm a big aviation enthusiast and have flown a lot of different aircraft types as a passenger but now its time to start flying myself and I would like to start flight training soon. At the moment I'm looking to fly either at Lilydale or at Coldstream to get my lessons. Any advice or experiences are welcome. Maybe there are also members of the aero clubs on here? The social part is also an important one for me.

I hope to meet you all in the Yarra Valley sometime!

    Thimo

Best of luck! Have you booked in for your trial instructional flight yet?
