  1. I probably should have posted it earlier but we did a leak down a couple of weeks ago and found the head to barrel seal leaking on the two centre cylinders. They were lapped in again and now runinng "smooth as" once again . The L3 that did the job said that all the rest were fine and valves were good. 450 hours on the engine This week the fuel pump gasket blew and was leaking oil around the engine. An easy fix once the gaskets arrived.

    Which Battery

The PC625 Odyssey battery is fitted by the factory · 625 cranking amps for 5 seconds · 545 cranking amps for 10 seconds · 480 cranking amps for 20 seconds Our first two batteries lasted just 12 months each and after some consultation with Odyssey (as they have a two year warranty) they determined that the batteries were not being sufficiently recharged after each use. In the Jab with all the electronics on ( radio, transponder, intercom, gyros, strobe, etc) there is a considerable current drain and very little charging of the battery and it seems that unless a flight time is over two hours there is not enough charge put back into the battery to replace what was used to start the engine especially in winter when using W100. We were having problems when most of the flights were only for a short duration, usually an hour or less. We now charge the battery on a charger at least once a month and have found that the problem has disappeared. The current battery is now nearly two years and going well. The price from battery world was just over $200
  4. Well they are not here and I would hope not flying as where do they get notams, weather etc
  5. I use a number of devices My laptop has all the reader programs installed though i do not actually use it much as a reader. I have a Sony ebook reader which is excellent mainly for its portability and battery life . I also have a HP tablet PC which is probably the most used because of its versatility in also being a PC. I even have a number of books on my pda for reading on public transport etc. The smaller screen of the pda takes a wee bit of getting use to but is an excellent compromise while travelling. its not hard to have a hundred different books and magazines available on your pda sd card to provide entertainment when travelling and it is also your phone and database.
  6. Personally I am all for digital There is very little need nowadays for paper publications I even buy all my fiction as ebooks and unless a magazine is available in electronic format i will only buy it if iabsolutely need it. My ebook reader is very long lasting with batteries and quick to charge . With a laptop and a reader i have thousands of books and other publications that are easy to carry and read. If your eyes are not real good at night it is simple to up the print size to suit the light conditions or your mood.
  7. Hi Thomaswb Seeing as you are at Heck you may as well take advantage of the area and include a flight over the Gold Coast When you take off from Heck, head out to the coast and head coastal over water south at 1000 feet along the beach. You are in the Southport CTAF R so don’t forget your radio calls. (all on the VTC) The VFR route goes south at 1000 feet and north at 500 feet . ( on the VTC) It is an excellent scenic route as you fly along the coast you will be looking up into the high rises. Going south you need to watch for Gold Coast CTR so if you do a "U Turn" at Jupiter’s Casino, and descend to 500 feet for the trip north, The Casino very visible and on the VTC As you get past the Gold Coast and near the seaway you can climb to a comfortable height and proceed along the eastern side of South Stradbroke island. At this point you may want to climb to about 2000 feet as you cross the Jumpinpin Bar and then follow the eastern side of the island . At this stage you have the option to drop into Dunwich for a look, or carry on up the coast across the South Passage Bar and up the East Coast of Moreton. The traffic In this area is, East Coast of the island northbound and West coast of the island Southbound. Most GA traffic in this area will be on the Brisbane CTR area freq (125.7) For a bit more scenery you can go right around the northern tip of the island for a view of the Cape Moreton lighthouse, and then just follow the coast back to Combayuro Point which is easy to see on the VTC and makes the shortest distance over water to Bribie Island. If you cross at 3500 you should be within gliding distance of land either way. At Bribie you can descend and fly up the coast to Caloundra The Southport Freq is on the VTC (119.0) Most GA traffic up the island to Cape Moreton will be on the area freq (125.7) Caloundra area freq is 118.8 switch to that and give an area advisory call as you leave Moreton to Cross the water to Bribie. Its all on the VTC and is a very scenic flight. Cheers Peter
  8. It was'nt the yanks It was the Poms during WW2 A slip is an aerodynamic state where an aircraft is moving sideways as well as forward relative to the oncoming airflow. Two forms are employed, the forward-slip and the sideslip. Aerodynamically these are identical once established, but are entered in different manners and will create different ground tracks and headings relative to those prior to entry
  9. Ring RAA and ask their opinion. 02 6280 4700 We tried the same thing at an airshow a couple of years ago and were told no, it then becomes a commercial operation and not available to RAA registered aircraft. This would then lead to insurance problems if there was an incident. Peter
  10. Have a talk to Jabiru first One would think that they have come up against this problem before I know they have extension blocks for the pedals for the more vertically challanged pilot
  11. We sat back one rainy day when we were doing a service and used a bit of braising rod that reached to the bottom of the sump . glued a cool knob to the top so it sticks out like the proverbial and doesent get lost, then put marks on it as we added oil ,one litre at a time ,with a bundy break to let it settle. It is accurate and we also try to make sure if leaving from the hanger to check it with the aircraft in the same spot each time.
  12. Just a thought Put a full load in your Jab : Full Fuel and pilot & passenger, then wheel it along a few feet and have a look then. You will more than likely find that the problem is not there once there is a bit of weight on the suspension Peter
  13. Comment periods extended for sport & rec NPRMs (Parts 103/105/149) CASA is pleased to advise the aviation community that the consultation periods for CASR Parts 103 and 105 (in NPRMs 0603OS and 0605OS) have been further extended. This will align them with the expected closure date for the Part 149 NPRM 'Recreational aviation administration organisations' which is due to be published soon. Aligning the consultation period closure dates will allow the complete sport/recreational aviation regulatory package (Parts 103/105/149) to be reviewed in total and in context. The new common closing date for all three sport/recreational aviation NPRMs will now be 2 July 2007. For a list of consultation documents currently inviting public comment, please visit http://rrp.casa.gov.au/respond
  14. just a thought but it may be worth considereing combining with one of the existing upcoming flyins and make it big I am sure the organizers of some of these other eventswould welcome the additional exposure It probably does not matter if the event is GA oriented as we may pick up some new converts.

  16. A simple test for ethanol is described in the flight safety magazine Link below http://www.casa.gov.au/fsa/2006/feb/46-47.pdf
  17. We have no spats on the J200 The airfield we operate out of gets a bit sticky when it rains and it is easier to leave them off than battle with them when they clog up with mud. There is no measurable difference in speed without them. There are claims of between one and three knots difference but we have been unable to note a measurable difference . We even put them back on one day to try some tests over the same conditions and no real difference. I guess its pretty hard to pick up a knot or two difference on your instruments. They (all three) have been off now for over a year and they are tied to the wall in the hanger and will only go back on when we sell the aircraft.
  18. Avgas for the Jab. Shell is the airfield supplier. We also have a mobil card for the aircraft And in my vehicles any brand that I have tested to contain no ethanol and then generally fuel up at the same place
  19. we have been through this before and you dont need a spell checker

  22. "His aircraft is newly sponsored by Vero Insurance so it should look good dressed in their colours. (I wonder if they are branching into aviation)" We have had the Jab insured with Vero for a number of years They have been the best price each year. The stand looks great Ian
  23. Check with Ian I believe he is getting them in the shop soon
  24. Brent Have you got a new prop fitted yet Two or three blade I notice your discussion seems to focus on a three blade if so why a three instead of a two? As another aside we recently fitted the "wavy "discs and although its still the single calipers and pads as supplied by Jabiru they seem to be getting more hours and need adjusting less.
  25. Please don't be discouraged by the lack of comments or feedback A lot of forum members will see no need to add a comment as their thoughts have already been penned in the existing comments. Also do not take too much notice of the number of views of your post as I would think that that a good majority of the forum members will have read the thread in the email notifications and have no need to actually log on to the thread to read it. Keep up the momentum. What you are doing is very good for our movement. Peter
