  1. That's pretty enviable Alf,I guess it takes a lot of drive just the same to get that sort of time in the air. I think I may have mentioned to you before that I did my training in porepunkah so I always knew you guys get some beautiful weather in Victoria and triking seems popular. Would be interested to know how some of the other states fair also? There was a guy flying down Hobart for a while Mark and I think he was getting a few hours up but has now sold the trike,so not sure if anyone else down that way? A conservative estimate would be 6-8 trikes across the north of the state but how many are being used I couldnt say? Happy to meet up always. Gary
  2. Living on the northwest coast of Tasmania working a five day week with the odd R.D.O thrown in last year I managed to get around 18 hrs flying time in my trike.Previous years I have flown 30-40hrs but this year hasn't offered many opportunities.I am still as keen as ever although you wouldn't think it.We do cop a lot more fronts coming through than the mainland, strong seabreezes in summer that persist late into the day.Having mountainous terrain not far behind the coast gives us the katabatic winds(southerly) that we are being plagued with at the moment.I think the rats are getting more use out of my trike at the moment!I would be interested to hear from some of you fellow trikers where you are flying from and what hours you are able to fly annually?
  3. There are still a few trikes around tassy, maybee we should start a new thread and discuss it out of respect for simon the guy that started this thread as he was sadly killed in a training accident at bridport last year.
  4. Hello Underneath the wheel trolley is a nylon block just slightly narrower then the angle frame, it is attatched to the wheel trolley in the centre via a cuple of spacer come tapping blocks it all works very smoothly havent got a detailed picture from under at moment but if you dont understand my description ill take one and post.the trailer came with my trike but i modified it extensively and tidied up in general.I put a lot of thought into making it a one man operation, havent completely finished wing rack yet,the front upright swivels 360deg and can be lowerd i just need to set up some gas struts on it and fine tune :stirring pot: gary
  5. Hello Have a look at these picts.I made a cradle and roller setup(using boat rollers) reasonably in expensive and quiet simple to build and a ten year old could put the trike on the trailer:clap: Just lift the front up strap it in the cradle and winch it on! 6. Has anyone got any idea how many trikes are flying in australia between RA and the HGFA and what do think the pro's and con's of having a single association for which all trikes would be registerd? gary
  7. Gday paul I was aware that these products can have downsides as you mentioned and there may be some that actually work, the product I used i have heard discussed and know that some people have tried on their wings and the point i was trying to make i guess that is if you havent seen real evidence that it does provide uv protectant apart from the fact you are creating these other issues(diffuculty of repair, mildew etc) you quiet possibly arent getting any uv protection at all? regards gary
  8. Over the last few years i have built a few windsocks from ripstop nylon for the private strip i fly out of hear in tassy, they only last a 4-5 months before the uv here deystoys them even after a few weeks the once brite socks that were visable for miles away become faded. After reading some of the discussions on uv protectant available i thought i would put sum to the test for my socks. So i shelled out $40 for one of the popular brands and sooned recieved it via mail.I conducted a experiment by nailing a few samples of flouro ripstop to my fence in direct sunlight coating 2 of the samples and leaving the other 2 uncoated following directions strictly. The samples have been there for around 8weeks now and i have taken photos at around 4 week intervals and in my experiment i have found that there was absolutely no visable differences in the rate at which the samples faded treated or untreated? So unless someone can demonstate otherwise i wont be using on my wing? 9. Gday alf we are always looking for sumone else to fly with around here so that would be great!I brought my trike back from vic on trailer via the spirit wasnt practiced enuf to fly the strait:rotary:maybee later? Catch up would be good, keep in touch. gary
  10. Gday I think there is a lot to be said for buying local after completing major work on my trike in accordance with statuory requirements i am impressed that i can ring the dealer before i go to work in the morning and have anything i require the next day and thats from tassy(sorry alf your not in the southern state I am:thumb_up:) so it must be at least that easy for anyone else? I have tested this many times, surely this has to have some bearing on how well your trike is maintained as it starts getting a few hours on? gary
  11. Ok thanks fellas Plenty of ideas there to try, hopefully get the chance to try sum at the weekend.:stirring pot: gary
  12. Thanks mc guyver I know acetone is readily available from the hardware store so i mite give that a try,as for MEK i hadnt heard of that until just now.i_dunno thanks agen gary.
  13. Hello Does any body know of a product for removing the brown waxy deposits from the inside of plastic trike fuel tank? I have the tank off and was considering steam cleaning if i cant find any thing more suitable? regards gary
  14. Hello ronny I damaged a blade beond repair on my brolga 4 blade prop and after looking around found that the guy from cumminns spinners took on all the old moulds ect and can make a replacement for you.i think you will find the initial weight of each blade is marked on the very inside edge of the blade probally somewhere around 700grams. regards gary

  16. There was actually 42 people that attended the rainbow coarses in maitland all members of hfga as far as i know?I was lucky enuff to attend and thought it was excellent!Wasnt just the knowledge and reference material provided by rainbow but the attitude towards maintaince.my experience in aviation maintaince is very small but as a diesel fitter I have seen people many times attempt maintaince tasks that they believed they were capable of without fully understanding the underlying risks with what they were doing! It seems sumtimes the less you know the simpler tasks appear?I think part of rainbows message was to stick with procedures in your manuals etc and dont second guess them and dont shortcut for any reason? ps does uncle Kel drive a silver landcruiser wagon slati? I think he may have been the guy that gave me a lift to the coarse? gary
  17. Hello allan I did try the manual focus mode and focused on the trike base,i also tried spot focus, area focus, multispot focus and moved the camera down in case it was trying to focus on the wing up close, its bin a little while now but from memory i tried all the focus modes and settings but the majority of shots was still blurry or not clearly focused. In the end was starting to think it was possibly because the shutter speed was to slow and when taking pictures in interval shooting mode you cant increase it? its my 3rd digital camera and as i sed the pentax i had i just bolted on and set to auto and it takes excellent shots each time just not high res for printing (3meg). The 2nd camera i purchased online and overlooked the fact it didnt have interval shooting (canon). One idea i did have but havent had the chance to try was zooming in on the trike a little to see if the camera found it easier to focus on it being as becuase of the wider lense it is further away?i_dunnomy photographic experience is limited but i did try to make it work but if anyone can see where im going wrong id be glad to hear:confused: regards gary
  18. I purchased a ricoh r7 about 6 months ago to use on my trike wing because like the r8 it had interval shooting and wide angle lense id been using an old pentax 3 meg that takes excellent shots for viewing in pc but i wanted a better quality for prints and on paper the r7 at the time looked perfect but have found that 95percent of the shots it takes are out of focus?thumb_downive tried different focus settings and anything else i could adjust[ no shutter high speed adjustment available] where as my old pentax never missed a shot the r7 seems to slow to focus so if you find the r8 is better or no where im going wrong let me no:help: regards gary
  19. Gday glen Yep i have an 03 model classic with a stone damaged brolga and am weighing up my optionsi_dunno. I spoke with the guys from bolly and they sed they supply 68 inch for the 582 classic but can supply 72 inch also as they do for one of the airborn models? Regards Gary
  20. Thanks andy Thats the kind of feedback i was hoping to hear:thumb_up: I did find out that the guy that makes cummins spinners has taken over the gear from brolga in the last few weeks and will be repairing/remaking them his name is allan barton:rotary:
  21. Hello fellow trikers:wave: Just wondering if any of you have had the oportunity to fly 582 trike with both brolga 4blade and bolly 3 blade prop if so did you have a preferance or was there any differences at all? regards gary.
  22. hey dennis i have a trike with quiet a few hours on it and have been recently wiping it over with crc on a bit of rag and it seems to be doin the trick for want of sumnthin better:thumb_up: is it very expensive to have them coated as i have a brand new 582 exhaust without coating? regards gary
