  1. Vimanas do not look to be anywhere near as popular as Savannahs. I wonder why?

Could be the other $40,000 is some deterant, extended baggage might be non-existant, long range tanks might be a problem.

  2. Aerokits flew the first Savannah S (a factory built) last week ready for delivery, apparently very smooth and much quieter. AND no creases in the fuselage sheets. S for smooth!!!

  3. Building something like a savannah the benefit of cnc precision kit is lost if the assembly, be it a wing or fuslage section is not fuuly assembled before riveting. 400-450 1/8" clecoes is more like what you need for a rear fuslage or wing and probrably 100 5/32". Plenty of 3/32" makes for nice straight solid riveted trailing edges. Once fully assembled everthing has to be straight and true and a good result is assured, there is just no substitue for enough clecoes wether hired or bought or borrowed.

  4. Firstly the building designer seemed to have a regular amount of masculinity, he may also have grown up on rounded airframes.

The lack of extended baggage kits may only be a matter of waiting until one is produced with round corners on the back wall. The square one would be fairly challenging to fit.

Remember that extended baggage areas and long range fuel tanks are probrably more popular in Australia than in Europe. We are only one part of their market.

  5. Is it worth more than a XL?

While assisting on the Outback Aircraft stand the RAAus northern fly-in at Monto on the weekend I had the opportunity to talk to a lot of people about many things Savannah related. Overwelmingly they agreed that they wouldn't pay more for an S model. The exception was one guy who was a building designer, who said he thought it was worth upto $5000 to him to look that much better.

  6. S For Smooth?

Looking at the few available photos, does anyone else but me see the breaks in the fuselage sheets have given way to a smooth finish. The garden shed image might be on the way out!

  7. Can't say that painting ICP black primer on mating pieces is great fun, BUT the bond it achieves is very believable if you ever unrivet a joint, it does a lot to control working in the joint. I am not sure that I believe two primed surfaces would control working to the same extent, putting much more reliance on the rivets to control movement in the joint, immediately beginning to wear the rivets.

  8. Mark,

The sizes you refer to are 5/32"(Black Body), 1/8"(Copper Body) and 3/32"(Silver Body).

From memory it takes about 400 copper ones to cleco every third hole on a complete wing at skinning stage, That still isn't enough to do the whole rear fuselage in every third hole, If that helps.

  11. Doesn't the ICP optional rudder pedal position on the XL require shorter steering rods forward to the front wheel? Then moves the the whole rudder pedal assembly forward about 2".

  12. Savannah XL First Australian Landing

I took this video yesterday down on my airstrip, first landing of the savannah XL on Australian soil. The approach was a bit tentitive because some of the fresh cow-pats were fairly obvious, it would have got christened eventually, that new paint is easy to wash anyway!

PS Uploaded video only works on my computer, Sorry, I will have to put it on Youtube instead. Try clicking view slideshow after it loads.
