  1. Andy No apology necessary. I find the useful thing about discussions like this is it gets us thinking about how simply things can go out of whack and what we might do if placed in such a situation. Forewarned is forearmed etc. I also fly the J230 when the opportunity presents. But up until now I hadn't thought of the relative power of rudder v aileron. (I have enough trouble keeping it straight on the runway. )
  2. Andy The ailerons were fine. The rudder locked hard left. High power settings exacerbated the yaw to the left so they had little option but to go down. He also had to keep speed up to maintain aileron effectiveness, so it ended with a flapless landing into a 20-25 kt head/cross wind. (Head wind when he rolled wings level/cross wind immediately after)
  3. I understand the stude suggested the paddock as he had been using it for PFLs a few days earlier. The swing to port as the wings came level for touchdown saw them almost landing sideways. Had the soil been softer there would have been a real chance of digging a wheel in and flipping. All in all, a top effort by the instructor to redeem the situation. There's a story going around that the fleet may be grounded until at least the end of the month while they conduct an in depth review of maintenance.
  4. Thanks dj I'll leave it for now. Let the experts have a look at it and decide what the problem was. But the symptom is the same. The course concerned is pretty much ready to move on to Pearce but for a couple more flights. I don't think they'll be impressed by the last minute delay. On the plus side, at least there was an instructor on board. Might have proved a bit tricky for a low hours solo stude.
  5. Nothing loose in the cockpit. Apparently there was some mad scrambling under the instrument panel during the initial descent, to try to release the pedals, followed by a more leisurely check once on the ground. I understand they grounded the fleet as a result; pending further checks. djpacro - can you provide any further details?
  6. http://www.northerndailyleader.com.au/story/2343824/photos-rookie-pilot-in-mid-air-drama/?cs=157 Rumour has it, the rudder locked hard left during aeros and the instructor effectively side slipped 3000ft into a convenient paddock.
  7. Can't agree with you f_t. I've been running a successful industry self-regulator for the past 15 years; albeit in a different industry. The scheme itself is in its 19th year and is recognised by governments at all levels. If you can establish and maintain straightforward policies and rules, harness industry expertise and apply good governance, it ain't rocket science. Government attempts to regulate smaller sectors have been an incompetent joke, at best.
  8. Three bodies found with the search continuing for the fourth and the wreckage. In the meantime, the ABC News website has relocated the search to the Gulf of Carpentaria Police searching for NT plane wreckage Updated 3 hours 29 minutes ago Darwin reporter Kristy O'Brien says police are still searching for a missing person and plane wreckage along the NT east coast.
  9. The Brumby 610 looks interesting. Ditto the Flight Design range. But cost becomes an issue. I've enjoyed the Jabiru 230D's but you can get a numb bum after a while. 600kms is about the longest trip I've managed.
  10. I think you'd be wasting your time trying to convert this NIMBY to the cause. Ditto the others who may gather to his banner. Publicly attacking him, no matter how ridiculous his claims, just gives him publicity. Above all, you have to avoid giving the broader community the impression of "big business" bullying the "local battler". The proponents of the air park need to be aware of his claims and have their responses to them ready - but focus their energies on convincing the ultimate decision makers. They can do this through personal contact and by putting out their own media information which addresses the issues but does not attack the objector.
  11. You preflight your aircraft prior to your license test, note a smell of avgas while sitting in the LH seat waiting for the examiner but only realise you hadn't checked that the fuel valve had closed after you did the check for water when the examiner gets a drenching while entering the cabin.
  12. Wonder if that's the same Lofty Mason who helped teach me to fly at Kyneton in the early 70's. To the RAAF he was(then) a nav but not a pilot, to the DCA he was a pilot but not a nav. Bureaucracy - ya gotta love it.
  13. Well I can claim to have been right. Despite earlier concerns about the process, we certainly did have some bloody good candidates. Congratulations gents and all the best in your new roles.
  14. Now that is a worry, Andy. Having stuffed around with the initial recruitment process, I'd like to think they can at least bring it home in a competent manner. As to what's on paper, my mate was not sent a copy of the job description and chased it up when he learned that the deadline for responses was the following day. He had 18 hours in a busy schedule to address a 5 page Selection Criteria. He's actually chuffed that he got to the top 6 in the circumstances.
  15. A bit hard to hide 24 years. I reckon he should have clarified that it included the first 20 years of a new start public service, which was all about outcomes rather than process. (Sadly it's caught up with the other public services now and is totally process and precedent driven.) I'm biased because I know the guy and he's got a good record in bringing stability, growth and bridge building; areas it looks like the association needs at the moment. Not saying he is necessarily the best candidate but very surprising the panel didn't want to talk to him. As DGL says, he's probably seen as too old.
  16. Things seem to be moving on the GM front. 45 applications, 6 resumes referred to the board and, of these, 4 to be interviewed. As my mate made the last 6 but not the final 4, it must be a strong field. Mid-50s, pilot member, 15 years CEO of an industry self regulator, 24 years public sector including executive and ministerial adviser, member and/or chair of several boards and an aviation tragic, including past Treasurer of the local aviation historical society - and willing to take a significant pay cut to help the association. Yup, the remaining 4 must be bloody good candidates if he didn't rate an interview.
  17. I like the idea of Moruya, but I'm a country boy at heart.
  18. Just checked with my mate. He's heard nothing since he spoke to them on the 17th. Hasn't received a copy of the Job Description.
  19. Interesting view. When I proposed to use a LSA in place of driving to the NT's regional centres as part of my work, the company's workers compensation and public liability insurers and my personal insurer all commented that I would be safer flying than driving. All three policies were endorsed for my flying up to 200 hrs/year without affecting the price of the policies and have had three renewals without problems. Of course, that might just be a reflection on the relative safety of NT roads.
  20. As it has been to the AFL, NRL and, most recently, Cricket Australia. Club and committee-based structures can only take you so far. Eventually you have to turn professional.
  21. My mate spoke to F2F this morning. The gist is that they have been swamped with applications, are still waiting for the job description to be signed off and they are also dealing with other clients with higher priority recruitments. (The person nominated on Seek as the point of contact is away until next week.) The current plan is to give all applicants a copy of the JD when it is available and allow them time to provide a detailed response to the criteria. He was assured that his expression of interest had been received and he would be sent the JD. Seems to be a case of "hurry up and wait".
  22. I'm not sure where I've said that it's the wrong view, Geoff. I don't have the history here of most contributors and I must admit to findng these threads compelling reading. However, as John Mc shows on the other thread, there is always the possibility for misconceptions to arise in internet forums and for discussions move off on a tangent. So, I am trying to sort the wheat from the chaff as we go along. Nevertheless, the committee hasn't covered itself in glory in its responses to the current issues. I probably won't be able to get to the EGM so I'm currently looking at my proxy options. Cheers
  23. Not to mention strong willed, intelligent stakeholders with divergent or opposing views.
  24. You're missing a category. The good candidate who wants to be part of the solution.
  25. The By Laws are your friend Note the error in By Law 1.5 - there is no position of Chief Executive "Director". ditto in clause 13 (ii) (a) and (b) of the Constitution, there is reference to an "Executive Director" being advised of the names of the newly elected members prior to the AGM. Again, there is no such position identified in the Constitution.
