  1. Kiawah Island off South Carolina coast. They said it's a barrier island. I stopped by on my way to Sun and Fun sand is very hard. There is a golf course nearby people waived.
  2. I've never landed on Florida beaches they are too crowded. But there is enough remoteness in USA Arctic. Nearly every landable beach has an owner... or three...
  3. This call was as close as it could be. Browns bank off coast near Plymouth Massachussets. I did my regular roll on the mains and it felt OK. Nothing suspicious... So I go third time to a full stop. Stopped in the middle and immediately initiated a turn around. The aircraft didn't move. More power I have a sinking feeling... full power and barely started moving the direction landed. Low fuel, full flaps and couple knots on the nose helped me to "unglue" the wheels. Had to accelerate in ground effect over the water. Later I talked to a boater who regularly anchors there and he told me that quick sand is never hard. They even had trouble walking on it.
  4. I didn't know that. I retract my DC vote. I might need a second affordable headset if anybody wants a ride while I am in Oz.
  5. If not taken by locals I would like to have them. I will pay postage to US.
  6. You can get a decent passive headset for 300. I would vote for a DC. With 40 hours a year flying a certified aircraft no need for expensive ANR.
  7. Hi Geoff, I am building an aerial dispensing canister prototype. Basically it's a 20"+ aluminum tube with electric activated covers on both ends. It comes relatively heavy even without useful load. Is it possible to imbed a metal mounting rings while nylon printing the tube?
  8. Alex I would say tuff it out and get to the point where you are signed off for the checkride. You've gone too far already. And if it's a small airport there might be little politics too. I remember about the same time I hit a learning plateau. It seemed to me I couldn't make any progress. Keep the pressure on, study hard and continue with the same guy. Especially if your wallet is bleeding...
  9. This particular beach is not far from a restricted airspace. It is on a tiny peninsula and hidden from the view by a sand berm. There is no boat access and surprisingly very few birds. There is no phone coverage so it may be considered as a remote. I pass over it once in couple months on my way from Florida and when I see low tide I buzz it. If I feel like I need a quick stop I land. There are pretty sharp shells on the packed surface. Hard enough to cut a tire. Takeoff presents no challenge unlike the next one.
  10. Many thanks for guidance and suggestions. It looks like there are suitable places on West Coast. Thank you for safety concerns it's definitely not your regular unpaved strip experience. One has to know what he is doing. I would like to share couple of my beach landings and what I learned from couple closed calls. The sand bar below appears long enough only when there is a strong wind with low tide. First I do a low pass to take a closer look and scare the crows from the beach. Next approach will be rolling the mains testing the hardness/softness. I usually land to full stop on third try. The OAT is couple degrees below freezing (it's February) I couldn't stay long here. Too windy and the tide will be coming back very soon. 15-20 minutes walking the sand snapping pictures looking for a souvenir and out.
  11. I have landed on various US oceanic beaches multiple times. I feel pretty confident with my experimental. I've been to Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic (only once) shores. So the only ocean missing from my beach collection is Indian. Do you guys have places to land on West Coast sand? Are there any restrictions?
  12. Simply put is there such a thing? I have read nearly all ASIC topics on this resourse and it seems to me that foreing flyers are not covered. I sent an email to CASA ASIC team but no answer so far. Would appreciate any info or reference. Thanks, Vlad
  13. Thank you kindly all for warm welcome! Bob, thinking of March-June a lot of people recommended the season. If I am able to scale down my flying considerably I may have enough pennies for 2018, if not there is always 2019... Looking at shipping options now you guys have strict quarantine rules there.
  14. My name is Vlad and I am a flying addict. I am an ethnic Russian living in the USA. Finished building my experimental aircraft in 2011 and put nearly 3,000 enjoyable hours on her since then. Was lurking here for some time I know there are some outstanding aviators here I see their call signs matching other aircraft specific web boards. There is nowhere left to go in North America and I am planning a Grand Australian Expedition. Doing my homework now. I plan to ship my RV9A to Australia, reassemble, criss cross or circumnavigate your beautiful continent for couple three months then ship her back. I researched the possibility to fly in but rejected it due to exorbitant fees for transiting certain countries while keeping my feet dry. Tons of questions will be coming your way ladies and gentlemen. The aircraft is Day VFR and the pilot is holding US PPASEL certificate. Thanks for having me here.
