  1. There is a Jab120 recently arrived at Mackay...apparently owned by a local...would be great if there were some Ra-Aus aircraft for hire here...I am looking at getting my license very soon and the only option will be to buy an aircraft in order to fly...having a Jab for hire would be a big help...I could buy a single seat machine for my own flying and hire a 2 seater for taking family or friends. I have been trying to phone a guy called Wayne who is advertising a single seat T83 Thruster in the latest Ra-Aus magazine but he is not answering...I know...I know...It is all backwards buying an aircraft before the license but the price looks good and according to TOSG it is in great shape. Could store it for a few months at home while I complete my training and sit in it making airplane noises meantime....much like I did when I got my motorcycle before I got my license a few years back.

  2. I have noticed that when accidents have been reported on recently they are referring to the aircraft as "light" rather than as "ultralight" more regularly...I recall when the name change to Ra-Aus was being talked about one of the reasons given was that there was bad press when "ultralight" accidents were reported...I guess this has worked.

It is a shame that there seems to be so many "light" aircraft accidents of late though...

  3. Sort of

You lucky aerodynamic little 041_helmet.gif.78baac70954ea905d688a02676ee110c.gif:devil:! - oh sorry, did I say something bad?! lol winsor68, seems like you had a great time growing up!

I was lucky growing up...BUT...It all stopped just before I turned 16 when the gliding club folded and the world seemed to enter some sort of economic rationalization stage??? There used to be a great aero club in Mount Isa and that died too...Spent many years trying to convince my dad that ultralights were not those dangerous contraptions...buying Pacific Ultralights from very early on and leaving them for him... and were the way to go and several times he has been on the cusp of buying a machine...he did his Ra-Aus conversion a few years ago on a Drifter and loved it...says the "Drifter is an honest little machine"...he always had the dream of sending his sons solo but with age and health it looks like it is not going to happen...so finally after many years away and dreaming I am going to start very soon and get licensed...he says he wants to be my first passenger and I can't wait...Even have his old GFA flying suit all ready to wear...even if I might look like a bit of a dick I don't care.

  4. You just have to look at the history of Gliding in Australia to see where this is going...Gliding used to be a sport any one could enjoy on a modest budget...the modern expensive machines with high maintenance costs put an end to that...even if you could do a lot of your own maintenance still the skills required for the average Joe were lost and became too specialized...

  5. And still helping

and Tony...you will the first person to register here at Recreational Flying those years ago - seems like just yesterday but I would hate to guess how many recreational pilots have been helped by you and everyone else here at this site

And still is helping...Tony always has a the answer to my questions about Thrusters...091_help.gif.c9d9d46309e7eda87084010b3a256229.gif

My parents met on an airfield, I was conceived at an airfield, grew up on an airfield, learned to drive on an airfield, learned to fly model airplanes on an airfield (control line on the keys at Cloncurry cross strip before this sort of thing was an issue)...and don't remember a time when I did not love flying or had not flown. My five year old daughter just flew to Brisbane unaccompanied to spent easter with my parents, and when I said to my mum I hope she will be all right she said "Darling...you flew from Mount Isa to Brisbane with your Uncle Doug when you were her age in a Cessna 206...Don't worry..."

Spent years away from flying but finally...now work at an airport and spend my day around aircraft and soon will get licensed...am back in heaven...

You will see me as a baby/toddler in some of my dad's old flying movies here...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgFPovdXi84&feature=channel_page"

  6. Well if you are going all that way I'd go to Airlie Beach instead of Mackay (or Hamilton Island) much nicer than Mackay. I can give you contact details for one of the controler as Hamilton island who would be more than happy to help you out.

Nothing against Mackay but I am with Adam on this one...Mackay is a great place to live but there is nothing much here for the tourist...all the action happens just a bit further north at Airlie and the Whitsunday Islands...

Of course you should drop in...it is on the way.

  7. A gaggle of about 8 trikes went through Mackay a few months ago...I believe 2 of the pilots were from England, the rest had joined them for an around Australia flight. They had come from somewhere in WA and had been all the way around the top of Australia and were heading south.

They were hoping to do some TIF flights with all donations going to the RFDS but the weather was a bit choppy...

Was quite a sight seeing them take off at 7 am the next morning one after the other.
