  1. So here's a question...

     

    Log books - What do you use?  Electronic, or paper based?

     

    If Electronic, which ones, and both for Pilot and Aircraft!  Maybe you use a spreadsheet, or maybe you designed your own sheet!  

     

    I currently use a sheet that I have designed, and it's in a binder (for my aircraft logs) my pilot log is currently in a tradition log book.  In this day though, it makes sense to go electronic, but not sure which is good or not.

  2. Why would losing control of the rudder cause the aircraft to suddenly dive? Ailerons and elevator should have been able to counteract that with appropriate use of power.

     

    I was asking the same question when the report said loss of rudder.  The only thing is maybe it was stuck full right or something.  Given my little experience with that machine, I still would have thought it would be cable.  So if it was a broken cable, then it should return to neutral.  So unless it got stuck, and they could not correct it, it has me scratching my head.

     

     

  3. A 1978 Cessna 182Q, VH -WNR. As far as I know there was no severe weather at the time. The call was calm & collected but it would appear only seconds from disaster. The debris was spread over a wide area according to reports indicating a high speed impact. A mechanical failure of some type perhaps.

     

    Water will take debris everywhere.  Even at a slow glide it would be above 70kts or so... so anything is going to be high speed I guess.  ?  Sad again - just too many.

  4. I can't see why you would expect him to cover damage to your plane unless the Hangar caused it like a short circuit in the electrics or such..  Aviation is a bit of a magic mystery so all things that can be gouged will be.. Nev

     

    No no!  I never expected his insurance to cover my bird - That's what I pay for.  He was purely advising that if I left any possessions in the hangar and it was broken into, it's on me.  To which I agreed!!

    A very poor effort, and typical of a lot of these "crap, money-making" websites that proliferate, designed specifically to generate sizeable income for the website owner, via clickbait.

     

    LOL!  I love how people go off half baked.  FYI - He makes no money from any of it!  LOL!  He does it as a hobby, in his spare time, so the rest of us can enjoy some history in the very thing we love to do.  We are all so quick to judge!!

     

    Maybe reach out and talk to the guy - you might make a new friend!

     

     

  6. Jaba-who, do you have the option of NOT insuring ? Some risks are so unlikely that I reckon you should carry the risk yourself.

     

    For example, why insure against being abducted by aliens?

     

    There are 2 categories where is makes little sense to insure: Firstly, where you can afford to carry the risk yourself, and secondly, where the event is so unlikely that it has never happened except in the imaginings of insecure people.

     

    You raise a good point.  I had discussions with my hangar owner who advised that there is no contents insurance on the hangar, so if I choose to leave tools etc, and it gets broken into, then it's on me.  Of course my plane is covered by its own insurance, so it does not make sense for him to cover contents etc.  That would save some coin I guess.

I can agree with some here, as I was, at one point, going to purchase a block at Temora and put up a Hangar.  When I got the quote back from the shed guys, I nearly fainted.  They wanted more than $120,000 for the Hangar alone.  SO... I called another shed mob and asked for a quote on the EXACT same size "shed" for my "property"  It was half the price - for the same thing.

     

    I think it's like weddings.  As you as you mention the word Wedding, the flowers double in price!  LOL!

     

    I now rent hangar space in a very nice hangar in southern NSW.  Great AD, and the hangar I am in is large and very comfortable.  Shower, toilet, and even an office space if I want to use it.  For what I pay for it, I think it's pretty good value to keep my bird out of the elements, and somewhere to work on her when I need to.  I share it with another aircraft, but it's large enough to house both of us, without having to move aircraft to get out - the other is a Bonanza! 

     

    Would I buy one as an investment - Maybe - If I was to put my own bird in it, and maybe lease some space out to someone else.  You can always sell in the future, and you have to put a value on it being yours to do with as you wish.

  8. Great post Drew.  Plenty of lessons learnt.

     

    I am still surprised sometimes in discussions when I hear someone utter the words... "I have been flying for more than 20 years..., and mostly it's to brag how they have been doing this way or that, and never had a problem.

     

    I am one of those guys who checks everything, and runs every check list.  Like you said, you will always come back down - I just try to make sure it's under my control!

  9. Suffer the little aviators to come unto me and I will scalpe them of all their earthly goods, so as to make a modification, which will not impact on aircraft safety but will have many benefits. The cost of this blessing will be at least 100 times the cost of  the material good thus supplied for the modification aspired too.

     

    Some manufactures are quite open to minor mods and will, on request, provide a letter of authorisation at no cost.

     

    (Be aware that the "modification" suggested need not involve any structural changes/impacts/permanent evidence of installation & may be easily removed at any time so as not to disturb the thought police)

     

    AHAHAH!  Oh yeah - I feel your pain!  I added an RPM to my dash, right in front of me, as the stock gauge is right over on the right hand side, and with an inflight adjustable prop, it was pain, as RPM is one I must have my eyes across. 

     

    Long story short, a lot of money to the manufacturer for the part, then more for the letter of authority... blah blah... and so it was, that my bank account took the hit!  LOL!

     

    Imagine what I would face to want to install non standard aileron trim!  AHAHAHAH!  I shudder at the thought!

     

     

  10. Except if the fuel-return line sends fuel to a different tank to the one that was being used. With non-fuel injected Foxbats, you are supposed to only use one tank at a time because you can end up losing fuel as it is pumped to a tank that is already full. 

     

    Yep!  My Sporty is like that!  It bleeds back into the left tank only.  So my manual states (if full) to use the left tank first.  Of course, all of that goes out the window in emergency situations of bad fuel etc etc. But under Ops Normal, fuel management is part of the check lists and pilot safety procedures.  Even running off each tank on the ground to ensure fuel flow is appropriate from both tanks.

     

    If I follow my check lists (Which I do) then I should never take off on an empty tank.  The check list will prevent that!  But of course, if the pilot does not follow it.... well... Yup!!!

     

     

  11. True to a point - trim may also be acheived by using adjustable spring loading on the control cables/rods, horizontal stabilizer adjustments or in the case of Mooney (only ever seen pictures) an adjustable empennage.

     

    Bit unfortunate having to guess at the amount of deflection on your trim tab to compensate for buddy mass - why can't you fit an inflight/cockpit aileron trim system - it's easy just a bit of bungee cord attached with cable ties to your left up/wing down aileron system, a plastic (light weight) sailing type double cam cleat (may also need a block/pulley to change cord direction - just pull on the bungee until te required amount of trim has been achieved and lock in position using the cleat.

     

    I have electric ELE trim, but manual AIL.  I can't change it.  Well I can, but because I am LSA, I need to get the pope to do it for me.  ?
