  1. Yes, nice a/c winsor. The Varieze can be lic as an ultralight as easy as signing a few forms
  2. I've done 30knot plus cross wind landings in a Varieze with the recommended reduced rudder travel and plenty of rudder control. However, the wing lightly scraped the ground on one of them. Good luck with the project Scotty. I've flown both and the Long Eze is the most popular. The Varieze is very weight limited depending on it's empty weight when built. Mine could take full fuel. one average weight pilot and a a small kid for passenger with no starter motor. The Long Eze addressed that with a bigger plane and engine. To add, they are the easiest a/c I have ever flown, especially on landing. Because of the long strips in the USA they land them at 100 mph [statute] for better visibility. Another aircraft I am investigating is the humble Hummel Bird and it does around 100 kts on a half Volkswagen engine [converted]. Has no struts and as well quite low drag.

    I prefer fixed wing aircraft. Seen parachutes collapse in turbulance. Do you wear another parachute in case that one fails?

  13. Hi Herm, checked out Aircraft Spruce and couldn't find any there. The one listed by tornado is made for a bing 64 carby. Maybe you have to make your own for other makes. Let me kow if you find anything useful.

  15. I have a big interest in electric carby heaters as lots of engines don't have any carby heat at all. If you fly without one you're playing russian roulette. I taked to a CFI at Bindoon who seemed to know about the subject. He was talking about wrapping some heating coil wire [i guess like you find in an electric blanket] and assured me it worked even if the carby was in the slipstream. As for me-no carby heat, no fly.

  19. The last time I refuelled my a/c I sighted the level and checked for water contamination which was removed.. We assume that what is left in the tanks is all suitable fuel, but it may not be. Other contamination and fuel quality arn't always discovered in normal pre-flight checks. I talked to another pilot about that. He mentioned that during refuelling a large bee or fly entered his fuel tank and never came back out. Some time later he had fuel flow problems. Fuel lines are only about a quarter inch in dia. and an inline filter would be even smaller. One of those over fed flies can turn your engine off as fast as a selector turned to off. I avoid this by never leaving my cap off unattended ie refuelling from petrol containers. Everybody knows that old fuel is no good, especially if mixed with two stroke oil. Part of the preflight for me is to remove old fuel and put in my car to mix with good fuel there. Two stroke oil put into fuel lowers it's octane rating so buy high octane fuel and use within a month. Also old fuel eventually turns to a varnish and coats the inside of your fuel system. Other contamination exists. I once filtered the fuel I drained from an a/c and found lots of small black flakes, something that could even block a fuel filter. Who knows what the previous owner stuffed into his tank.

    Some engine blow a lot initially out the breather when full-don't fill.
