New ICOM IC-A210 Released

Have just been browsing.

Seems the new IC-A210 has been recently released.

Over the 200 model, it now has a voice activated intercom, led display, ability to listen to the standby frequency and 8 watts of transmit power. Apparently it connects to a GPS and nearby frequencies are delivered to the radio - should prove interesting.

Looks like the price 'may' be around AUS$1,600, plus freight, duties and stuff.

A bit more pricet than the Microair, however the Microair doesn't suit everyone.

Hello

Do you know if the A210 has 8,33 kHz channel spacing as well like the IC-A110? 8,33 will be mandatory in Europe from 2010/2013.

The various advertisers writes: "powerful 8 watt transmitter that is 8.3 kHZ compatible". No information on ICOMAMERICA.

Replacement for ICA4

Sorry about the mis info, also the ICA 4 is being replaced (real shame) in January (at least in RSA) with the ICA14, waterproof and playing catch up to the wonderful Vertex Standard VXA220. I get the ICA 210 this week and will post a full review as I will also post it in RSA.

I've got a Vertex VXA220. Nice radio! Submersible, solid, loud speaker and looks good. Could do with std aerial fitting, although an adapter is available for it. The price of these at the moment from the US is literally quite amazing. I've also got a VXA710. It has VOR and FM radio reception. Slightly smaller than the 220, but probably not worth the extra US$120.

Yaesu VX7r

You may be interested but I have been playing with the Yaesu VX7r, it can be modified to transmit from 40mhz up too 222mhz and from 300mhz up to 480mhz including air band. This means you can use it in a aerie to cover the Australian/NZ Cb frequencies UHF as well as the 2 metre bandVHF and also Aviation in AM. After modification it becomes a Vertex Standard !! Now I am working on opening up the VXA710 to transmit on the BMR bands...710 is brilliant radio, awesome performance but just one point no side tone adjustment so doesnt always work with some intercoms..Probably illegal though..

ICA210

Just for interest..Subject not GA related but I have seen two units from the Icom importer, the device is the same shape, plugs etc as the ICA 200, not the same cabling exactly. It has a awesome screen and can be seen in really bright light with a rather nice ( half syllable) VOX intercom, still no music in though. I recorded a 10 watt output on our calibrated meters. Shame we are not using the best features..

We are using them as retro fits in Alouettes and Pumas for a Central African Air force. Six way intercom (with our wireless helmets interface for ropeman) and a 25 watt PA system !! Electioneering by chopper !!

Our military intercoms accept three radios irrespective of brand and couplings. Each intercom box weighs a kilogram and a tad heavy for GA !! Helmets are similar and very hot.

Cheers Paul

Paul, sorry but you are pushing the limit again with subtleness in selling products here in the forums - please do not do it again! last warning - you were given the opportunity to sell your products here through the shop where proceeds would go towards helping to improve these forums but you elected not to by not sending a catalogue so don't try and get free advertising by exploiting these Australian forums for your South African company.

- note to all forum members, as you know we do not like anyone trying to sell products here. Using these free forums when all the hard work is done by others to bring you these forums for absolutely no cost and to see someone come in here to use them to make money is absolutely frowned upon - we could make money ourselves by selling advertising but we don't to keep these forums free from any bias or commercialism. If you hear of anyone trying to exploit these forums for their own benefit please let me know.

Dont sell to the GA market

Ian, I don't sell to the GA market at all, and I am sitting on a million Rands (Au $200,000) worth of orders for these toys. Why would I do that ??

I posted merely for the forums interests sake and I am writing a full report of the product for our country, with zero stock availability for the next six months in any event !. I work very close with the Icom importers on other projects (not GA) which would also possibly interest the forum and is communication related for Aviation. I have never posted because of potential (hidden) advertising or mis reading as same. I will not bother in future.

I looked at the A210 recently, but decided I would go for the A200. I bought from Airborne Avionics at Narromine for $1100 and the A210 was quoted at $1200.

It only arrived today and all I have done is open the package and look for a 3/32 allen key so far.

I tried to get a quote off the local Icom agent, Jones communications, but as per usual for a Gladstone business they wouldn't even answer my email, so I went interstate to the people I have dealt with before. No I am not in any way aligned with the Narromine people.

Now I have to find where I can install the radio and do all the wiring. It may end up as a major panel reshuffle.

I bought an A210 at Oshkosh and bought it back with me. I also scored an A14 hand held radio as part of the deal. The price for the 210 was supposed to cover a 150 dollar rebate, but when the rep found it was only applicable to US residents, he chucked the hand held in so I didn't miss out. What a legend! Haven't done anything with it (the 210) yet except open the box to see if everything was there.

ICOM A210

Some weeks ago my Xcom suddenly stoped working. Then, I decided that I need a second pannel radio onboard. One of the features that I consider very important is the possibility of dualwatch so, the A210 and the SL40 were my choices.

Then I found a review of the A210 (it is more a personal view about avionics) ( http://www3.telus.net/public/wsm/Avionics.htm)

At some point the man sais: "There is a serious shortcoming in the A210 ... the dualwatch feature was implemented in such a way that if there is activity on the standby frequency then it does not check / monitor the active frequency. The worst case scenario for this would be if one were to dial ATIS on the standby frequency in flight, there would be no monitoring of the primary frequency. It is my understanding that there may be a firmware modification for this but I'd advise checking this out before using this function or purchasing this radio."

Does anyone knows if the mentioned modification is already implemented?

Nice landings

I recently intalled a new A210 in my airplane. It has the new firmware upgrade that fixes this problem. It is version 1.23.001. You can check your firmware by holding the Frequency Exchange button while turning on the unit. If the new DW feature is activated you will see an additional menu item called Priority Watch just below the DW Interval item. To activate this feature in your A210 you need set your Mem Clear item to ALL and press and hold the Mem button for 2 seconds. This reinitializes the CPU and activates the Priority Watch feature in the Menu Selection.

If you don't have the correct firmware, you can send your A210 to the nearest Icom service centre and they will update it for you for free.

I like the radio so far, VOX works well, and they tell me my transmission is very clear and understandable.
