Teggles Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Looking good. We have had the same drone issues here in the UK - looking at military bases mainly 😱
Don J Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 (edited) "Finished" that sure would-be music to my ears when I can say it with my own mouth. It seems the closer to flight you get the farther away you really are.🤔 Cost of supplies has become a challenge in this neck of the woods along with shipping. Regardless of all the setbacks with a build having fun and enjoying the product is a thing a builder should keep foremost in their mind. 👌Along with safety...................... Teggles Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 Hi Don, Its too cold in my workshop to glue at this time of year so I am getting on with the metalwork. I have got the wing fittings water jet cut. Much better than laser as the laser heat treats the metal as it cuts. Undercarriage and associated fittings are progressing. Engine? After much angst I am going for a VW 1776cc with a 110 or scat 25 cam. Single port heads with 1:1:1 rockers. This should give enough power but the torque will be lower in the rev range. The case has been vapour blasted, now to get a line bore. 1
facthunter Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 You want to make sure that is done very accurately. Are you decking the block or using oversize OD bearings? Nev
Teggles Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 It’s with a specialist VW company. I’m not that good! 2
Don J Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 Teggles. I was a bit more curious about how the cable routing is going along with seat type and placement. Are you going steam gauges or do you have more updated goodies for the dash?
Teggles Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 (edited) The rudder cables were - as you said straight forward. Elevator I am still working on, but I had a breakthrough when a friend sent me some pictures of the inside of his machine. Some angled pulleys has made for a neat system, so I will try to replicate that. He also had an issue with the aileron cables. As he moved the stick fore and aft the ailerons moved as the cable was tensioned. Both ailerons going up or down together. He has solved that by routing the cable from the bottom of the stick through the torque tube (picture attached). I am going for steam gauges, simple, reliable. Edited December 20, 2024 by Teggles 1 1
Don J Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 (edited) Very interesting cable arrangement. Aileron cables arranged in torque tube look to be a problem solver. I would only study the over 90-degree return at pully of cable aft of rear spar ensuring no cable can touch under tension. Thumbs up Teggles Edited December 20, 2024 by Don J
Teggles Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Happy Christmas Don, every job is one less😃 1
Don J Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Merry Christmas to you my friend also and to all. build on and have fun with it. 1
Teggles Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Just collected my legs from a local engineering firm. They have done a great job. Axles and torque links next and I will have a pair of undercarriage legs 😁 4 1
Don J Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Thats great Teggles. Keep at it and it won't be long, and you will be doing taxi runs.
Teggles Posted March 22 Posted March 22 Productive couple of days in the workshop. Undercarriage stop rings, axles and torque link brackets all done. Soon it will be welding time. Just need to make the torque links. The brackets for the legs are with the welder now. After the torque links I need to assemble the centre spar and then I will have an aeroplane on its wheels 😁 7
facthunter Posted March 23 Posted March 23 I've got some good Motorcycle tele forks that would do that job wel, Damped and all. Are you using scissors Links? Nev
Teggles Posted April 6 Posted April 6 I may have sourced some links which have been CNC’d from an aluminium block, they look nice - but they haven’t come back to me with the cost 😬
Teggles Posted April 14 Posted April 14 Undercarriage mounting brackets. 14 deg +/- 30 mins! Just need to finish the centre spar. She will soon be on her legs. 5
Teggles Posted April 15 Posted April 15 Not by me! There is a company near me which makes replicas of historic cars, fantastic craftsmen and great welders. 2
Don J Posted June 11 Posted June 11 These crazy old Taylor monoplanes. Teggs I thought I read 17 degrees on main undercarriage mount? I'm chiseling away on mine. 1
Teggles Posted June 11 Posted June 11 14 deg 30 min on my drawings. I get the undercarriage back from the welders in the next few days, I will post some photos.
Teggles Posted June 21 Posted June 21 She has wheels! Maybe held on with clamps, some bolts are the wrong length and I know it’s the wrong stub wing rib but….. she has wheels! Not long now before I can sit in her and make silly aeroplane sounds! 7
RYoung Posted Monday at 09:24 AM Posted Monday at 09:24 AM Good evening gentlemen, I think that I make builder number 3 in the world of Taylor Monoplanes. Mine is currently about 50% complete with approximately 150% left to go. I can’t quite sit in yet unsupported but I’m close. I haven’t started assembling the wings yet, I’ve got a pile of ribs for the outer panels and the spars complete. I’m still to do the ribs for the centre section, but I’m holding those off until the outer panels are assembled so as to make sure that I get the rear spar in the right spot in the fuselage. I’m planning on Jabiru power, I do have a spare AeroVee however I am a little dubious of the crankcase casting. I want to save a little weight and most importantly avoid hand propping to start it. The nose will grow a couple of inches to fix the C of G issue with the lighter engine. Mine is constructed from hoop pine as spruce is almost impossible to obtain in Australia and the costs are eye watering. I’m a bit slow, and I’ve needed a couple of motivational kicks up the arse to keep it progressing. Here’s a couple of pictures of mine so far. Regards, Richard. Gawler, South Australia. 7
Teggles Posted Monday at 05:05 PM Posted Monday at 05:05 PM Looks great. Keep going and keep us updated.
facthunter Posted yesterday at 03:55 AM Posted yesterday at 03:55 AM There was one at Lethbridge VIC. Nev
