  1. Will you do a leak down before starting?

I don't think that would be too useful. I'll do one after the first run, but I wouldn't expect anything meaningful until 25 hours on run-in oil.

    I suppose I could do a pre-start leak-down just for info.

  2. Relfy, early on I had some cooling issues during summer on long climbs. Sometimes I had to level off for a while because the oil was getting to 100C.

It didn't stay set up that way for long. I built a scoop to create negative pressure and drag more air through the cooler. Now it rarely gets over 80C.

I have always used Avgas and run on 15W/50 Aeroshell (the first year or so I sometimes used Aeroshell 100+). The last few flights it was using more than 100ml an hour.

I concede that the early cooling problems may have caused the issue. All part of sorting out a new setup.

Hopefully, it will go long and hard now.

    The engine too.

  3. Thanks Nev - your usual sage and succinct advice. That's what I figured, but I feel better for hearing it from you.

The engine guy did give it a light hone on my instructions. It looks better than original. The valve seats were oval and the valves were not seated well. There was heaps of play in the stems inside their guides. That'll be where the oil went.

I'm putting it back together with the new hollow rods and rockers and sealing off the external oil feeds.

The compressions should be much better with new rings, guides and beautifully seated valves, even though I'm shimming the barrels to reduce compression a bit (after chatting with the engine guys at Jab).

The cleaning process even made the ports much bigger. Because of the badly leaking guides, there was a lot of build-up beyond them.

We'll see how it runs now. Hopefully I'll get more than 300 hours out of this lot.

    Thanks again.

  4. I took my heads, barrels and pistons to an engine rebuilder to fit K-Liner valve guides (the guides were well stuffed after only 300 hours - grumble, grumble).

In the process of cleaning everything up, whatever was lining the bores dissolved, and now there's only bare chrome-moly steel. The Jabiru manual says the pistons and rings run directly in the steel bore.

Is this correct, or do I need to re-line the bores somehow?

Doesn't seem likely, just thought I'd ask you experienced guys because the factory is closed today and I want to put it back together tomorrow.

    Cheers,

    Ross

  5. GPS arrived today from China and I managed to set everything up and it's all running well. Thanks for the info slarti! Would it be possible for you to post a new download link to your OziCE home screen? The link further back in the thread is dead now. Also can you navigate directly to a waypoint just by selecting options on the GPS unit? Or do you have to set the route up in OziPC first then import it?

    Hi Andrew.

Just emailed the screen in case you haven't got the right one.

I usually nav by waypoints in flight. Not very often these days do I plan the route and save it as a .rte file on the PC.

I have very little trouble popping up the waypoint list, selecting one and hitting goto - unless it's really really bumpy. Still no great drama though.

    Cheers,

    Ross

  6. In contrast, my Odyssey lasted only 4-5 months. Then their support people ignored me when I called about warranty, so I won't touch them again.

Funny how we can all get different experiences.

The death of the battery may have been related to the cheap solenoid Jabiru supply. I was jump-starting it regularly.

Wasn't happy about the support though.

  7. Unless you plan on taking your PC with you, neither PC program needs the GPS.

You can do everything without it.

Perhaps you are talking about accessing the file system on the GPS, and not the satellite finding where-the-hell-am-I hardware?

I find the easiest way is to take the SD card out and plug it into a card reader attached to your PC via USB. You just copy the files to where they need to go that way.

If you don't have a card reader, you can pick one up for $15 at the computer markets or eBay.

  8. Excellent. Thanks Jack.

I'm leaning toward new rings and a hone too. If the compression is improved by stopping guide leakage, the rings will be under more pressure anyway. It might hasten their wear.

  9. Jack, any update on your guides? Did you fit the K Liners? How are things now?

I'm faced with the same issue (at 300 hours too). I have excessive oil burn, and noticed pools of oil inside 1 and 3 (viewed through the plug holes).

It still starts first turn every time, and I haven't noticed smoke (it may be there - haven't had anyone handy to check). Definitely burning too much oil though.

Compressions are OK, so Don suggests valve guides are the most likely cause.

I'll pull the heads off this weekend and find out, but I'm thinking that a trip to the machine shop and some K Liners are the way to go.

    How's yours Brian?

    Anyone else have ideas?

    Cheers,

    Ross

  10. I've been using TrackMe for WinCE for a while. It works well.

See the thread here for a Google Earth link or 2 to show what it can do.

I found a reference to Luis Espinosa selling the product to a company who were then going to work on an iPhone version, but I can't find them.

However, I found this. It says the service is free. Why not try it out and report back here?

    Cheers,

    Ross

    PS - here's another one.

PPS - and another. Here's a vid of this one in action:

  11. Oops. We forgot to start a thread for December's competition.

Simon needs photos for the magazine by Wednesday, so could you all urgently rummage your recent (or not) photos and chuck them in here?

This could be your big chance to get published.

Remember, you could win a 6 month subscription to Aviator magazine.

    Also, they should be:

    • jpg format

    • at least 300 dpi (dots per inch) at a usable size (say 6" x 4" or around 16 x 10 cms)

    • and if to be considered as a cover pic - in vertical format

    • aircraft(s) identified in caption

    Rotsa Ruck Cookie.

  12. But, one thing is certain, MTOW of 544kg is quite inadequate to build a plane to carry two sizeable adults (170kg), 100 litres of fuel (70kg+), tools etc. (5kg), baggage (10kg). All that adds to 255 kg leaving only 289kg for the aircraft where close to 400 kg is really needed. So 400kg plus 255kg . . . 655 kg looks pretty minimal to me unless we go to exotics like Carbon Fibre.

I don't think it's inadequate. Put all that in mine (and I regularly do - including 100 litres), and I still have 20Kg left before reaching 544Kg. I know from accidental testing that mine is extremely strong, and it will drag all that weight along at 105 knots for 5 hours.

    All without exotic materials.

I would like to see a weight increase, I'm just showing you that it can be done under current limitations.

  13. Anonymizer

    Hi Russ.

I think you're talking about a proxy to hide your IP address, not your ISP.

There's a Wikipedia page here which explains it.

If you are in China complaining about human rights abuses, or a paedophile, or online criminal, you might find them useful to cover your tracks.

About the only use for them I find is when you want to view stuff on a website in another country and it says you can't because you're in Oz.

Read the article and search for "ip proxy" and make up your own mind.

    Cheers,

    Ross
