  1. After doing a full stop landing, my instructor said "Right - I'm getting out now - see you back at the terminal" Whaaaaaa...????? Well, suppose you gotta do it sometime, so I closed the hatch and did my first circuit SOLO!!!! And a bit of a bonus, it was one of my nicer landings. A BIG thanks to my instructor Jennifer from Suncoast Cooloola.
  2. just a quick question about the explanation for this "cold seizure" phenomenon.... (gee can you see my bias showing yet????) why didnt my trail bike ever experience such a thing when it hit water crossing creeks etc? what about jetskis, that travel thru different water temps all the time? Sounds EITHER like a breakdown in lubrication due to high temps, or the engine was run at full throttle from dead cold (which MAY cause a seizure due to tight hot pistons contacting relatively cold, small bores), which doesnt fit the case here If the piston/cylinder clearances are pretty tight to start with, and your lubrication is a bit suspect, then high revs & temps will expose any probs REAL quick. If using premix in the engines, how often do you (re)shake the mix, to make sure there was no settling? (yep, not supposed to come out of mix, but I always used to shake my premix before refueling my bike) And if using direct oil injection, maybe the injector wasnt delivering enough oil at high revs And to quote Tomo, But on take off, full power, and climbing (assuming) the airflow and power setting makes it hard to imagine any amount of cold causing a stoppage, on a water cooled engine
  3. and of course Listen to Live ATC (Air Traffic Control) Communications | LiveATC.net I often have that on in the background, and I think it has helped me deciper radio calls during my lessons.
  4. Hey Oz can you post (or pm) the casa ceo's comments please? ONly being new to this, havent seen a lot of stuff, including that.
  5. It sorta begs the question...... WHY?
  6.:confused::confused: Well, so far I am as confused or unenlightened about this topic as when I started reading it. I'm sorry, but so many of these "is it legal to do this???" topics are full of half guesses, "I sorta remember that when I was knee high to a grasshopper...", or " a mate once told me..." responses, that I, as a total newbie, and I sorta guess others more experienced, are no more CORRECTLY informed than previously. It seems to beg for a section where legal questions (height, weight, clearance allowances) are answered by an authorised respondent, who can quote relevant regulations (both CASA and RAA). I am NOT taking a shot at people who in all good faith make responses - I am lacking in the experience AND knowledge to make any valid response to the inital topic post. I dont even know what I dont know What I am crying out for is a DEFINITIVE answer, if possible, rather than supposition. Maybe we need a section that expands and is corrected over time, that contains authorised answers with the relevant regs quoted to provide the basis. Then, refer any idiot newies such as myself to that section. Regards Gerry
  7. Hey, Congratulations, winsor. Must be a great feeling. Hope to be there myself in a couple of months. Cheers Gerry
  8. Pardon my stupid question Pud, but is that a cigarette lighter outlet on the top right? Is it used for powering devices in flight, or for charging the battery (or maybe both)? Or something different altogether? Do you just hard-wire it into the battery? Gerry
  9. Careful what you drink, as well !!!! Dihydrogen monoxide (DHMO) is colourless, odourless, tasteless, and sickens over 1 billion and kills over 2 million people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death. Dihydrogen monoxide: contaminates fuel is also known as hydroxyl acid, and is the major component of acid rain. contributes to the "greenhouse effect." may cause severe burns. contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape. accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals. may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes. has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients. contamination has been found in all floodwaters where death has occurred and violent thunderstorm rains containing destructive lightning. changing from crystalline to liquid is a leading cause of the destruction of arctic ice and glaciers. Coalition to Ban DHMO Dihydrogen Monoxide Homepage And remember folks - always check for DHMO after refuelling!!!
  10. Hi Tony. Any further update on the Vision / Thruster in Australia? Also, any further plans on the kit version? Cheers Gerry
  11. Perhaps it is, to paraphrase the words of the great Douglas Adams:: "Throwing yourself at the ground and missing"
  12. Hey Stewy. Have you been spying on me??? - your circuits sound EXACTLY like the ones I just completed this morning!!!! Just finished the second hour of circuits and boy - talk about brain fade - remember flaps - throttle - trim - altitude - radio calls - Ts & Ps - switches - ALTITUDE!!! -- SPEED!!! --- centre line line up And that's not to mention trying to get down in one piece.... And great to hear others have "fun" with steering on the ground But as they say, the most fun you can have on your own!! Gerry
  13. Hi Robert, let me know when you arrive - I'll see if I can organise a shandy or three. Cheers Gerry
  14. Thanks for the greet, Major. It might be a little while before I can take up that invite , but maybe when i do my cross country cert, I'll drop in for a cuppa Cheers gerry
  15. I'm only a very junior RAA student pilot, but one thing that strikes me about this article is that it smacks of the VERY common attitude prevalent in all occupations when a once exclusive technology becomes more accessible to the great unwashed. I saw it first hand in the IT industry, when the high priests who in white lab coats tended their room sized machines came across PCs. You see it with doctors saying there will be disasters when nurses learn more and become "nurse practitioners" instead of just doctors handmaidens. You see it now when some GA pilots feel that their profession, which was once exclusive and only available to the anointed ones, has now become accessible to anyone with a car licence, for heavens sake. They appear to feel threatened, and lashing out seems to be the common human response. Having said that (and got that off my chest), I am still left wondering about the motive(s) behind the writing AND publication of said article. Is it just to stir the pot, a pre-emptive strike due to the release of the avation white paper, sour grapes, or something else? Cheers
  16. Ahhhh sorry guys, no flying references here - just one of the Marx Bros movie that I love - been using this tag for more than a few years. Horse Feathers (1932) - Plot Summary
  17. Hi all. Just started flying after dreaming about it since I was knee high to the proverbial. Have 4 hours now, on a Sportstar out of Gympie , where we moved 18 months ago after finding Brissie too busy.... Trying to get 2 flights a week in, and boy, talk about fun!!! Better than I expected. Took my daughter (who is on her way to a Commercial Licence - jealous? - who, me???) to the Wide Bay airshow at Bundaberg last year, and found out about recreational certificates (thought it was all PPL up till then) and finally managed to convince the treasurer that this was a good thing for me to do. Hope one day to buy a plane (probably a share in one) but let's get that certificate first. Cheers Gerry
