  1. Winsor68 - did you try soaking it in a solution of Viagra? I hear that helps with lack of desire..........
  2. Congratulations, johndl--- its the BEST feeling when you pull up at the terminal after that first landing, aint it? Cheers
  3. Found this out this arvo - BigW is selling an Optus branded 7" android tablet (the ZTE) for $279 From the web site: The Optus My Tab will run Android 2.1, though it will get a 2.2 upgrade shortly after launch. Its 7 inch screen is resistive touch with a 800 x 480 resolution, Wi-Fi, 3G, GPS, 3MP photo camera, VGA front-facing camera (for video calling), 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM and a 2GB memory card pre-installed. Now, this is very interesting - Optus support, phone, GPS, android, 512MB RAM - just about all I've been looking for
  4. $50 a year for ERSA, AIP and DAP East &West - great price, methinks or $25 for each separate product
  5. This product for on and offline reading of ERSA looks interesting - it is apparently ready for the iPhone, and an Android version (according to their website) is on its way. If it holds true to its annual subscription, I will be interested. It is also licenced by AirservicesAustralia OzRunways EFB – Know Where You’re Going | OzRunways
  6. yep winsor68 - well, that is, its linux based
  7. Hi Mark. Been looking at Android tablets for a while, and the thing is that android doesnt officially support tablet formats yet, (not till 3.0, I believe) And, according to some docs I've read, unless the tablet/device supports a phone, Google will not officially licence android for the tablet - hence, no official access to the app market, and you can be left hung out to dry when it comes to support for android updates. Lots of cheap chinese tabs, but I would suggest reading Whirlpool.net.au about what to look for in a good tablet (eg hardware specs, android version etc) Android aviation apps area bit thin on the ground, but I'm sure that as Android gains market traction, they will appear. I've even dusted off my old programming skills and am cranking out a simple aviation app before too much longer. I am currently using a Garmin-Asus A50 android phone (life time FREE map updates), and I have installed Bearing+Distance AU-NZ (flight planning and moving map software - unforunately depends on data connection to upload google maps, so no go in flight),FlightTools E6B, and a few others - still waiting for a decent moving maps app to make an appearance. Cheers Gerry
  8. Before we jump in boots and all, can someone post (if they actually know, and not just mere speculation) what conditions are being proposed for the CTA endorsement? - Is it "just" an endorsement? - Will it change medical requirements? If so, will it only affect those who request CTA endorsement? - Is there a possibility it will affect the required equipment levels of all RAA registered aircraft? I like the basic idea of a CTA endorsement (not that I think I would use it meself), but I would really like details on the short and long term potential effects on all RAA pilots certificates before giving it my support. I would hate to see RAA gain CTA endorsement, and then find ALL pilots are affected by, for example, the requirement for a class 2 medical for RAA.
  9. CALL people?? on my smartphone?? I can do that???????? I've been so busy playing with all the different apps on my Garmin A50, I didnt even know I could use it as a phone
  10. Cheap quality android GPS phone If anyone is looking for a cheap quality built Android GPS enabled smartphone, try the Garmin-Asus A50 - its currently available at Dick Smiths for $199 (Optus locked). WARNING - I have heard it may be discontinued - you have been warned. It uses Android 1.6, but Android 2.1 is available as a download, and takes about 10 (easy) minutes to install, if you wish. Full GPS, Garmin maps are all preloaded, lifetime map upgrade guaranteed by Garmin. This also means you dont need a data connection to use mapping, so it works just like a standalone GPS unit. 3.5in , 320 x 480 screen, VERY good GPS sensitivity (even works reasonably inside my steel shed). Uses a mini USB connector which is GREAT - I have those cables and connectors all over the house and car (use one in the car for the standalone bluetooth), so only need one charger - also can be charged off the PC while connected. OK, its not for everyone, esp not fanboys who MUST have the latest and greatest gadget, but it works great, and the price is right. (now, all I need is the OziexplorerCE build for android to be released, and I will be one happy novice pilot - well, thats not true - I really want an app that will, with one button press, subdue crosswinds above 5 knots ). Have not taken it flying, but works well in the car.
  11. Well, i've just spent the last couple of hours reading and attempting to digest this CASA discussion paper and I am left with the overall feeling that CASA just doesnt even consider airspace under 10,000 ft (or us small beasties who populate this airspace) as worth while dealing with. The whole focus of the DP seems to be RPT aircraft, at or above FL110, or within 20NM of of busy airports (yeah, its a simplification, but stay with me), and I sorta think it was written with that focus, and that RA aircraft and Class G under 10,000 ft got dragged into the DP either as an afterthought, or that a cut and paste exercise from a previous DP went unedited. That's not to say that it is not worth your time putting in objections or comments - far from it. But the whole focus and tone left me wondering.... (and more than a little worried.) And just another thought - can we get the RAA board to post their response to this discussion paper somewhere on this forum? Cheers Gerry
  12. Just ordered and downloaded a few maps (VTC, WAC and TAC), and loaded them into OxiExplorer - bloody MARVELLOUS stuff - and the price is definitely right. Received ECW, GEO-Tiff, Oxiexplorer and PDF versions. Well done MapTrax
  13. Do you have Javascript (not JAVA) enabled? Go to: Tools -> Options -> Content tab, and make sure Enable JavaScript is enabled. Cheers
  14. well, at the moment, there can be no accusations of not enough events on There is this progressive dinner, the Watts Bridge Festival, and the Dalby W & W. And previously, the Monto flyin (great fun), etc hopefully, by next year, with a newly minted certificate (I'm hoping), and if I can oil the hinges on the finance minister's purse, I'll be out there myself.
  15. Just a thought, But I not believe RAAus is the appropriate organisation to voice or push political views. While I am in hearty agreement with the need for political action, I see RAAus purley as the admininstration / liason body dealing with CASA (stop here if I have misinterpreted their function) . Adding a political theme to their work is probably counterproductive (not that I am for one moment suggesting CASA could take umbrage at RAAus pushing political viewpoints, and "punish" them if they pushed a non-CASA line with politicians.) However, the formation of an umbrella organisation to represent pilots views, and lobby politicians is a necessity. But RAAus is not that beast - it has an entirely different function, and should not be assuming overtly political functions. That is not to say that RAAus board members cannot speak on our behalf, but just as individuals. So, how does one form a political organisation? Not sure, but I suppose the first thing is to get expressions of interest, find common purposes, and then get interested people to assume both the public face and behind the scenes administrators. Any thoughts?
  16. In the latest Flight Safety Australia, July-August, page 58, there is an article "repercussions of the concorde disater" - well worth a read, and may provide a bit of context for the TV program
  17. Congratulations Dave. Greatest feeling isn't it, especially the turn onto final, and there's no one but you to make sure it all hangs together. Cheers Gerry
  18. I am not sure how relevant this is to your particular case Heon, but its a good read from a relaiable source re lead fouling... Lead Fouling - Shell Aviation
  19. Well geeze monty, that narrows it down to about 69% of the male attendees.....
  20. Hey Ian. What do you do with all that spare time you must have? Ever thought of going flying instead???
  21. whew.... ummm, I dont know Tomo from a bar of soap, and dont know enough about flying planes with or without brakes, but really, when its all said and done, it seems to me this tread comes down to "do you walk up to someone you consider may be doing something unsafe, or do you keep your mouth shut." There were a LOT of comments made on a thread about an Drifter??? that crashed killing two just recently, and a lot of people said "should I say something, or keep my mouth shut??" This thread is really just a discussion/example of this very subject. It seems from Tomo's comments and others who watched him, that he did a professional job assessing the situation. Others have thought that it should be brought to his attention. Others disagree with his actions. All sides are correct - I dont believe anyone is either encouraging or slagging off Tomo. They are different sides of the argument. They come down to how you perceive other's actions, and what you think should be done. But this is what a discussion is all about.
  22. Hey Windsor - great foto of my wife and dog in your large photo set, BTW (16247d1276468406-monto-2010-raaus-northern-flyin-100_1894.jpg) First fly-in for me, and the community spirit was wonderful - took us about 4 hours just to get out of the camping grounds to look at the parked aircraft, as everybody was so friendly and chatty. BIG thumbs up to organisers - great time - but perhaps next time, they could remember to turn the heater in the sky on full!!!
  23. I'm learning in a Sportstar (just completed my first solo - woohoo!!!), and even though it has a friction lock, my instructor insists that I keep my hand on the throttle at all times when doing circuits. Like ozzie says, it takes a finite time to get your hand back there, esp. if you're bouncing around a bit.
  24. I dont care how pretty it is - the sound on the low pass - the SOUND ------- aaaaaaaaaaaa you can keep your rotax and Jabiru engines - for true flying satisfaction give me a jet engine sound any day... (maybe there is a way to retrofit a noise generator to a rotax exhaust)
