  1. ahhhh ffs ft, what the hell is wrong with this initiative???? OK, the printer friendly execution left a little to be desired, but the info and concept is great.

Rather than slagging CASA off, we now know from the horse's mouth what we need to do to comply with a ramp check. I for one welcome this small initiative. Give credit where its due, and stop living under that bridge.

  2. Back in August this year, I, (along with about 20 other guys) completed a one day course on Pilot/Operator Maintenance Training, and received a Certificate of Attainment, and endorsed by both RAA and CASA.

I wonder if I still have to do the online course as well....

  3. What a great thread.

I've been getting random (phantom) reception noise every few minutes on my radio of late. (Running a Blue Top 582, btw)

I had, till this morning, a 12v iPad charger plugged into my indash cigarette lighter socket. No phone/iPad was plugged into this charger.

After reading this thread, I removed the charger, and the phantom receptions disappeared.

Plugging it back in caused the phantom receptions to reappear.

So, either I will try to find a high quality charger, or will use my 11000 mA battery pack for my iPad mini, and forgo the cigarette lighter charger

    ================================================================================

On a similar vein, is there a quality voltage regulator or indeed any other device that I can use to smooth out the choppy 582 alternator output?

  4. So overthinking thing^2Lets assume:-

    1) Tyre is tubeless and naturally has the shape we expect

    2) Aircraft is on a jack such that the wheel is off the ground and the valve is removed, allowed to equalise and then reinserted and sealed (1 atm present)

    3) let off the jack

Then as soon as the aircraft weight acts on the tyre you will no longer have 1atm present, the deformation of the tyre ensures that the pressure must rise.

To prove it, unseal the valve and much air will hiss out and the tyre will get flatter if possible.

The point? if you pressurise a tyre without weight of aircraft to the pressure called for in the POH then as soon as its on the aircraft and aircraft weight is applied you will end up with pressure above that called for in the POH

    Andy

Welllllll, yes what you say is true, to a point

However, if you do pressurize the tyre when jacked, then replace tyre on the ground, there is so much less compression of the tyre compared to the unpressurized case, that the pressure wont rise to the same extent. So yes you will go above the POH pressure, but not by very much :)

  5. Thanks HITC very informative and have also read the link supplied by Crezzi. To clear things further if using the red type plastic gerry with the yellow spout and black Mr Funnel what would be the best procedure?

Is it ok to attach the clip to the gerry handle to earth?

Is the yellow spout a problem?

Should the MR Funnel also be earthed?

Is it better to use metal containers?

and if you dont have a metal airframe, where is the best place to attach the earth strap to the airframe?

  6. I replaced my lead-acid battery in March with a LiFePO4 (Lithium IRON,Shorai brand) battery, running off a Rotax 582, with an approx 5kg weight saving.

To date, I've had zero issues with this battery, and have not had to ground charge the battery. From all my reading on the internet, it does seem to be a safe alternative to lead acid. The Rotax charging system is NOT the ideal way to charge these batteries, and I am currently looking at some system to provide an alternate inflight charging system.

I am not endorsing the use of lithium batteries, and personally will not use lithium ion/ lithium polymer batteries anywhere (after having a couple of RC batteries destroy themselves). I'm just adding my experiences to the general pool of info about this new technology.

  7. So you need to buy and Android device( Samsung ,Telstra or similar ) and then Easy VFR from Pocket FMS and then Oziexplorer for Android. Is that right?when I checked on Oziexplorer it said that the software for Android was only a trial version and would drop out after 15 minutes..Or am I just very confused.

Seems to me Apple mini with Ozrunways is popular cause it is just ...easier..??

    Andy

    Hi Andy.

No, you dont need OziExplorer at all. Just the Android device, and EITHER "Easy VFR", OR "VFR Navigation". It depends on your needs.

I like VFR Navigation, as its major strength is its simplicity - ask for a list of nearest airports, select one, and it will tell you how to get there. It wont plan a flight or show weather, but sometimes, simple is best.

However, as before, Avplan or OzRunways are both, in my humble opinion, much more polished, and complete applications.

  8. So, Barry Hempel was

-a great all round guy and great pilot

    OR

    - a bit of a barnstormer prepared to risk others

    He was

    - fully licenced to take paying passengers

    OR

    - he had restrictions of some sort on his licence

    The Yak

    - had no problems

    OR

    - fell out of sky due to mechanical issues

Yet to see any comment WITH EVIDENCE backing up which of the above apply.

He might have been the nicest guy in the world, but IF he had some problems, where was his personal responsibility hiding when taking up paying passengers (including my daughter, for a joyride on her 18th birthday, a month before his fatal crash)?

I met Barry a few times, and he was the nicest guy, and upon learning about my daughter's interest in flying, wanted to help and mentor her.

    BUT.

The buck stops with him eventually, as it must with all of us pilots, when deciding to fly or not.

Hiding behind doctors, or saying, 'it really doesn't apply to me, cause I know better', doesn't cut the mustard.

Was he fully licenced? Don't know, but it was never mentioned when we were organising the surprise joy flight.

When my daughter and I were interviewed by an accident investigator after his accident, I must admit I got pretty angry when I was told about his licence circumstances, and the risk she was placed under.

So yeah, all round nice guy, but it boils down in my view to personal responsibility, towards yourself and others. Didn't see that demonstrated that day.

  10. Lucky bugger!!!!

rego renewal sent 11th May, with stacks of photos of rego numbers, new cockpit labels etc

    Rego expired 4th June

    2 phone calls to RAA

    no info available atm

Although I was just told that there is a new dedicated person who will grab the aircraft file, and ring you back.

  11. Hi Lucas,

I push this a bit, but I reckon this video has a lot of sense about running 2 strokes, from a guy who has seen more 2 strokes than most of us.

One of the things he pushes is to take the carbs and engine back to stock before trying to resolve the issue. Also got great info regarding rejetting (basically dont do it, as your problem is prob not due to carb jetting)

    Cheers

    Gerry

  12. A longish idle descent with a two stroke on premix means it ends up with little oil in it as well as cooling off. Leave as much power on as you can comfortably do and allow your speed to increase a little as long as this is not a safety issue with VNE etc or turbulent conditions. Nev

    Exactly!!

I watch my EGT temps, and they are always tending towards the lower range, until I start descending, with low power, and they can climb very quickly.

I try to keep power up above 3500 rpm, with the nose raised a bit, so that the EGTs stay in a comfortable range

  13. Hi Ian,Does the current software support quizzes? 033_scratching_head.gif.b541836ec2811b6655a8e435f4c1b53a.gif If it does, I was thinking of developing some multi-choice qns from the John Brandon tutorials, ATC Phrases, basic aeronautical knowledge, human factors, etc, as well as some humorous ones. "Resources", would be the best place for it, I guess. There were quizzes a couple of years back, but it never got off the ground for lack of content.

Found this quiz a while ago - cant answer for the accuracy of the answers, but might be the sort of thing you are after to put on this site.......
