  1. Refer to the Govt Funded propaganda about the Generational Change. Dr. Karl poses the questions, and refers to what great technological discoveries that Australia has made in the past. An Impressive list, but we have nothing to show for it, just like the Victa aircraft, was ours, then we sold it to NZ, then when the air force were looking for a trainer, went on a world wide search, then ended up buying them back off NZ (At an inflated price) because they were a bloody good plane. Instead our Govt's (Well in NSW at least) focus on the more things, like introducing a licence to catch tadpoles. (No Joke, check the link below ) http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/wildlifelicences/FrogKeepersLicence.htm
  2. Just as a bit of an aside from a couple of posts back. I am sure you will be happy to know, along with the unemployed and homeless of this country, that a government funded organisation has just discovered that most kangaroos are left handed. We are in great hands, aren't we ????
  3. Nev. Of course not, It would involve change !!! To the student, the GPS is White Mans Magic, and to prove yourself you must do things the old way. Then you are sent on your way in a sacrifice to the gods. If you have been good, then you will be returned safely to your place of departure, but if you have been bad or didn't eat your beans as a child, then the gods will act and cause you grief. The thing that does amaze me is that you can use a calculator to do the calculations, to keep it in true perspective, I thought they may insist on a abacus, but then again, the wizz wheel is pretty close to that !!!! Will things change ????? Do a snap shot in time, and compare 1950 to today. In the 1950's Holden produced the FJ, and aicraft like the Auster's were flying around Pop the hood of an FJ Holden and compare the engine to one of cars of today, Then look in the cowl of an Auster and look into the cowl of current lycoming or continental. Which industry appears to be stuck in the time warp?
  4. Hello !!!!! We are now living in the 21st century. Having read this link, it seems that a pilot lost his way on a nav and had to do an out landing that everyone seems to have accepted as " A Can Happen" event, and the resultant search activities, no injuries, and a a banged up aircraft was a good result. If this happened 20 years ago, then I would have to agree, but it's not 20 years ago. For those who are trapped in a time warp, who learnt the old way , and believe it's the right way, strap yourselves in, and try to comprehend this mind blowing change in relation to obtaining a cross country endorsement. The first lesson is wholly and solely devoted to operating a GPS, and the flight planning and flights are delayed until the student is as conversant with the GPS as he/she is with their mobile phone. On dual nav's as a part of the flight, the student is asked to operate the GPS and select an alternate landing site as a part of the training. Then on solo's, the GPS is activated and sealed inside a Bag/Wallet. If everything goes to plan, the pilot returns with the seal intact and it's a PASS. The instructor then has the opportunity to view the GPS to see if the student was on target or any other area that requires attention. If the vaiarants (Such as with this incident) come into play, then at the time of the realisation, the student has the option to firstly work things out in a cool calm manner and rectify the situation, or if that fails, break the seal on the Bag/Wallet and retrieve the GPS, and select Way Points, Go to, and instantly gets a heading, distance, ETA etc immediately. What's the cost ??? , A x in the box and marked as a Fail, but everyone and everything is intact. Then once back on the ground, there is a recorded history of what and where it all went wrong, and why the first attempt to remedy the situation didn't work. All this safety and assurance is available now for around $100, compare that figure to this incident. You don't have to look far to see if this sort of things work. In yacht racing, Do they make them take their motors out? No, they simply disable the starting system with a seal that is installed before the race and inspected after the race, and if the need for a motor eventuates during the race, the captain uses the motor knowing that their race is over. It took the disappearance of MH 370 for authorities to recognise that aircraft tracking ability has not kept up with technolgy, where the motors of the aircraft that send messages to the manufacturer about their operations, could NOW easily have include the GPS data that would have identified it's whereabouts. And just remember that man went to the moon before he installed wheels on luggage bags !!!!!!
  5. Their might be a couple of Police getting a transfer in the near future !!!!!!
  6. SrPilot, Thanks for the link, although it did send a shiver down the spine..... to see someone totally in control, while flying his aircraft towards the upper end of it's limits, and making it look as though he was out on the expressway in a car having a leisurely drive. Then to compare that, to what happened, it almost incomprehensible !! especially when you factor in that there was another person in the aircraft who was just as experienced
  7. The only problem is, I believe there is no fuel controller point between the wing tanks & the header tank, the only controller is from the header tank to the engine.
  8. Definitely not plug and play, and probably not as simple as it sounds, as the radiator and pump are below the engine, so any air in the system will congregate up high in the furthermost cavity away from the pump (A Head) but every time you take the filler cap off, it will be full and you can run the pump all day and it will stay there. This is overcome by inserting a header tank at the end of the circuit (Where the coolant goes from being pushed to being pulled) and as the coolant flow slows due to the size of tank, any trapped air will be released and simply stay at the top of the tank (That also doubles as the filler point). If your using a cross flow radiator, don't forget to TIG in a 5mm nipple on the top of the side tank, that you use as a bleed point to ensure the radiator is full of coolant and not air. No mention about that in the instructions, then again...... What instructions? "It's a long climb to get to the top, but the top but once there it's worth it"
  9. If it's 100 deg C , then it's spot on
  10. I saw a doco about the sinking of the Bismarck from a German Naval Officer who was on board. He said they scoffed when they saw the fairy swordfish approaching, thinking it was an insult to take on the most advanced warship with antiquated equipment. The Bismarck had the latest in range finding equipment and quickly determined the range of the aircraft, but as it was the latest most modern equipment, the minimum closing speed that could be entered in was 130knts and the poor old fairy's could only get 75knts. (on a good day) This caused all the flak to explode well short of the planes, and as the machine gunners had very restricted target view through their sights , the exploding flak blocked their view of the approaching targets. In all of the attacks, not 1 plane was lost.
  11. And the other bit of info was..... the police officer stated that it was Camden Tower that received the mayday call. So that would put them just passed one of the the reporting points of Camden (The Oaks), and therefore still on Camden's frequency.
  12. It wasn't The Oaks, I was out there all day, and it wasn't until a police car arrived around 1545 to inquire if we had any planes out, that we became aware of it.
  13. Well there one thing for certain, There wouldn't be any tigers in that area to worry about...... The Yowies would have eaten them years ago..
  14. It worse than that, it's almost "The Perfect Dark Cloud" The area in mention is known as "The Nattai Wilderness Area" and is covered by 2 NSW Authorities, National Parks and Wildlife and The Sydney Water Catchment Authority and the attached link to the map, gives you an idea how human friendly they are "Where you can go and Where You Can't Go" http://www.sca.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0006/36375/Special-Areas-Brochure-Special-Areas-Map-October-2013.pdf (Judging by the returning helicopters that were flying over The Oaks and heading for Bankstown, they were tracking from where it shows "WARRAGAMBA SPECIAL AREA" ) Added to this would be CASA'a interest (Via ATSB) in getting hold of the engine to defend their recent actions, and all this happened on Easter Eve when they all would have knocked off early and went into Government hibernation over Easter. So it's all been put up there on the fan, but no one will be back in their offices until Tuesday to turn the fan on, then watch out !!!!!!
  15. I have set of LCH heads on, and no oil or water leaks, in fact it's taken me 15 months to redo the mod to the plane, flaps, canopy, covering etc and the thing I never had to pull apart or tamper with was the motor, and I have a water pressure gauge fitted into the system, and it kept a pressure right through the 15 months. In winter it was down around 4lbs & in summer it would be around the 7lbs mark, the only water I lost was from the overflow bottle when we turned the fuselage over to cover the bottom. I will agree that they were a bugger to fit, to the point where I elongated the pipes "a Bit" where they pass between the pushrods and took a foofteenth of the sides of the pusrod cover pipes so I got a space and a good seal with the O rings. I used a radiator that was the close to the size of a Rotax 912, but its a duel core and with a 1 Litre header tank as well, I can't keep any heat in the water, ( My highest reading was 45 degrees C,) so it looks like I might have to cover up some of the frontal area. I have a quad CHT (Left over from the air cooled days) and from under the plug they get to around 120 - 130 on climb then settle to 80 -95 on cruise.
  16. You are probably right !!! MARAP is the process.... and a Condition Report is the tool that will identify (Catch) those who need to use it. If so, then another interesting thread will fire up dealing with. Can a new requirement be placed on a "Registration that has been granted on a "Point of Time" determination.... In the name of safety I say it would get up. Then the new requirement, will then be in contrast to the base law (95.55) as it makes no mention of a regular inspection process, but does state a type (One off inspection) So then, the Regulator/Administrator (Who are responsible for it's introduction) must bear the costs imposed on those affected. Eg. Random Breath Tests (Now includes Drugs) In the name of safety, RBT was introduced, and a condition for holding a drivers licence was that you could be randomly tested. (New Imposition placed on existing condition) and there were already laws in place for Drink Diving in the base law. New laws were made and introduced, and the program costs lots of money to run, but the drivers tested, are not required to pay for the costs of being tested. (Definately Not User Pays) and the new costs were covered by those who introduced them.
  17. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/latest/dick-smith-flies-into-politics/story-e6frg90f-1227278120614
  18. I just heard on the 2GB 1700hr News that Dick Smith has registered his name as a Political Party. He is fed up with the bureaucracy that exists throughout society, especially in the light aircraft section.
  19. Oscar Don't get me wrong, the MARAP is a great piece of work and a great step forward for factory builts, !As you described in your post), it's just the inclusions of the 19's that stuffed it up. It's akin to comparing all the planning that went into the Sydney Olympics, then a couple of weeks out from the starting of the games, someone said "Rather than run the Modern & Para Games separately, Lets run them together, What could possibly go wrong?" A factory built aircraft has a strong data base to draw from from , a #19 Experimental does not.
  20. The Good News........ My rego has been approved and processed !! The Bad News. If MARAP is applied to a 19 reg and say the owner is a non builder, that keeps being fed the line that he cannot modify or repair his aircraft. (And believes it) What happens when he needs to repair or modify? At the moment he has 2 choices. Either cover up the problem, keep quiet and and keep flying. Or fill out an application form that is like giving someone an open cheque. Once it is filled out it's handed around and probably back and forth between CASA, an Engineer, The Manufacturer & the Tech Man, and they will all charge the owner (User Pays remember) and all this before $1 is spent on the fixing the actual problem. In the real world, you would hope that this type of owner would build a strong bond with L2"s & L4s any any other owner builder, to help and assist him to maintain his aircraft in the highest condition, but now, if there is a problem that may require attention, all of the above mentioned mentors will adopt the Shultz attitude of " I SEE NOTHINGGGG" and steer clear of him and protect themselves from the inevitable. That's just my spin on things.. But my mind maybe warped
  21. Jared... The Assistant Tech Manager
  22. Andy, Thank You for your advice on contacting the CEO. I did it in an email setting out the basics and my concerns and requested he contact me to discuss. In an hour I received a call back from Darren, and it was a 100% turn around from what I was told on Friday, it was even common sense stuff !!!! Basically, I and others like me will be unaffected, and our applications will be processed the old way. It's probably not going to be over until I receive the rego in the mail, but at least it appears it will be coming.
  23. Andy, I am the second owner, but you would think that by stripping it down including the skins, then rebuilding it including the mods with an approval letter from the manufacturer that includes new flight figures for the mods, I would be classed as the builder or re-builder at least. I'm retired, & it took 15 months, In that time I could have completed a couple of Jab kits, so whats 51% Can you direct me to the legislation that denies the second & subsequent owners the right to carry out mods on a 19 Reg. It seems that it is a term that was spoken about that many times to the point where it somehow became a law, except no one has recorded it. Well not where I can find it at least.
  24. It's good to see a couple of Board members on the forum. Let's assume that the MARAP is the magic plan that is going to improve safety beyond the greatest expectations of those who introduced it. What about the members who got caught in the trap, that is those who have started, carrying out, or like me finished the mods ? I finished in early March, then waited for a L2 todo an inspection and issue a Condition Report and carry out a Weight and Balance. Everything that was and is required under 95.55, then included a new set of photos to comply with RAA. Suddenly, overnight, on Thursday 19th March everything changed. Today, I am still 100% compliant with 95.55 (The Parent Law), but blocked by a Regulator/Administrator Requirement in obtaining registration. RAA has claimed the MARAP as their Brainchild, so that makes it pretty easy on who I target for my dilemma. Would you expect me, or others like me, to simple Suck it Up and move on by losing our asset? or Would you expect us to seek out the right to be compensated for the asset we no longer have, just because the Administrator & Regulator did a deal that was to include some Wish List laws that were absent in the Parent Law that governs them ? If your answer is the second half, then the MARAP (How good it may be envisaged to be) will come at a cost........ And that cost will be passed onto the ALL of the members. For once CASA and RAA can stand in a Court and spruik about improved safety all day long , but the fact will remain, a number of people were directly financially affected by their actions in making it an impossible program for some people to comply with, yet at the same time these affected parties are totally compliant with the Parent Law ?
