  1. Same Canopy, just in the sun and showing off the gold where the sun hits it..
  2. Sorry I haven't jumped on the bandwagon earlier, but all In had to show was a great mess. At last it's taking shape !!! I decided to give the Super Diamond a few mods that include electric flaps, sheeted wings, new canopy & new paint job starting from scratch. It's one of Gary's canopies, and with a little trimming & squeezing we got it down to Super Diamond size. I played around with the spray gun by putting a Gold Pearl over the Red base, so out of the sun it's deep Red trimmed with an over tinted Violet Pearl, but in the sun and depending on where you stand, it goes from Red through Orange to Gold.
  3. Don't know about the ACARS !! but you would imagine the circuit breaker would be in the cockpit. With a nose high attitude because of the climb, the old "Lets use the trolley as a battering ram" would not have worked, but it would have made the crew (Using any portable oxygen device) chew up their supply sooner rather than later. If something like this did happen, then MH370 has the potential to do to aviation travel, what Jack the ripper did to late night trading.
  4. Lets suppose the cargo theory. 1 flight crew member goes for a leak, remaining member locks the door, then switches off transponder, ACARS etc then depressurizes the plane. (PIC has his own separate oxygen supply) The oxygen masks automatically fall down, but the PIC increases the height and waits for the supply to run out. No one can enter the cockpit because the length of the masks won't allow it. When the oxygen supply runs out, he descends to a low altitude both to avoid radar and to maintain his oxygen needs and flies to a pre arranged landing point. This way, no one would make a call because of panic (Sucking on oxygen masks), explains the altitude changes, why phones rang out, why there is no debris.
  5. I'm using the MGL gauge (Brilliant). Sourced the Thermo-couples from China through Ebay "Aerospace". Special order with 12mm washers (Underplug), each with 2m of stainless sheathed wire probes, ended up around $4.00 ea so I got a few extra. Did the boiling water test and each one was spot on. Been in for around 3 years, never needed to use a spare yet. But then I went to liquid cooled heads, so no overheating problems, just a fancy gauge to look at.
  6. I think the rigger must have been Frank Spencer. If he didn't succeed in pulling the cable into the rotor, he was sure to get a similar result, when he jumps up to grab the cable and put a sudden offset load onto the chopper !! As they say "Some mothers' do have em" !!!!
  7. Here is a link to the footage of the C130 break up It appears the aircraft is dropping it's load when the wings fail https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bDNCac2N1o
  8. rgmwa 3A.3 Paragraph 3.4 does not apply to any other aircraft that operates under the V.F.R.: ( This is the section that leads to the requirement of a Magnetic Compass) (a) being an aircraft for which a current certificate of airworthiness as an LSA has been issued; or (b) being an aircraft for which an experimental certificate has been issued under paragraph 21.191 (g), (h) or (j) or an LSA for which an experimental certificate has been issued under paragraph 21.191 (k), of CASR 1998; if equipment is carried that provides a pilot with the same information that would be obtained by compliance with the requirements of Appendix I for operations by day, or Appendix IV if approved for operations by night. (Appendix 1 states Magnetic Compass) Does an RAA Registered (19) fall into the category mentioned in para (b) ? If so, then the Bata Scout Compass would be allowed.
  9. Silvercity, I am totally satisfied with the Super Diamond. Small, roomy, fast (110kt +), carries 5 hours fuel. Strong as (Has the same wing as the Sierra and that was tested to 14G) But the Super Diamond wing is shorter so it's stronger again.
  10. Thanks Everyone for your input. I knew someone would come and rain on my parade.
  11. No doubt somewhere it is written that every aircraft must have a compass but I cannot find where. My problem is that I want to install a more aerodynamic canopy but to do so I would have to remove the fluid compass on top of the dash & because of all the other installed gauges, I cannot fit an in-dash vertical card type. I have a GPS that has a compass display screen, plus I also have a small back up GPS that also has a compass display and not to mention the smart phone in my pocket that also has a compass feature. Can anyone enlighten me on the actual requirements and whether electronic compasses are recognised as being suitable.
  12. I will throw another vote in for Xcom. I continually get feedback from fellow pilots at the field on how clear my radio is, and with strobes & and a water pump operating I get zero interference
  13. Old Koreelah. My Oddessy came with the plane, 6 years and still going strong. Other flyers at the field are using AGM Batteries sourced from a local supplier (around $100) and are still going strong after a few years. All are in Jab 2200's Contact me if you want the link
  14. What's your thoughts on that incident. Witnesses, photos, character ID'd and more than 18 months has elapsed and CASA are still "Caring out investigations" Could there be a gaping whole in the legislation that would embarrass the authorities if it were tested in court ???
  15. Turboplanner, Your information link is 100% correct, but now apply what is in it, to the fraud that was uncovered and referred to in my link. By reading your link, this bloke should have been locked up for life, but in reality he got nothing, and got to keep his rewards, in fact the people who alerted the officials to the crime came out of it worse off !!!! Sadly, the days of where people attend court to see justice based on common sense are gone, and have been replaced by the frustrations based on the determinations of terminology, while the solicitors & barristers pat themselves on the back and say what a good job they are doing. Off Topic, but supposedly we live in a society that treats everyone equal (Bulls#$%^) If I drive my car and hit a Non Registered, Uninsured vehicle that is being driven by an unlicensed driver, I am still responsible for that persons injury, and if I am uninsured I could lose my house, savings, car and every asset I have, and that wealth is transferred to the person who was doing an illegal act. If the roles are reversed and he hits me, If I am uninsured, I get sweet FA and his life goes on as normal. Back on topic, I predict that at the end of the day, no individual will be held responsible or accountable, and CASA will end up with a big Organisational orgasm by announcing that it has uncovered a big wrong doing that it is fixing, and how lucky we are to have them there.
  16. Based on the current trends in society, it hardly seems likely that anyone will end up in gaol (Or Jail) over any issues that will be uncovered in the " Cleansing" I heard an interesting fact that no one has ever received a jail sentence as a result of an ICAC finding, and thinking back over the years there has been some doosies, it's always "We have uncovered what was going on and changed the procedures so it can never happen again". To back up my theory check this link of a multi million dollar fraud and how it was handled http://m.smh.com.au/business/profit-above-all-else-how-cba-lost-savings-and-hid-its-tracks-20130531-2nhde.html The big issue that is always a hot topic in these forums, and the big discussion of who is liable to what extent, can also be viewed this way. There was a tragic outcome, however whether the aircraft had 10 ...., 19 ....., 24 ....., 55 ...., or VH - ... under it's wing, the result would have been the same, and it's cause was brought about by a catastrophic engine failure and not a fault of it's airframe and things from there on were the result of decisions that were made by the occupants. In a nutshell it was an aircfraft in the wrong classification. There is no need to panic and ground everybody, (Groundings are always linked to safety issues) just reclassify them as their registrations come around.
  17. Has anybody had experience with using Pearl in their paint ? and does the pearl go in the base coat or in the top coat ? The effect I am after is to take a mauve/ lilac from a solid colour where it joins up against a striking color, then fade it as it gets further away . Something like the light color purple that Toyota used in their Starlets. If you looked directly at them you would see the purple, but by looking at them from an angle they appeared to be a lighter shade of purple then disappearing into silver once you looked along them .
  18. Definately Not a Quad City Challenger......... and having owned and flown one, I would hate to see them get an unwarranted bagging because they are great value for money.
  19. Consider going with a Tacho from a diesel truck. The good points are, either a 0-4000 or 0-5000 range so you get a full sweep of the gauge, plentiful supply of them, so the costs are lower & the big plus is, as the Jab alternator is ruuning on the crankshaft, there are no calculations to carry out, just connect the sensor wire to the voltage regulator input, set the dip swithes on the tacho to the number of poles on the armature, connect power in & earth, and your in business
  20. Does anybody have a working knowledge of this brand of Tacho? It was working perfectly up to a few weeks ago, but now it reads 800 - 1000 rpm over, right across the range. (Connected to a Jabiru 2200) I had a look under the cowl, and it is not the Hall Sensor type, and there are no extra wires connected to the CDI units. Where does it get it's impulses from ?????? And any ideas where to look to fix it ?????? Thanks in Advance Ron
  21. New 3w LED STROBES HAVE ARRIVED !!!!!! Taking into account all of the mathamatical equations etc. This is how I would explain it in simple terms. My 2 light heads arrived, each fitted with 9 x 3 Watt LEDS mounted on three triangular bases that are mounted inside a sealed clear half dome about 2/3rds the size of a golf ball. The whole unit weighs about 1lb & goes through 19 flash patterns. How bright ???? Well if you look at them, it's the same as looking at a camera flash, with spots in your eyes for couple of minutes. (They are that bright & that's standing around 4 meters away). Because of the strobing, the generated light is illuminated longer than a conventional Xenon flash, therefore it is picked up better by the eye & your seen better. A good Xenon Strobe may emit 80 flashes per minute, but the LED's produce over 10 times that figure per minute, & bearing in mind, the only time they are of use, are on cloudy days, a more constant light is easy to track & refocus on than 1 flash every now and then. Best of all, $200 compared to around $1000 Don't be put off on what you see on Youtube, they are heaps brighter, as the cameras cannot capture the effect accurately.
  22. Putco T10 194 168 Wedge bulb part # 16162 Tony, Like you I'm searching for the best solution. I made contact with Putco in the US, & that part number is obsolete, along with part itself, however there are agents over there still clearing out their stocks. Ron
  23. New Technology Is Here While everyone was trying to work out what was the best way to do it, It's been done. In a 1" wide x 5/8" high clear dome, they have places 6 x 1 watt LED'S (Heads only) & it is the equivilent to an 80w strobe (So they claim). You can get them in sets of 4 for around about about US$200.00 & includes the strobe driver unit, or individual domes with an inline lasher unit for US$65.00 The single units meet the Specs for a Non RFI emitting device.
  24. Hi Andrew, Not meaning to be rude, but what weight are you? I'm around 100kg & that's another good thing about the Challanger, I get to remain in the 10 rego classification by about 10 kg. I was looking at repowering it with a HKS or go for a 582 just for getting for a bit more power up my sleve, but when I did the figures I beak the 300kg barrier. It's hard to tell by the photos, but is your plane fitted with brakes? & How what's the rudder control like at low speed. I learnt on a 912 Lightwing taildragger if that's any help. I was looking at the Lightwing PR Bipe that's been for sale for a while, but the rate of climb etc, is not there, & the scary thing is that it's been advertised for years, yet the hours remain the same, and that worries me a bit. I have noticed with yours, that although it's been on the market for a while, the hours keep moving upwards, so I'm confident it's not a time bomb. Regards Ron
