  1. Came awfully close at Corowa a few years ago.Landed on the x-wind runway to avoid interfering with the great gaggle of gliders all lined up into wind on the other one.

Everything was ok until I passed a gap in the hangars at about 35 knots in three point attitude and the into wind wing flew up, the Auster started to veer badly on one wheel and I thought I was gone. Managed to get it down again with brake and aileron but must have looked awfully iffy.

    Kaz

Kaz - using the word brake and Auster in the same sentence ??

  2. Ian, what's your nozzle arrangement at the end of discharge hose? Do you insert the hose directly into fuel tank? do you have a tap or valve to control flow once the jerry can is pressurised?

I just have the basic pipe with the inline filter. As its only 20 litre cans I just need to be careful - and with the pressure relief valve its easy to cut off. I don't have over-wing tanks though.

  3. Tanami pump works a treat for me too. No power problems as I use a small foot pump - good for out bush - lightweight - no static problems either. The hose can be inserted into a filter funnel if you like. I needed 3m hose to have some slack on a Brumby high wing. It takes me just under 2 mins to transfer 20L PULP from ground level into the aircrafts tank. Sure beats juggling a jerrycan while perched on a stepladder.

I also use a Tanami pump - and incorporated a filter in the hose - works fine

  4. Hi Kaz, no we didn't take ABA. I delivered Neil's C180 MTF up to him in Gove as he is working there for a year or so with MAF. There is no fuel at Mataranka Homestead. We filled up at Borroloola and then Jabiru.

As an aside, Jabiru is not a good place to stay for people flying in as there is no availability of transport. We wanted to do the yellow waters thing but couldn't get there. Cooinda is better but was booked out when we were there.

  5. What about when all 3 are at 90-100kg? I've not flown the type, but would have thought that would have been a push.

Only just came across this thread - however here are some weight numbers for various C172 we operate (or did)

    C172P empty 684 MTOW 1089

    C172S empty 768 MTOW 1157

    C172R empty 759 MTOW 1113

    C172S G1000 empty 801 MTOW 1157

As you can see from this sample the earlier models are better at carrying a load - later ones not so much. Very good with lighter PAX

  6. With the current issues around iPad and external GPS I am going to get to the stage where I need to upgrade - either a new iPad mini with internal GPS or an android tablet with RWY.

This thread has not been active for a while - any updates on how RWY is going ? Is it close enough now to OzRunways to be a viable alternative ? Its certainly a bit cheaper to buy an android tablet such as a Nexus 9.

I have been running RWY on my phone but its hard to get a feel for it on that size device

  7. I think an aircraft altimeter is not connected to the transponder. Most transponders have an inbuilt altimeter always set to 1013.2. They are totally separate to the altimeter the pilot reads. When you set the aircraft altimeter to 1013.2 you can compare the two for accuracy.

That is correct - the transponder usually has a separate altitude encoder

  8. Its a long time ago but my first solo is still clear in my mind - I don't even remember first solo to the training area. The other one that sticks in my mind is my first nav - seeing the vast countryside away from the coast from a different perspective

The thing that most surprised me about first solo was how much better a C150 climbs with only one person in it - and then calling downwind (right hand circuit) - seeing no instructor blocking the view - and thinking that I did not have any backup for the landing.

  10. I am planning a trip up to Gove with my wife. Travelling from Burketown across to Mataranka Homestead I will need to find fuel - Mcarthur River Mines is a good option.

Has anyone flown through there ? In the ERSA it says Avgas available - and 24 hour PPR for landing. Is permission generally given ? Any info would be welcomed !
