  1. Was merely wondering whether the Cavalier may have been on extended base entering the circuit from the east. I have held off allowing Saab on straight in approach priority to land. Did not hear the down wind call from the Cavalier.
  2. I think that the only Cavalier that I've heard of is based at Wedderburn. He was probably on an easterly course from his base so may have been joining on an extended base leg. In that case it is natural that he would expect priority. Just an opinion. Don
  3. Announcements are 20 to the dozen from the PM, but...will it eventuate and when? My scepticism has been overfed lately. Don
  4. We were there in '91. I had the Pteradactyl. A storm blew in on Saturday night and overturned a few aircraft. Pictured below you can see Howard Rockey's Scout inverted. Me with the coffee cup on the right.
  5. Only have 2 hands. Need to : a) Pick up 1 notch of flap, b) Add power, and c) control pitch and perhaps roll (in x-wind), All simultaneously before the end of the strip. Been flying for most of my adult life and yet to come to grief. Seriously, this thread is mainly to draw peoples' attention to an ergonomic problem in the J-160 - 170 Jabirus which are mainly well designed and straight-forward to fly. Don
  6. Thanks for your thoughtful and helpful replies. My problem is that by the time I am stabilised following touch-down the flaps need retracting and the switch is located directly in front of the stick. Just when application of take-off power is required my left hand is off throttle and on the switch. I agree that a flap switch on the stick grip would help. Had a ride in a Bonanza the other day and flaps were :- Up; Aph (approach),and : Dn. with a light for "in transit". Something like that would do. I agree that mechanical flaps would be simpler and more tactile.
  7. I have transitioned, in the past 6 months, from flying my Thruster to the club Jabiru J-170. Never before having to manage flaps this is the major change for me. So, when doing touch & go circuits, sometimes need to pull off full flap after touchdown to 1/2 flap for take-off. Why not have a detent flap switch enabling selection of full/half/no-flap relieving one of the chore of a)holding the stick, b) managing throttle and, c)holding flap switch to re-set 1/2 flap while being busy managing the take-off? And, for that matter, why is there no friction nut on the throttle? Just askin'.
  8. Tony Hayes was keen on an insopection port in this area. He incorporated it into his "Swift pod" which has disappeared since his passing.Don
  9. Brendan, sad to see this but getting replacements easily is good. I rebuilt the tailwheel recently and it did steer well.
  10. Looks very nice! What diameter is that prop?
  11. Media of all colours use denigrating labels to colour their reports. "Dictator Dan" anyone???
  12. Earlier Drifters (Maxair I think) Had a weakness below the engine support strut. Casper could know more.
  13. Ross did a UACR on a Kitfox for us that we picked up from Monto in 2013. Honest , knowledgeable and all 'round nice bloke. Often takes the best before time!
  14. Oh T88, are you becoming the new Tony Hayes?? Cowra to be Thruster Central, Yay!
  15. My understanding is that no Thrusters came from the factory with doors fitted. All were manufactured so retro-fitting doors would be problematical. Of course many owners took an alternative view.
  16. Thrusters have never had doors.
  17. I like Jabiru idea... hinged cover with magnet to keep it shut. Oil dipstick cover on top cowl.
  18. To my knowledge, no T300 had rear cockpit bulkhead installed when constructed. It is a positive mod but, due to the restrictions placed by regulators, not approved.
  19. Organo-phosphates are bad news but so is the thinking that 400hp to propel 1 fun lover through the sky is alright. Hang gliding or paragliding is more conscionable these days
  20. More problems for the Boeing 'team'. https://edition.cnn.com/2021/07/13/business/boeing-787-dreamliner-faa/index.html
  21. Speaking of Macchis...We had a young RAAF visitor to Holbrook one day. He was speaking to Mick Parer telling the tale of punching out at Sale. As Mick questioned him he stated that he followed the procedure, waiting for the rudder pedals to become slack before pulling the exit handle. (The rationale behind this, apparently, was that a fire in the tail tube would burn its way out, then melt the rudder cables. Directional control being lost, any attempt to steer away from impacting people/structures on the ground became no longer possible.) I won't forget the bemused expression on Mick's face as he said, "Be stuffed if I'd wait that long!" This is as I recall it. Don't shoot me - I'm only the messenger, Don.
