  1. welcome! if, by the difficult subjects you mean maths & physics, just remind yourself that you too can be a "brainiac" (in the words of my CFI) able to solve the density altitude equations in your head. and all that maths and physics will make it trivial to pass the BAK.
  2. 5.5HP@5500rpm. is that each? those motors claim to be more than 10hp each but I wouldn't trust them at that much. I think that tuning them for 5.5hp@5500rpm would be pretty gentle on both them and the battery pack. I had a look at these motors (and the full powertrain) a year or two ago as part of an electric mini project, but have you seen the price on an old mini body? utterly crazy. I'd be interested to see how well dale's flies, and what problems he has with it.
  3. a bucket with very big wings. around MTOW it can be tricky to lose height because the clean plane is so slippery.
  4. those calculations look actually pretty good. the batteries are 1lb each, so 96lb worth of batteries. less than a passenger. each battery is 72WH (or just under), so that's 7kWh from the batteries. so 2 hrs of flight at 3kW. the real question is, is 5hp enough to take off on? I'd be pretty scared of how slowly it accelerates on ground roll. ozzie: I'm in the hunter. want me to electrify your Lazair?
  5. you could have lift from: - the nose being pointed above the horizon, and thus some of the thrust being lift - lift from any vertical surfaces (ventral fin, tail fin). not that these would give you enough lift. I have an urge to go build an RC plane that can do this now.
  6. I did that it reverse the other day - rotated a bit late by myself. if you don't watch it like a hawk you're over Vfe. by myself I have to have it super steep or else it wants to go above Vy let alone Vx.
  7. dexter: must be under the direct supervision of a CFI. see ops manual 2.07 3a2. tomo: I'm setting up time at a bunch of different schools. thanks for the advice.
  8. they're quick little things, eh? what's the best climb you've ever gotten out of them? I think I hit 1700fpm once.
  9. thank you! volunteer with RFDS... as a doctor, or what work experience?
  10. My instructor's comfort zone involves banking the plane faaar beyond my comfort zone (I'm comfortable to about 50 degrees).
  11. so I now have my RA cert and 27 hours under my belt. I'm learning to navigate the 25nm around my training airfield with the remaining solo hours I need for the PAX endorsement. The NAV endorsement is a bit harder to get because my CFI isn't always around (I got most of my training from the SI). the goal is eventually CPL, but that's a very very very very eventually - I am in no hurry to get my CPL. how do I improve my flying? where should I go next?
  12. except that I am going to stalk you and move to YWVA for my xc.
  13. thank you. my first card took 3 days.
  14. ... and it's done. how long does it take for the card to come in the mail?
  15. the other problem is that the oaks is 600ft higher than camden and 10nm closer to the mountains. yscn says calm and 5000 ceiling. next attempt: tomorrow.
  16. that's because takeoffs are optional, landing is compulsory.
  17. the YSCN metar at the moment says 8 knot headwind. do you think it can swing 90 degrees overnight?
  18. That's twice it's been cancelled. Hopefully tomorrow morning's the charm, eh?
  19. Rescheduled for tomorrow morning. Currently YSCN says it's blowing 13 knots from 30 - so 6.5knot headwind and 11knot crossswind. Sounds like a great wind to do the fast half-flap approach on.
  20. and I am no longer earthbound. 4.9 hours of solo time. I had to come in when the rains hit our airfield, and my pilot cert flight check was cancelled by the heavens. planning that 0.1 hour (one circuit, then stop to pick up CFI and become certified.)
  21. Having a look at the map an the restrictions, it seems that that area isn't restricted on weekends?
  22. I think it was more than 300fpm. more like 500fpm. climbed at something like 1700fpm without the instructor, on a cold dense morning. also much harder to force down. i may have pushed the "simulation" part of the exercise a bit by coming in low and flat, throttled back. pretty heavy. nailing that final crosswind landing when my instructor called me in due to adverse winds felt really good. just need my last 4 solo hours and I'll be about ready is what my instructor says.
  23. yes, that was my first solo. the LSA55 only has elevator trim so it didn't affect that, but with a right seat, I had to keep constant left stick pressure. without, I could almost let go.
  24. sfGnome: my instructor thinks that that particular LSA55 is set up for single person use and the weight of the right seat occupant is what is making it always roll right. to prove it, he got out. I then learnt what the term 'homesick angel' means.
