1. Hi Arthur I always thought that if you wanted to climb you had to find air where the VSI or Vario was in positive territory! REgards
2. Hi Don I saw an article on the Flightcell 2Go a year or two ago but could not recall the name or detail. It seems to be an improvement on whatever was available previously with its cabin noise swuppression and built in amplifier . I have no idea how the components I have bought will behave as I am yet to put it all together and it will be some time before I get it in the air with the engine running. The write up you have posted is good on detail. The other post from Goolwa also pointed out the good results with CDMA over part of the western part of NSW as being far superior to the GMS system which was continuously dropping out. Regards
3. Hi Mark Thanks for that Mark. However, you're right on all counts. Leeton did not have one in stock after a five minute search and after another five or so the sales assistant found it in the catalogue. Not sure whether it was Dick Smith or Jaycar. So I was back home in about 15 minutes. I have a Jaycar catalogue but thought the shop may have had it in stock and it is about 1 km away and I can usually park within 60 metres. Their freight should be less than mine even with a mark up. Regards Ross
4. Hi Theo Yes I am sure about the cost. I made the fatal mistake of selecting Fed X-press. So the detail was: Unit price $US31.60 Freight $US37.63 Total $US69.30 = $A93.85 Ouch Next time I will be far more careful. Regards
5. Hi Geoff My valve is still in the packet, see above. The photo was taken probably ten minutes before I posted it. You are way ahead of me. I have suddenly also realised that I must do something with the fairings. So a wing prefit makes a lot of sense. However I still have to close up the fuselage. So there is a fair bit of work there. I am on about my third readjustment of behind the panel wiring at the moment (too embarrassed for photographs!). I saw a professional job on a Jabiru panel about two years ago in Wagga. I wish I had taken lots of photos. Regards
6. Forgot to wait. Ordered from Spruce. Total including freight Au$93.36. This is invoiced as the Jabiru version. Regards Ross
7. Hi All My Nokia model 2125 adapter for 2.5 mmDin connection arrived a day or two ago. The only problem was that it was 3.5 mm Din socket instead of 2.5 mm. So I am now waiting on a 3.5 mm plug to 2.5 mm socket adapter to make the connection complete. Regards

Hi Jan Once the flaps are installed on the wings life is not so simple. If the end of the wing is dropped with the strut removed the flaps will be damaged and the fairingsfor streamling epoxiedto the fuselage level wth the inboard side of the flaps will be crushed. Captain (Geoff) was yet to epoxy thefairingsto the fuselage as am I. Another Geoff suggeststhat it is easier to get the fairings mounted at the correct position (angle of attack wise) if the wings and flaps are also installed. Itis not so easy to adjust the angleafterwards with a heat gun on the fairings. Best to (I don't know if I have to) remove the flaps before removing the wings. There are alsofairings at the inboard and outboard ends of the struts to consider and remove if they have been mounted. The book is in the garage - too far away! Regards Ross
9. When ice melts it absorbs 80 calories of heat per gram of ice to change it to water at the same temperature. So the polar icecaps are working as an airconditioner for the planet so far. Once it all melts then an additional 80 calorieswould raise the temperature of that gram of water by 80 degrees centigrade. Once the ice capsare gone the temperature of the rest of the planet may take off. :yuk: Once water gets to 100 degrees centigrade it takes 540 calories to turn each gram into steam with no change in temperature. Once it is steaman additional540 calories would further raise the temperature of a gram of steamby 1080 degrees centigrade. :yuk: :yuk: :yuk: :yuk: :yuk: :yuk: Ross
10. Hi All The Jabiru instructions for air starts requirestopping the prop windmilling by pulling up near the stall. Engage the starter motor to get the motor to spin at +300 rpm to get a spark. Do not engage the starter motor with a slowly spinning prop or ring gear damage etc may result! Regards

Hi PA He might adopt the Griffith aerodrome solution. Ag owner building a deep sea fishing boat in his hanger on the airfield is going to remove the roof off the hanger and use a crane to lift the boat out. Even then vertical clearance may be a problem to get it to Port Fairey! Regards
12. Hi Paul Thanks for that Paul. Yes she just needednine more days to make her 89th birthday. Regards to all
13. Hi Roger My mother passed away in Carrama 1, the non mobile part of gereatric part of Leeton District Hospital, yesterday at 13:25. She had been there for 9 years and previously in Narrandera Nursing home. A complicated story which I might tell you more about later. Anyway today with a few members of my family here from Sydney and I just heard another brother from Sydney has arrived as well. Well those pesky Narrandera planes have been flying over or within view of our place again. I reckon there were at least 12 circuits of Leeton by a plane with a rego ending in something like 365. I wish I was up there. Anyway regards to all RAA flyers. I must get back to family committments Regards Ross
14. Hi Peter (Turtle) The phone in the photo is just a pic of the folder that comes with the adapter from Adams Aviation at Bankstown aerodrome. I suspect that itwas faily ancient and all is really now outdated as you have pointed out with headsets now available with mobile phone connectivity built in. I think the guy at Adams Aviation even mentioned in August that there was a new David Clarke headset coming out about late in the year (2006) that would also have built in mobile connectivity or it might have been active noise reduction or both! This built in connectivity presumably does away with some of the losses you get with multiple connections and therefore less things to go wrong. However all theRF connection both ways is still done by the phone and has nothing to do with the aircraft radio aerial. For those unfortunates like me that already had our headsets and our mobile phones this is an option without spending a lot of money. You may also find at the moment that once you get away from the capital cities that the CDMA will perform better than the digital phones although the digital ones are supposed to give better coverage in the cities amongst city buildings. However my wife and I use our CDMA phones to find one another when shopping in the CBD in the big stores in Sydney with no problems of coverage. Regards Ross
15. Hi Rob What gear are you using GMS or CDMA and what kind of aircraft. Is the AC composite or metal? Some time ago somebody did an article in one of the ultralight magazines on this subject. They suggested that they got good reception up most of the east coast (if my memory servesme correctly) and their phone wason the CDMA network ("code division multiple access" whatever that means) which would also make it Optus or Telstra. I do not know what the effect of the change in the CDMA network will be aside from needing a new mobile. I think I was told by my local supplier that the existing CDMA system will not be turned off until2008 (which end??). I'm not sure when the new system will be activated. He also claims that the new systemwill have a better coverage than the existing CDMA network. Regards Ross
16. Hi Dave I did a search for one for a 5110 and turned up the following site for an older 5110 to connect to a 2.5 mm Din. It is overseas by the look of it and I don't know if that is what you want! By the way what are the details on your main adapter? http://www.westsidecellular.com/store/nokia5100.html Regards Ross
17. Hi Crew Doesn't look like Brobenah (Leeton)! Does it have a double barrelled name like T.. O...? Regards
18. In August this year I bought a "Pilot GSM Phone Adapter" from Adams Aviation at Bankstown aerodrome. This cost $99 and comes with a certificate from Adams Aviation. This seems a bit expensive but I guess it doesn't have much of a turnover. The adapter shown connected to a phone via the 2.5 mm Din pin and an extra small adapter to suit that phone (not a Nokia). The leads on the left plug into the aircraft sockets and the headset plugs into the marked sockets. The adapter'smain male connectors,on two leads, plug into the headset radio jacks of an aircraft instead of the normal headset plugs. The two headsetplugs are in turnplugged into the set of matching sockets on the adapter. There is athird lead on the adapter with a 2.5 mm stereo Din plug to connect to a Mobile phone. This setup is supposed to allow you to use the radio quite normally and use the mobile phone to dial out or receive calls using the headset earphones and microphone provided your phone has 2.5 mm stereo Din type plugs. My mobile (at the moment) is a Nokia model 2125 CDMA phone so I needed another small adapter in between the Din plug and thephone because of the wide Nokia type connection. So I did a Google search "Nokia 2125 adapter" to find thespecific adapter for the Nokia 2125 model phone. There are something like 800 phone accessory items on the ebay site below. It cost me $8-50 plus $4-50 for postage. It should be here in a couple of days. http://stores.ebay.com.au/ebuyphone_W0QQsspagenameZADMEQ3aBQ3aEOIBSAQ3aAUQ3a45QQtZkm I had been trying tofind an adapter for this phone for months. I will let you know how it goes without the Jabiru engine running. Regards Ross
19. Hi Clem I am not trying to denigrate your advice on frequency of servicing or inspection of the engine. On the contrary I would like to know more about it and what items can and do go wrong. It seems to me that there is a lot more you could tell us to look out for especially with your experience compared to us novices with none. There must also be changes over the life of the engine which it would be nice to know about. I look forwards to hearing more from you on Jabiru aircraft and engine maintenance or inspection. Regards
20. Hi Crew It looks like the white adhesive colour on the back of the covers largely dissapeared once it had dried overnight. But you can clearly see the colour difference from each side of the felt of the two pieces on the left of the pic - nothing to do with the adhesive! Ross
21. Hi Clem The engine number of my 2200 engine which came with J160 kit #14 is 22A 1906. I think that my engine has not had all the revised oil pump mods according to its engine number. I am inserting a text version of the Jabiru revised TBO notice posted on the Jabiru company site. It is interesting to note that the revised TBOs do not apply to 2200 motors with serial numbers before 711 or before 119 for the 3300 motor. So what changed in the motors at those serial numbers and where were they up to building and selling kits when that happened? I was also under the impression that manufacturing of the LSA55s virtually ceased, but not quite, once they started building the J160s. JABIRU AIRCRAFT PTY LTD P.O. Date: 11th May 2002 Jabiru Aircraft Pty Ltd Document No: JSB001.1 Filename: Page: Revised Jabiru Engine TBO'su Service Bulletin 2 of 2 Revised Jabiru Engine TBO’s Jabiru Engines 2200 A,J & B models & 3300 A model. Top End Overhaul at 1000 hrs & Full Overhaul at 2000 hrs. For a top end overhaul to be undertaken the following criteria must be met. 1. Engine serial number from 711 (2200) 119 (3300) Earlier serial number engines would usually have a full overhaul at 1000hrs. 2. Has not met with an internal partial failure or exhibit abnormal noises or wear patterns. 3. At least 1 oil filter prior to the overhaul has been opened and inspected and found to be free of bearing material. 4. General running and maintenance of the engine has been satisfactory, no undue oil burning or usage, no undue oil leaks, no undue stoppages such as prop strikes, no internal ingestion of foreign bodies or materials or internal contact. 5. Engine is in running condition and airworthy. Now the time for a full overhaul has been increased to 2000hrs providing that the criteria above is met before and after the top overhaul and that a top overhaul is carried out at 1000hrs. For details on the steps involved in top overhaul contact Jabiru Aircraft. Note the two different dates on the top of the Jabiru note. What was page 1 was dated 11th May 2004 and the top of page 2 was dated 11th May 2002. No doubt more service bulletins will appear as the engines get more hours up. This particular one is not the latest. Regards Ross
22. Hi Crew A bit more work done today. Vacuumed the luggage compartment & covered the strobe output wires, the aerial wires in the luggage A & B compartments and some fuel lines. Made up some new covers for wiring & fuel hoses and put more goo on them than previously because the velcro was coming loose on previously done covers - disaster the goo went right through the felt and is showing up on the other side. They will work but look terrible. I will have to do them again - later! Apply a sealer first then the adhesive perhaps. Made another mistake. I should have fitted both doors before fitting the instrument panel. It is going to be possible but more awkward fitting the pilot side door. The passenger door was pre-fitted so that the hinge holes are drilled for that side but not the pilot side yet. I am waiting on a parcel from Jabiru which includes some more 10 gauge wire to make up for some rearranging of the wire behind the panel. Covering the aerial wire behind the passenger seat Covering the strobe high & low voltage wiring - the 12V supply is up over the pilot side door. Pilot side - radio jacks with instrument panel suspended in the foreground Making up some new velcroed covers Disaster - the adhesive is showing on the outside of the ones I have turned over and the felt (not Jabiru felt) is a different shade of grey on each side and I have mixed them up! Maybe I should just put dark curtains on the back windows! Regards Ross
23. Some selected passages from the Leeton Irrigator paper of Oct 24 2006: According to todays Leeton paper: "The contractor, Airservices Australia , has recently inspected the runway cable and associated lighting and has provided a costing of $1000,000 (for them) to undertake replacement of the cabling and transformers.(at Leeton Narrandera Airport) According to todays Leeton paper: "Shell Australia has now announced itintends to remove the fuel facility for the airport in early 2007, including the recently upgraded pump and underground fuel tanks." (new regulations) ".....conversion to an above ground operation woulld cost between $50,000 and $70,000". "Narrandera Council is proposing to defer resealing works at the airport until next financial year." "The estimate for the replacement of runway lighting will be accepted, but negotiations with Shell will continue for the replacement of the fuel facilities, with up to $42,000 being funded depending on the outcome." Regards Ross
24. Hi Ian Since my J160 is not airborne yet I can wait 'till you have it online. Regards
25. Hi All What aircraft from Narrandera flew over Leeton twice around 18:30 this afternoon and disturbed my snooze after a couple of glasses? Next time tell me so I can get a better view! You should know by now that I cannot sleepthrough the sound of a light aircraft engine particularly if it sounds like and lookes like a Jabiru. :) Regards Ross
