Yep, as of yesterday afternoon I'm no longer shackled to the 25 NM circle! It took close to three hours of flying, but I passed my Nav flight test! There was a bit of everything thrown in - good weather, bad weather, strong winds, diversions and some crosswind landings. All in a days' flying! Somewhat jealous right about now! Today, I just had to put up with watching the departing aircraft from Coldstream Airport into a beautiful blue sky and the rolling hills of the Yarra Valley. Not as good as actually flying!

Thanks Turk. I plan to do it with someone experienced before tackling it alone. The 2500' issue still confuses me, though.

I figured that they had to make some kind of limit that is safe for everyone (as per Mick's comment). 25 NM is a pretty easy number to remember. If you were to fly out close to the edge, turn and fly around the inside of the circumference and then fly home you'd be flying over 200 NM. That sounds a little more exciting than 25 NM!

I am looking forward to flying this some day when I get my cross-country endorsement. My question is regarding the assigned heights for this route: 1500' West to East is fine... No worries there. East to West is assigned 2500'. Wouldn't that encroach on the 2500' Class C airspace? When is it considered 'busting' controlled airspace? 2501'? Thanks in advance for your guidance.

I have wondered the same thing... Mostly because there are no other airports within 25 NM of my home one! I always wanted to visit that one airport 27 NM away!

The 170 seems to be a little more forgiving at slow speeds. During the hold off/flare there us a nice roll off of lift (I think possibly because of the bigger wings, but also the winglets). When the 160 decides it is finished flying, and if you haven't got it nice and close to the ground - be prepared for a simulated carrier landing!

Went on a low level sortie, which was supposed to go to Wedderburn and St Arnaud, but we may have gotten momentarily geographically embarrassed and ended up in Charlton!
