  1. I agree the chance of becoming dinner for a toothy is very very very...........lowI know your logic but having fallen overboard from a yacht and watching the yacht sail with a full set of sails away from me I wasn't thinking of drowning or of being cold and wet, I was thinking of a big set of pearly whites coming for me. thaaaaaat was a tough day.

  2. That's what they said about mining when I started. We used to kill one miner per thousand per year in 1970. Turns out it wasn't inherently dangerous at all, it is safer than the construction industry, logistics and many other activities. But we needed to knuckle down and fix it.

We can fix it but not on a yearly fee of $220.00. Now if we were serious a fee around $5000.00 per year would give raa the needed fund to set out on an education program that would fix it completely. As has been mentioned it's been done in mining but notice no mention of the cost. The mining industry could afford it, rec flying cannot, at lease I can't and won't. If I go flying and come to grief I won't blame you I'll blame myself. I'll wear the pain and I'll wear the cost. The idea that we as a collective pay is only true to a very small degree.

  3. yes, but a financial advisor is more of a salesman for financial products, nothing more.. you will find degree qualified economists and the like designing said products...

    Now this worries me...

really? used to be common practice to use Zip ties instead of proper hose clamps? i have never seen a zip ties as a hose clamp, ever, anywhere. not even in a goKart.

I can assure you that they were common place in early ultralights and still being used. If you doubt their effectiveness get a piece of hose worm drive clip on one end and cable tie on the other and pressure test until one leaks, you will be surprised. Then replace the worm drive which failed with a cable tie and increase the pressure until the something breaks you will be surprised. Then throw away the piece of broken fuel hose.

  4. I would say that most RAA planes are in far better condition then our GA counter parts as people that fly for fun love there sport and you would find that most put hours of time into the pride and joys where the ga guys relies on lames to look after there craft and use there craft for transport rather then there second love but there are some

Absolutely Doug that is what I see without question, All of the aircraft that are in my circle are as you say have hours spent on them for the love of it.

The GA aircraft are I suppose working so the different pilots don't care as much and their getting long in the tooth.

  5. Maybe we could do that in the thread on the issue? Somehow I don't think the members would like a $70 increase membership fee with the option to claim a $70 rebate by switching to digital. What the board has done is a much better option forward, letting those members opt-in to receiving the paper version at the new cost. Yep it was free before but now it's not, just like a lot of things these days.I don't believe the Board has tried to hide anything in regards to the magazine, it's not something new, it's been on the table for months now (was it back in Oct it was voted at the board meeting?).

The main point is the mag was never free it was part of the membership fee, in fact it used to be itemised.

PS [ I support the new position regarding the mag]

  6. I'd like to say that I support the board in all of their decisions of late and commend them for their professional approach to what appeared to be a difficult financial situation and declining credibility. But why would the president stand up and say the good news is no increase in membership fees when we all know [and he does too ] that a reduction of services [paper mag ] amounts to the exact same thing. Why not say it as it is so that the boards intention and thinking is clear to everyone. This area needs to improve, all other areas are spot on.

  7. I was part of a group that called an Extraordinary GM to try and unearth the failings in a way that all members could see...... I believe that the group was successful in that endeavour because the old board members that presided over the audit timeframe mostly over the next 12 months resigned or were replaced through elections and a substantial portion of the group I was part of now, are board members of the organisation, myself being the last to take office in October last year.

And now the present board has honoured a board member with life membership who was part of the problem. Geee

  9. Hi guys, I'm in the process of putting a 912 uls in my 701 and I need a new cowl. the amount of work to change my existing cowl is too much. So if anyone has a new one sitting around or a used one or even a damaged one I would be interested.

    Thanks Terry

  10. I take notice of this subject as a matter of my personal interest, In tas because we are small in number and our groups are small in number as well, our influence on one another is greater. This comes from the cfi down not the other way around. I have not found one single person who didn't know mtow off the top of their head [remember it has to be placarded on the dash] nor have I ever found anyone flying over wieght. [ I have not be cheeky enough to suggest to someone we weigh the contents of their plane yet] If the cfi sets the standard others follow. I'll bet in Merv's little circle of of students, bfr returns, worshipers he does not need to constantly retrain them because they allow their standards given to them by their instructors to drop away between bfrs. It is my belief that a reminder from time to time of a pilots responsibilities is a far better tool than a mallet

  11. In defence of the LAME...he has to pay rent and insurance on his hangar base, he can't just work out of his ute on the field like an L2. He must pay a fee every year to keep his licenses and ratings current. When he does any job, even a lowley tire change he has to compile a work package and list all who worked on the aircraft, any parts that may have been used down to every nut and washer, and record the GRN ( goods record number) of all those parts, all details of the aircraft, and this all has to be filed and kept to conform to CASA regs. He also has to make sure he is qualified and appropriately licensed to work on your aircraft type.

He must make sure his hangar operators insurance policy covers him working on your aircraft should there be any resulting lawsuits.

Additionally he is also responsible when returning an aircraft to service ( which he is doing by signing your logbook) that all applicable ADs are in place as required on that aircraft. If you crash and die on your departure it all comes back to him as the last signatory in the log book. And last but not least he has to make an entry in your logbook for work performed....some LAMES charge a flat $100 for this service alone.

Oh and all these paper records have to be stored somewhere for at least 5 years and must be produced for checking at anytime during a CASA audit when requested.

Sort of makes that $325 bucks look like good value doesn't it ?.......

no it doesn't it's thief and no amount of pretending will change that

  12. Well, it has been stated on this site in a number of threads that raa should stand up to casa. Now they have we all need to stand behind them. Some will bemoan the cost to them and the possible ramifications to their flying privileges, I say you can't have it both ways. I commend the president for what appears to be a very strongly worded letter, the intent being to solicit action, if the action is to be the one we want and need the casa needs to see a united front from all of us. Sit down hang on and enjoy the ride.

  13. I think that is one of the worst ideas I've heard in a long time.I have nothing at all against paying my landing fees where due, however fail to see why RAAus should hand our details over on a silver platter. You cannot just log on to the RTA and find out who drives car ABC-123, why is it considered acceptable for aircraft?

    you can

  14. Andy, I noticed you didn't comment on the figures DWF offered. They appear to be correct to me. If this is so Raa is up to their old tricks again. What happened to openness and honesty. Good, bad or ugly the truth is required, we CAN handle the truth.
