  1. My instructor taught me an easy rule:If it's written, it's true. If it's spoken, it's magnetic.

Thus, all TAF, ARFOR, METAR, SPECI etc are in true. ATIS will be magnetic.

Hey, that's a good one/way to remember it.

  2. I know how important the ERAS is and why it needs to be carried.

But as it is, it is used to resolve specific problems at specific airports. By that I mean it tells you the frequencies, etc of the airport.

If you have a "real" problem, thumbing through the back of the ERSA would be a bit difficult.

Yes, I appreciate there *IS* a lot of good stuff there. Finding it is the trick.

I was thinking of what is the "basic" things which would be handy to have at your finger tips on all flights. 018_hug.gif.8f44196246785568c4ba31412287795a.gif

Yes, I also appreciate that some things would seem "obvious" to some people, but from what I have seen on shows, etc, it is times like that when people's memories go out the window.

    Emergency frequency 121.5 for instance.

Light meanings, for both on/off ground.

I am sure not everyone knows them THAT good.

Pattern to fly in/out of controlled airspace with no radio.

Anyway, it is open for discussion. I am just interested what others have looked back and thought "Gee that would be handy to know in emergencies".

  3. Quick thing to check is what that field actuall is.

In that screen press the menu button and then select the "change data fields".

Go to that field and press enter (or what ever it needs) and check that it is actually showing distance to next.

One thing which has me stumped:

Why is it that initially you say it is showing distance to next, then after two waypoints is showing distance from start.....??

Oh, and are you talking about a data field or what is on the map screen?

    I only have a 96C so a 296 is a bit different.

  4. turn the batteries around??!!:ah_oh:

    That's a bit of a worry.

Reverse voltages won't do them any good either.

I would stick with taking them out, or to keep the whole thing as small as possible, get a piece of paper and put it between two of the batteries to act as an insulator.

That way there is no voltage path possible so less chance of problems compared to turning one/them around.

    :rotary:

I guess that is what is happening. But you may want to confirm about the battery thing.

Does that mean that they are not *IN* the device - rather than *WITH* the device?

Trannsporting a device with batteries inserted and the device being turned on can cause problems, but having the batteries not in the device should be ok.

I'd check up on that a bit more.

There was a recent thing on one of the Yank shows where a woman was checking in her baggage and something was buzzing. This caused the evacuation of the whole airport.

Turns out it was her VIBRATOR which got bumped and turned on by mistake.

Though funny in hind-sight, you don't want that kind of thing happening.

  6. I just attempted a human factors exam.

It was a "walk in and do" go, so I guess I shouldn't complain.

** This is simply a statement and not an attack on the school/person/instructor/etc where I was.

    Problem noticed:

One of the questions was about drinking time to flying.

    a: 8 hours.

    b: .022 blood alchahol.

    c: It doesn't matter

    d: 8 hours or .022 blood alchahol.

    The correct answer is D

Yet, while chatting with another CFI, who has been to the "Human factors" thing in Canberra, etc, said that there is no reference to blood alchahol level in the testing.

Honestly I would say that if "D" is correct, then by default "B" should superseed "D".
