  1. The Co v19 alleged pandemic (I don't do acronyms), is over. Get on with it Bex!

     

    On February 6th, there were 25,000 infected and 500 deaths

     

    On February 13th, 60,000 infected, and 1400 deaths.

     

    Today, February 20th, it is 76,000 infected and 2200 deaths, and that is with all businesses closed and everyone staying indoors. There is no cure at this time, and it ain't stopping. The UK seems to be the only Country taking it deadly serious. Japan doesn't want to say a thing because it's concerned about the affect on the Olympics, which may yet have to be cancelled. America, well they're Americans: "Our Flu is bigger than your Flu, and stop eating bats ....".

     

    Anyway.... I am traveling straight to my factory on deserted roads, and straight home again, with no human contact otherwise.

    Never thought about it before, but a rudder is a "bum steer", literally!

     

    My laser and sheetmetal fold shop are still closed at the moment, won't be open for another week apparently, so still bringing out the old skills and making my rudder by hand.

     

    So time for ribs. No, not the ones you eat, though I am feeling hungry now thinking about them....

     

    Anyway, drew up and drilled a master pattern

    clamped them together and match drilled them with my drill jig as one.

    but I admit I don't much like it very much after being so used to the precision now with using cnc laser, so will be happy to get back to that shortly.

     

    I think I have a callus on my hand, just like a worker, that will require plastic surgery, I'm certain.

  2. I was delighted that some piano hinge got through to me that allowed me to make a start on the Rudder and after that, the HS Elevators.

     

    But the laser and sheetmetal shops are closed of course, so I am having to slum it and cut, drill and fold with my hands, MY HANDS! just like a Peasant, oh the humility, I'm glad my Grand-Mother isn't around to see how low I have fallen ...

    Rest assured M61 I almost choked on my beer.

     

    It's all give and take, not a problem for me :-)

     

    Some supplies got through to me yesterday, so I'm back into it.

     

    I didn't have any piano hinge left that I thought I did (well I can't find it in the factory anyway) and as simple as no titanium oxide to spray between the assembled parts for ant-corrosion is what was stopping me the last week and a bit.

     

    Yesterday I hand made (laser and sheetmetal shops are closed of course) the VS lead edge fairing, if for no other reason than for the people who keep asking me if I'm leaving the lead edge flat like the 3D drawing, sigh ...

  4. Propolis honey is available in most Chemists in Australia & some in capsule form so you don't have to use a spoon. Propolis is a resinous substance collected by bees from leaf buds and barks of trees especially poplars & conifers. It is used to support a healthy immune system & has antioxidant properties to help fight free radicals. I have never used it but it is widely accepted in Western complimentary medicine.

     

    The link I will get, eventually, is one of the highest rated pure medicinal propolis honeys in the world, and it's from Stradbroke Island. Stradbroke honey has the lowest rating of chemical residues of any honey ever tested in Australia, simply because of where Straddy is.

     

    Pure as in from the hives, spun and warmed, not boiled (most are), and importantly, not cut (many are, Capalino is cut with Chinese honey, which is cut with glucose, yet they claim 100% Aus). The people, close friends, are setting up their website right now, was supposed to be done today.

    Firstly, great job Marty, although I didn't realise you were going straight to IFR flying, brave man.

     

    I first trained as an Apprentice Motorcycle Mechanic in the 70s, and when I took a 'slip in' carby off like yours, I would just grab it and a couple of wiggles later it was out without loosening the clamp. For racing we would always run tie wire from the carbs to holes in the cylinder fins as a safety backup.

  6. Every household has just been told to stay indoors, only 1 resident from each household can leave 1 time every 2 days to buy supplies. If you have to go to work, you need a letter from your company to leave you housing compound.

     

    Essential Gov services are one person per office, one day per week for each relevant employee.

     

    There's over 40,000 cases, and over a 1000 dead now (we know here that there are people unaccounted for), worst of all, WHO are reporting cases of people infected in other countries who have not been anywhere near China, Chinese or infected people, which would suggest air-borne.

     

    I seriously suggest you all start taking 500mgs Vitamin C and a teaspoon of propolis honey each day to strengthen your respiratory immune systems. I know you're a long way away, but the way this is going ... and it's already there. Hoping for Australia to find a vaccine sooner than later, the world leaders in vaccine development thanks to all Oz things that can kill you.

  7. Is there a record of these used in aircraft?

     

    Plenty, and it's growing. Go to the Facebook page I linked. People are starting to come together with mounts, filters, PSRUs (Mohawk and Trax at the moment) etc. won't be long before single point sales will be happening. As it is now, they are all very friendly and will all direct you to who's got what.

     

    Way, way overdue, real engines at proper prices are on their way.

     

    All the fruit costs around $5K USD, and engines with low hours can be had anywhere between 1 to 3K USD. Likely not many snowmobiles in Australia .... jet skis yes, but more work involved apparently.

     

    Steve Henry uses one, and has done for some time, very well known in the USA, and STOL comp winner at Oshkosh a few times with the Yamaha. He has a turbo on it now, but before when he won the comp, it was a standard 140hp (rev limited) spec. - funnily since fitting the turbo he has only come second!

    77kgs, 145 hp - like their motorcycles, the Japanese increase the power or lower the weigh year by year to have new sales claims, but regardless of year, they are all going to be somewhere around those figures.

    As you are in the same neck of the woods as Chongqing, I wonder if you know anything about GK (Gaokin) engines, 

     

    Also, any idea of freight costs from there to Brisbane ?

     

     

     

    I first went to Gaokin almost 10 years ago when they were setting up to assemble the 650cc single. I have been there again since. The engines are of AVL Austria design, they only assemble them, components are made somewhere else in China, and the components shared with a few other companies who do the same. They have a 80hp  1000cc VTwin also. Their engine sizes are of no interest to me for my projects. Have no idea of freight costs.

  9. What has been done in speedway for about 20 years is at the end of a race meeting the fuel taps are turned off, and a container of about half a litre of petrol is attached to the fuel lines. The engine is started and petrol runs through the lines, carbies and engines for a few minutes. This is the only reliable solution for when there's a couple of weeks between race meetings.

     

     

     

    I raced Classic Motorcycles for about 10 years, and used methanol. At first I would turn the fuel tap off, pull the line, get my little bottle of petrol/oil mix and run it through the carb till it almost stopped from being so much richer, 

     

    Over the years I got lazier and lazier, and sometimes would leave the bike as raced straight off the trailer into the shed, where it would sit up to around 2 to 3 months. The bike would start just fine, there was no gumming, the small amount of fuel in the tank never went off, the occasional re-ring showed no pitting or any of the oft stated downsides of methanol.

  10. It' been all over for LPG in the automotive industry from some years now; couldn't achieve the Emission Standard at the time (not sure which one, but I think Euro IV, so it's a non-starter for aircraft.

     

    Yaw not looking at it from the same direction as I am. 

     

    Science says it's the cleanest fuel available, and "When Greeny's Attack", that's a defense that will be needed. 

     

    It would hugely clean up the emissions of a Lyconti, Jabiru, ect, who's 1960's emissions are a long, long way from Euro 4.

     

    One litre of petrol produces 2.3 kg of CO when burnt, whereas the equivalent amount of autogas (1.33 litre due to lower density of autogas) produces only 1.5 * 1.33 = 2 kg of CO when burnt., CO emissions are 30% lower,, and NO by 50%.

     

    There is little choice if it goes down the road the OP is concerned about. I don't understand why some aren't on gas now.

Throw into the mix that the three biggest emitters ( USA, China and India) make more CO2 in a week than we make in a year and all their emissions are rising - and the elephant in the room that no one in Australia wants to mention is that there is nothing we can do to change anything - beyond hold the high moral ground

    YOU are the one that purchased YOUR keyboard, computer, shirts, pants, underwear, shoes, table, chair, the paint on your walls, the car you drive, the toilet you sit on, YOU. Nobody else, YOU.

     

    Where it is made, China, India, Tasmania, Mexico, or any other 3rd World Country, ... is completely irrelevant to the fact that YOU are consuming it, and YOU caused the emissions that went hand in hand with the production of the product.. 

     

    If YOU didn't purchase it, it wouldn't have been made, and no emissions would have been caused.

     

    Answer to OP:  Change over to LPG if the crunch comes.
