  1. Mmm bouncing on landing,,,I have NO trouble doing that all by myself :-) Actually with the 26 inch tyres it's almost impossible to do a bad three pointer, wheelers take a bit of finesse though, as the wheels touch you can't pitch forward cause all that rubber has to catch up, after the wheels are rolling the tail drops a bit and you can then pin it as per normal, the gear legs seem pretty nice ,a lot more damping than bungee gear. Yeh Alf, it the paying it back that's the thing, the guy who has the Eurofox has it on line but being a taildragger it's not getting the use that he needs for it to pay, Met
  2. the cost has to be relative to something though, $80 ph in the late eighties ,I was earning around $400-450 a week then ,compared to now,for me , flying cost less than then,,,although I had no teenagers sucking the account dry at that time either, costs for me now Eurofox $150 ph solo DH82a $375 ph solo C172 $185 solo $278 dual Tecnam P92 $140
  3. Hi , I'm thinking of rebuilding the landing gear in my Kitfox type with carbon fibre, I've got a bit of experience with fibre glass but was after info on what products to use, the process ,thickness's for given strengths, mounting arrangements, I'd be looking at the tailwheel spring first and if it works out I'll do the main gear as well Met
  4. I was chatting to a mate the other day(who is also a CFI) and he was saying that flying has never been cheaper , compared to when he was starting out I think he said the average wage( the real one, not the Gov crap) was about 2.5 time the cost of a duel lesson,,,,going by the cost your talking it would be probably around 3 times nowadays,,,some of the older pilots would have more accurate opinions I'd think, a big difference now is we spread our money over a huge amount of pursuits and gadgets Met
  5. I found that if I had a bit of a break, 8 weeks ,when I was a very low time ( sub100 ) my radio work seemed to suffer the most, it generally only took a couple of cct to get on top of it , so far for the last few years I think the longest spell has been about 5 weeks. I fly a lot of different types and it really does help with being able to adapt to a new aircraft easily ,at the moment I'm spending time between a Tigermoth and a Eurofox ,two more different behaving aircraft I can't think of but to help after the pre flight I spend time sitting in the cockpit mentally going through where everything is ,easier in the Moth as there's bugger all to do in em,and thinking about how the aircraft behaved the last time I flew it ,with the moth and the fox the props go opposite ways, this effects what it'll do when the tail comes up, what is the roll rate like, was it pitch sensitive, what is the view in the flare ( what view all the moth pilots say) the same thing with my AFR last week, i wanted to go into a couple of different airspaces and chose a 172 for it, I haven't been in one for a while but spent a bit of time thinking about how it was the last time leading up to the flight, by the time I was sitting in it with the engine warming it felt nice n comfy, also got to play with all the gadgets (ADF, VOR, two ,yes two radios) , but if I ever feel its not "right" I'll track down a FI for a lap. I also make a habit of asking any pilot I fly with to give an honest critique of my flying and where I could improve, its a good guage of where I'm at as a flyer Met
  6. Not me,,, some days I don't even brush my hair!!!
  7. yeh mate I spent a week stuck in Hervey bay with Grace and Ray a few weeks ago,,,good bloke,,,and like a little drink/laugh
  8. well bugger me (oops ,,,it's an Aussie saying ;-) ) there's a group for everything,,,except the "overweight, over hairy, over looked pilots association" perhaps I could start one ,,,good luck in Oz fellas and please don't take us to seriously :-)
  9. A mate of mine has done it in a C185 and a Cresco,, I think you might know him,,,Ray Curry?
  10. I was keen on a PA20 Pacer a few years ago that was rumoured to have flown under the Westgate bridge in melbourne, as for firsts I can't think of any that haven't been done before, but there is always the FIRST for me,,,I've always wanted to fly an open biplane from the US to OZ via Russia, then there's the London to Sydney race, not sure if it's still going but it would be a great trip, I'm also hoping to do the NZ crossing when the RV is done,,,so although I wont be setting world records I will be setting Matty records
  11. What's the record your trying to beat? How many landings are we talkin? Met
  12. Yarra valley flight training at coldstream use a 152 as well as a tecnam for RAA stuff, good guys and the taxi time is very short. Met
  13. Hi all, I've just bought a contour camera and am learning what works and how to use it, I have a few questions , How are people connecting it to their headsets, I have a David Clark 13.4 and would like to jhang it off the side if possible? How do I hook up the sound , I'm doing the test flights on my aircraft soon and want to be able talk through the flights , it has provision for a mike but if it could go through the intercom it would be neater, how do I go about hooking it up? Cheers Met
  14. Great vid mate, I got to take my dad on a trip to a little QLD town a couple years back, he lives in the USA so it was a real special thing they may not happen again ,I look forward to one of sons taking me "up" one day , Met
  15. Did a few laps in the eurofox this arvo, and the pump pressure is in the right range , I was just doing circuits so I didn't bother turning it off at, gotta say I cannot think of an aircraft I've flown that is more fun and more rewarding than the eurofox taildragger, if I could get the damn balance ball to sit anywhere near the middle I'd be 100% happy ,but I did a half a dozen circuits and tried a few different profiles, long flat final, flying up to the numbers and slipping off the height , big circuits ,real tight ones , an engine out from downwind, and mucked around keeping the tail up in a fast taxi, I've gotta say the little bugger makes me look good,,,,now where can I get my grubby mitts $95k Met
  16. The thing is I rarely post here anymore for just the above reason, Over and out
  17. Not sure Maj , I'll be taking it out next week and ill have a look, I do know I don't turn it off till I'm at height nowadays
  18. Well decision made, I'll be giving it a miss this year, I'll do the family thing instead, with all the crap that's gone down I just can't be bothered, maybe next year if things settle and we can get on with the fun part of what we're all doing,,,,,maybe start a new thread WHO'S GOING TO AUSFLY ,,,,I'm thinking about it, perhaps include it in a trip to Ayers Rock I've been planning
  19. I see a similar thing in the auto repair industry , if a customer finds a couple of faults ,even really minor ,they tend to look harder at the job and what was a minor issue can become a list. Maybe after a few issues( I've read the reports ) they arrived and saw no change ,looked harder, then again ,,,until !!! I can't see how anyone but RAA is to blame here,
  20. Looks nice, I reckon the hills either side of the strip would make it exciting with a stiff crosswind, Met
  21. I've had a Eurofox stop on me just after takeoff. The guys I rent it offhand in the ops to clean up around 500agl ,which is pretty standard in most things I've flown ,flaps, fuel pumps,CSU setup, so it seemed pretty standard in the Fox . At around 700agl ( I'd left it a bit later as the circuit was busy ,departing Natfly) I cleaned up the flaps, and switch the electric pump off,,,,,sh1t it started to sputter and stop,,,,after the a second of WTF I undid my last action and it came good,,,,I still did an emergency landing as I wasn't sure what had happened . On the ground I couldn't get it to do the same thing ,it seemed fine, after I shut down Mick Poole and another eurofox pilot came over and the first thing they said " you turned the elec pump off " , yeh since then the school has the pump on till established in cruise , and I've since flown it and watched the fuel pressure as you switch to mech pump, the needle hits the stop and bobs around there for a good 10-15 seconds before the mech pump gets going. The only thing I can think of ( and I'd be happy to hear otherwise) is the elec pump is forcing the fuel through faster than the mech pump, when you switch it off the mech pump cavitates for a while before it can get the pressure back up,,,,, Met
  22. I'd offer mate but we're about three hours away,,,,and I think I'll be camping down there anyway Cheers Mat
