    Radio noise

    Ian, do you have a transponder fitted as well? I have a Microair and the noise sounds similar, but it is there only if the transponder is turned on (and some days it is worse than others). Someone once suggested it is the proximity of the VHF to the transponder in the dash. Does anybody else with a factory 230 or similar have the same problem?? John

  3. My recent Class 1 medical cost me in excess of $330 including the donation to CASA to review it (and they are the ones who insist I have one). You can claim back nothing on Medicare. When the paranoid head medico in Canberra deems that your ECG is not perfect, you are up for specialist fees, stress tests, ultra-sounds etc. It is a VERY expensive exercise. John

  5. On the recorded ATIS (Terminal Information Service) at Townsville some years back, after giving the runway, wind, QNH etc, the conclusion ran as follows..."on first contact with Approach notify receipt of Information Alpha and say Happy Birthday Christine." And everybody did..

  8. I will be flying from Townsville to Bundy next month and somebody suggested I stop at Hedlow near Rocky to take a break, add fuel etc. I have not had much to do with this field, although I believe it is a good faciltiy. Can anybody enlighten me, please. John
  9. I figured this thread was SO appropriate because I have been having increasing trouble with cranking my J230 (approx 60 hours old). I did lots of trouble shooting and the idea that the Solenoid may have been at fault was attractive. I replace the solenoid and guess what!! No change. Everything pointed to the starter motor and this proved to be right. I fitted another one today under warantee and all is well. The starter is the last place I would have looked!!

    J230 Trim

    Brent, my concern is not running out of rear elevator, but rear elevator trim. I would simply like to be able to trim the aircraft in all configurations. I have a lot to consider from the suggestions the members have provided. Thanks.

    Thanks for the input, guys. Brent, if you change the spring to bias the trim in the forward direction, what effect does this have on back (up) trim??

    J230 Trim

    I have only had my factory-built J230D for about 45 hours. Has anybody experienced a lack of forward trim at cruise (75% power or more), especially with a lot of fuel and one POB, or a load in the back?? I am not sure how adjustable this is considering I need all the rear trim I can get in the landing configuration. The problem is not critical, but a bit annoying at times. I would be interested to hear how other J230's perform. John
  15. Whilst I'm comparatively a new kid on the block, I did notice with interest the debate some time ago about Oil Drain Valves. I Reckon the oil change on the Jab (I have a 230) is pretty messy, so I would be keen to hear of the current thinking about these little bits of kit. I notice that Shop has them for $55.00. Are they worth considering?? John
  16. For what is worth, I agree. I have found that the oil level is CRITICAL. For me today: 4500 ft: 18 deg OAT, 90 deg Oil Temp. The bottom mark seems to be ideal. John

    External Power

    Has anybody modified their Jab with an external power socket or similar device to facilitate jump starts?? My 230 is factory built and certified, so I am aware of the limitations to any mods. carried out. Perhaps someone has already looked in to it. I don't want to re-invent the wheel if I don't have to.   20. Glenn, did the removal of the gull wings have any impact on how the cylinder cooling ducts fitted. I am sitting at home and can't remember whether they actually sit onto the gull wings. Alan / Phil, what was the cost of the mod??

I am interested to know if any owners / operators of relatively new J230's have carried out the mods. outlined in the recent service letter, in partucular the fitting of an oil cooler duct and removal of gull wings. I would like to know if it made a lot of difference to temps. Was it worth the cost? Did the cowl neet to be modified a lot? I have not had a lot of problems, even though I operate in North Queensland, however the engine is new (35 hours) and I keep the oil level low as advised by the factory. John
  22. Hi all, I have been most interested in the discussions I have read, particularly in the Jabiru group. I became the proud owner of a J230 in October and its great to know there is a support group out there.
