  1. There are many stories of the ludicrous ineffectiveness of the card. One pair of aviators landed, taxied up to the terminal, parked and walked thru the gate to use the toilet. On returning, they were prevented from passing back thru the gate for lack of the little card. After remonstrating with the official to no effect, walked 100m to where the security fence ended, then back to their plane.

That is unbelievable, why do I hear Benny Hill music in my head..... insane.gif.b56be3c4390e84bce5e5e6bf4f69a458.gif

  2. I'm not sure if this counts as an orbit as the pilot did depart the circuit, but I was approaching the airfield and there was another RAAus aircraft in the circuit at the time. He departed downwind and orbited x miles west of the field and above circuit height to make way (voluntarily) for a RFDS PC12 on a straight in approach. He was very clear about what he was doing and was exactly where he said he was. I guess as long as you make clear radio calls it helps with the safety aspect. I'd like to know what the official procedure is though.

  3. I use the old David Clark H10 13.4 (passed down from my old man) and to be honest they are great, more than adequate but I'm also a gadget nerd and I've promised myself a pair of ANR's once I've done my cross country endo. ( figured best put the money towards training at this stage.) I tried the bose a20's, fantastic but I also tried the LightSpeed Zulu 2 ANR and they are much the same in terms of performance as far as I can tell, but way more comfortable than the Bose A20's on my big noggin'. So whatever you do be sure to try before you buy before you lay out that kind of money. Also I think these ANR headsets are handy if you're flying longer legs in a noisy environment (e.g commercial ops) and need to wear them for hours at a time.

  4. For something a little different I've known some guys who have gone to Botswana, namibia and Tanzania and spent a couple of years in the bush building hours, ferrying tourists to the various bush camps and doing scenic flights (c206, c208, c210) for me that would be a awesome experience. the kind of flying that would appeal to me. Not for everyone though. E.g. http://www.wilderness-air.com/employment.html

There is also a massive thread on Maun(Botswana) on the rotten plumb forum somewhere for more info.

  5. From the raaus website:

"The cover has an indemnity limit of up to $10,000,000 for liability arising from third party property damage or bodily injury including a sub-limit of up to $250,000 for liability arising from injuries to passengers (including student pilots). Depending on individual circumstances, you may require more than the limits described above, so you may need to maintain additional individual insurance."

  6. What size is a 1.20? a .61 used to be 10 cc. Is it 20 cc?... Messier make brake assemblies for large planes.

Yep you're correct 20 cc, or 1.20 cu inches. I bought it for a 1/6 (approx) scale spitfire mkVb ( 72 in wingspan) build in progress.

  7. Electric seems to be the way it's going these days. I've got a 1.20 Four stroke motor that I've converted to petrol instead of glow fuel, it's more to protect the fiberglass finish ( if I ever finish building the damn thing that is...) I like the sound of the motor but it's definitely messier than electric.
