  1. Well, when those agitating for the Unicom frequency for isolated and unknown airstrips everywhere get their way they'll all still have to use area to cancel their SAR arrangements, won't they?Kaz

    You'd be right there, so no change. How many pilot do you reckon arriving at this type of strip would have a formal sartime to cancel? I'd say most would have none and may just ring a mate and let them know they have arrived.

     

     

  2. I only give a call if I think there could be other traffic. I have very good vision from my plane, but if I was flying a Jab or Cessna I would be giving more calls, due to restricted vision. I have been in the circuit with another aircraft on the incorrect frequency, so the radio was of little use.Centre only talks to me when I contact them and that is usually when they are telling someone else of unidentified VFR traffic because they have seen my transponder. I usually identify myself and all is sweet. Unsurprisingly the pilot who insists on using the wrong frequency, also insists on flying with his transponder switched off. maybe he is worried about wearing it out.

    Yenn, you castigate others for not following the rule about which frequency to use but say you don't talk on that frequency unless you think there could be other traffic. Isn't the idea of radio to alert others to your presence, not only those you can see or think might be there? There is little point on being on the correct frequency if you don't use it. Could it be you don't want to clog up the area frequency?

  3. From the police statement below it appears it may not have taken off from the airstrip. Sounds like it never got into the air so must have taken off very close to the road.

     

    Duty Superintendent Robert Harrison said the ultra light plane was still on the ground when it flipped just after 3pm Tuesday.

     

    “It was attempting to take off on the grass area when a gust of wind hit it and it flipped over,” he said.

All jokes aside I feel that anyone who disregards the rules because they say they are foolish, is showing a complete lack of airmanship. that lowers them in my eyes and means they cannot be trusted to do the right thing in any situation.Non compliance with the rules can land you in trouble, even if it was just a simple mistake such as inadvertently programming in the incorrect frequency and I daresay most of us have done that at one time or another, but to blatantly disregard the rules is just not on.

    Yen, do you make your inbound, circuit and taxiing calls on area frequency and has centre ever said anything to you?

     

     

  5. My favourite hobby is on hold at present because I have a medical issue. Fortunately I have friends who can take me up in my plane regularly.I had surgery for bowel cancer in March and am now doing a 6 month course of chemo. Then there will be surgery (I hope) for reversal of a stoma. I know others on this forum have been down this road. How long should I expect to be grounded before I can satisfy the requirements for my Class 2 medical? Or should I be shopping for an RAA aircraft?

    I know someone who had bowel cancer cut out, did not need any chemo and had his class two back in about a year but needed annual medical for the next four years.

     

     

  6. Surprised if the spar was intact and not corroded if it did snap ... google "spitfire spar tubes" and take a look at what goes into each main spar flange. I've seen a new spar being built in the uk and that sucker ain't breaking with just the force from the weight of the plane in a low speed tip over.

    Looking at the video frame by frame you can see this is a bit more than a slow speed tip over. The engine producing lots of power and the prop hitting the ground forces the nose violently to the left as the nose hits the ground. This results in a lot of rotational force to the wing tip as the aircraft goes over. Lots of leverage there putting huge strain on the wing root area I would have thought.

  7. Firstly- before the jokes hit - not talking about your partnerSecondly - not taking about the types of aircraft that are dogs

    Thinking of taking my dog (husky) for a fly. Have ordered some ear protection for him.

     

    Have a full walking harness and will clip into seat belt to restrict movement.

     

    Have thought of doing a few taxi strip runs up to see the reaction etc.

     

    Anyone here have any experience with flying with there pet and how they got started and introduced the experience.

    Before you tell the world what you are going to do and certainly before you put anything on youtube be sure what you are doing is legal. The following Civil Aviation Regulation is pretty clear about animals on aircraft and I can find nowhere that says RAAus is exempt from this regulation but happy to be proven wrong.

    CIVIL AVIATION REGULATIONS 1988 - REG 256A

     

    Carriage of animals

     

    (1) Subject to subregulation (8), the operator of an aircraft may permit a live animal to be in the aircraft only if:

     

    (a) the animal is in a container and is carried in accordance with this regulation; or

     

    (b) the animal is carried with the written permission of CASA and in accordance with any conditions specified in the permission.

     

    Penalty: 25 penalty units.

     

    (1A) An offence against subregulation (1) is an offence of strict liability.

     

    Note: For strict liability , see section 6.1 of the Criminal Code .

     

    (2) Subregulation (1) does not apply to a dog accompanying a visually impaired or hearing impaired person as a guide or an assistant if the dog is:

     

    (a) carried in the passenger cabin of the aircraft; and

     

    (b) placed on a moisture-absorbent mat as near to the person as practicable; and

     

    © restrained in a way that will prevent the dog from moving from the mat.

  8. while on legalities .If I wanted to put my tools of trade into my RAA or GA experimental aeroplane , and fly out to old mate out back .

    Do some plastering and not deduct the cost of the flight for tax purposes , would this be legal?

     

    I believe that you cannot use the aircraft for reward , but can you use it to get you to a place where you get the "reward"

    Many people do this. It's still a private flight. Your business could own the aircraft and you could use it to fly as part of your work. There are plenty of farmers out there who own RAAus aircraft and it is just another piece of machinery as far as the taxman is concerned.

This sort of mindset (the RAA one) bothers me....if this had occurred in the same aircraft except GA registered (assuming that the pilot was correctly endorsed), what would they blame it on then?Assuming that aeros were being conducted at the time, the fact that it is illegal didn't actually cause this event, it's just an aside to it.

    No idea what happened in this incident. However, responding to the above post, when reading accident reports where pilot legality has been an issue you often read there is a pattern. One I recall included expired maintenance release, which did not cause the accident, hidden medical condition which did not cause the accident. The cause was a reckless take off rather than choose a better area. It seems if people are willing to break one rule they may be willing to break others.

  10. It appears to have been deleted out of the latest Aip, yet there is still a question on separation in the latest RAAus air legislation test.

    No problems having the question, if the correct answer is that you must remain clear of CTA or Restricted Airspace and that you must determine the boundary by ground reference and map, not primarily using GPS.

The reward thing is being deeply discussed on PPrune at the moment in regard to Wingly (ride sharing for pilots and passengers) the "problem" it seems in Australia is that CASA somewhere in their infinite wisdom have put a paragraph in the rules saying "cannot advertise the ride share or seat" which differs from the CAA and FAA

    The FAA says you cannot advertise cost share seats, just like CASA.

  12. I'm sure the king has all the necessary qualifications on his licence required to fly. I'd just prefer the copilot to not be part time, flying twice a month. He's the king, do you think the check ride guy might be under a bit of pressure to pass him? Could the cockpit authority gradient be a bit skewed with the king in the right seat?

     

     

  13. I always find this comment/statement some what of an oxymoron, we read/hear it a lot. "He died doing something he loved' Really? Does anyone want to die just cause you are doing something you love? I'd prefer to stay alive despite loving something (like flying!)It's such a silly statement!

    I love a good night's sleep. I suppose I have to die one day, so in my sleep would be one of the better ways. Of course no one wants to die, but it's a source of comfort to some people that the person one was doing what they loved and I for one wouldn't belittle that.

  14. Some one said he bought the plane to do aerobatics does anybody know if they are rated for that? Some one also said they saw a wing fall off. 19 rego is not aerobatic.

    There was one advertised recently that stated "aerobatic +4g/-4g". The 19 rego does not affect the aerobatic ability of the aircraft or pilot, just the legality.

  15. The RV is designed to be a tail dragger. Just look at a tail wheel RV next to nose wheel one! Ain't they pretty!

     

    The RV is a beautiful, relatively cheap aircraft. The nose wheel is not designed to handle the abuse handed out to Cessna 172s and Warriors by their pilots. Just go and watch them landing at your nearest airport. These aircraft can take the abuse and the pilot thinks he can fly because he hasn't broken the plane. If one of these pilots buys an RV he may buy a nose wheel one because he may not be good enough to fly tail wheel. The result is an increase in broken nose wheels. Well, that's my theory anyway!
