  1. You find it is the same requirement with the GFA, HGFA, and warbirds. Insurance is a big part of it. To convert, there is a 5 hour requirement. Before we argue if this is required or not, I have done a few with GA pilots converting, biggest issue is getting use to a lighter aircraft.

  2. Plenty simply swap out engine at low leakdowns rather than spend similar on repairs. Theres special deals for flight schools for regular exchanges.

Replacement engines come with lots of new and upgraded parts and supposably some warranty

Jabiru engines are far from perfect but very cheap to repair and replace, comparative to other types, so comparing to them isnt relevant.

This expectation of reaching 1000 hrs (time for top end) without work isnt realistic

Also a “top end” overhaul includes  almost everything other than case and crank

A way to look at the issue is “early” or found in maintenence repairs. The reason many are swapped out. Rarely reported id guess.

At our club, we have 2 x G3 engines coming up for 1000 TBO next year, both sitting around 900 hours. 1 has had nothing done to it besides normal servicing. The other one had an issue but was highly likely caused by someone not running the engine correctly. After some maintenance by our expert Lame, back online and will see out the 1000 hrs.

  3. Initial report indicated most in flight failures were in flying schools on 4 cyl

they must be maintained by L2

not much can be taken from these numbers, but the old story that theres no product problem and its all maintainers is pure manufacturer blame shifting

Think you will find the CASA report was highly inaccurate. If you applied the same logic across the entire aircraft fleet, alot of other manufactures engines should have been affected too.

I said, it it how they are maintained and run, nothing said about LAME's. There is different quality in LAME's as there is in owner maintainers. Yes I know of some specifics but a public forum is not the place for them.

  4. I am meeting a candidate this weekend, coming to our airfield to talk to people, and hopefully another one the following weekend at a fly-in. The cost question I will be putting to them, but also what their vision is to grow raaus and how they are going to do it.

  5. Hi All,

Wondering if anyone has been involved in setting up a ULP bower at an airfield. Besides the equipment, was there any regulation issues or issues with getting a bulk supplier to deliver fuel? Where I am, already have avgas, just looking into options as many flyers bring in fuel for the rotax powered aircraft.

Also heard the fuel excise may be able to be claimed back. ATO has an article on it, likely need to contact them though.

    Thanks All

  6. How about some congratulations for JG3 for heading back home rather than press on when a significant part of the flight preparation and plan went down the gurgler. Good decision JG:score 010:. Presson-itis has not gone well for a lot of people. There's always tomorrow to try again.080_plane.gif.a1e5e0a413d43d363c1bc5b3a612d6df.gif

Yes agree and well pointed out, congrats for making a good decision.
  7. Bit confused and trying to get my head around this - and maybe someone could confirm my understandings or set me straight. So lets say I built a Raspberry Pi ADS-B receiver (ADS-B in) and I plan to use Ozrunways on a 3G ipad mini in an aircraft.

    1. I need the Raspberri Pi 3 module - which includes the wifi module.

    2. I need a 1090 Mhz receiver and antenna suitable for aircraft (not one of the ground based monsters)

    3. I need a stable 5V (USB) power supply

    4. I don't need a GPS module as the iPad GPS knows my position.

    5. I need to install some software on the raspberry pi. (not sure what talks best with ozrunways??)

6.There is no point having the the dual band as Air Services don't intend to put in transmitters for the ground the based 978Mhz

    7. I will not get ADS-B weather as Air Services don't intend to put in transmitters for weather.

8 I cannot provide an ADS-B out to other aircraft location without a "real" transponder-squitter ($$+) [but is not required for VFR /class G/ RAA anyway]

    9. Oz runways will show Ozrunways traffic via the 3g iPad data as usual.

    10. ADS-B traffic will appear in ozrunways (similar to native ozrunwas traffic?) via Wifi from the Raspberry Pi.

    11. ADS-B traffic is (IFR, some GA VFR and new aircraft after 2014)

    12. non ADS-B Avplan traffic will not be visible

    13. non ADS-B map and compass traffic will not be viable.

    14. non ADS-B glider traffic will not be visible (Some vintage also)

    Comments/clarifications appreciated thanks!

My go at answering these!!1. I need the Raspberri Pi 3 module - which includes the wifi module. Correct (Someone on facebook was selling completed ones for around $240 last year, where I got mine)

    2. I need a 1090 Mhz receiver and antenna suitable for aircraft (not one of the ground based monsters) Correct

    3. I need a stable 5V (USB) power supply Correct , you can use a powerpack, in my aircraft I use the 12v power supply from the aux power (Cigarette lighter power)

    4. I don't need a GPS module as the iPad GPS knows my position. Correct, assuming you have the 3G version, just a wifi version does not have the GPS chip.

    5. I need to install some software on the raspberry pi. (not sure what talks best with ozrunways??) Correct, quire a few sites out there detailing how to do this. Or you buy one like I did

6.There is no point having the the dual band as Air Services don't intend to put in transmitters for the ground the based 978Mhz Correct

    7. I will not get ADS-B weather as Air Services don't intend to put in transmitters for weather. Correct

8 I cannot provide an ADS-B out to other aircraft location without a "real" transponder-squitter ($$+) [but is not required for VFR /class G/ RAA anyway] Correct, who knows what will come in future with low cost ADSB out solutions

    9. Oz runways will show Ozrunways traffic via the 3g iPad data as usual. Correct and ADSB, I pick up the Jets going overhead, interesting to see how fast they move!! Also picked up a few helicopters nearby too.

    10. ADS-B traffic will appear in ozrunways (similar to native ozrunwas traffic?) via Wifi from the Raspberry Pi. Correct

    11. ADS-B traffic is (IFR, some GA VFR and new aircraft after 2014) Anyone that has ADSB out fitted and it is turned on. Seen a RAAus aircraft with it too!! And ADSB is mot mandated for RAAus VFR, so may only have mode S

    12. non ADS-B Avplan traffic will not be visible Correct

    13. non ADS-B map and compass traffic will not be viable. Correct

    14. non ADS-B glider traffic will not be visible (Some vintage also) Correct , alot of gliders have flarms. Depending how old their flarm is, they may see you if you have Mode C / S or ADSB.

If you have more questions, keep asking, and start googling. If you are interested in who was building and selling them, let me know and I will see if I can dig it up.

  8. Unsurprising.Airservices Australia could possibly act as a neutral third party and integrate software paints from both OzRunways and AvPlan, returning combined traffic data to each app developer + ADSB data from their own Airservices servers & radar. No need for a Raspberry Pi receiver that way - and just one app, too!

Yes I know that's unlikely, but I'm an idealist, I suppose...

It would be great to see adsb through the EFB. (I have the adsb rasberry pi with ozrunways and works well). And I have heard it was the otherway, avplan not wanting to share with ozrunways!!!. Time will tell but hopefully sorted out one day.
  9. G'day Mike. First of all' date=' welcome to the forum and the world of aviation. Before you get ahead of yourself, take that TIF. Doesn't matter what type of aircraft, the smaller the better. Why? because it's not at all like flying in a commercial tin can and you might not like it, although I doubt it. Your nearest airfield for that would be Aldinga. Check out Adelaide Biplanes: Adelaide Biplanes - Home. Further afield is Murray Bridge which has 2 flight schools and a beautiful and safe training area.(whilst learning it's nice to have a load of flat paddocks to land in if an emergency happens). I can recommend www.rpa.net.au as I learnt there. Talk to James Hubbard, owner and CFI. Different schools offer different aircraft and of course, different prices. Do your research in that area. I'm guessing, but, say you're a slow learner, you will get your RAA certificate for about $10000. For GA license, it will cost almost double. I might be a bit out, but these days, it ain't cheap. Make sure you understand the differences between to two categories. Taking the cheaper option (RAA) first, and converting to GA later, as and when money is available is another option open to you.Which ever way you choose to go, enjoy, have fun, and stay safe.

    Doug

I learnt at Adelaide Soaring Club, great instructors and club atmosphere. Cost me around $3000 to get to certificate stage, and then around another $2000 for my Navs. Everyone is different. Lots of choice out there, yes take a TIF, maybe at a few places see what works for you. GA will cost at least double, maybe more depending how far you go.

  10. Awesome. Cheers for the info. So putting two and two together' date=' a rec license [b']with [/b]a nav endorsement will get me what I need. Do you head to my Barker because that keeps you out of controlled airspace? Would the Jabiru j200 aircraft be ok under the rec license?

J200 or 230 or j170 or many other aircraft, yes all good. With nav, I can fly most places. Just not into Adelaide airport or parafield. Rest I can outside controlled airspace. Issue you will have on KI is learning to fly. Your only option is to come to mainland. Depending how much $$ you have!! Shop around, worth going to a few places see what works for you. Main ones are at aldinga, goolwa, Murray bridge and gawler which I am part of. If you want to come out to gawler, let me know, I can show you around if I can be there at time. Depends on work and family (gawler is run my volunteer instructors as part of club)
  11. Hey scre80, cheers for your reply. I’m actually based on kangaroo island, so whatever I do, I’m going to have to travel. I do wish eventually to maybe cart 4 passengers but optimally just me and my partner to start. You referenced GA, in your post, what’s that? With recreational, there are restrictions like distance flown from airfield and so forth yeah?

There is restriction on either General Aviation (GA) or recreational aviation for distance until you have your navigation endorsement. Main difference is GA has ability to fly into controlled airspace, take more than 2 pax, fly heavier aircraft and aerobatics. I am a recreational pilot and have no issues going between KI and Gawler, just go to go via mt barker (Usually cheaper to learn than GA too)
  12. Log in - RAA - IntranetFive scholarship recipients were in attendance at the ceremony and were asked to speak to the room. RAAus president, Michael Monck also thanked the program's sponsors, particularly AirServices Australia who donate $25,000 each year.

Other sponsors this year included Dick Smith Foods, OzRunways, Aviation Advertiser, Brisbane Airport, Sport Pilot Magazine/ Stampils Publishing, Cre8ive, Hall and Co. and Michael Coates.

My understanding too was it was all donations and not from the membership or other fees. I am a recipient of the scholarship and very grateful. Thanks to all who donated. My last membership renewal I made sure I put back in what I could. Hopefully if others can afford to, it can go to worthy recipients.
  13. Hey All,First Post! I've gotten into a wormhole looking at Private Pilot's License Info and small planes, particularly the Jabiru class, and was wondering if there are any suggestions for good flight schools and anything that i should watch out for or things that might make obtaining a license easier. I super new at all this and will be having a few trial flights in May. Any suggesti

Where do you live and what do you want to do? If in Adelaide and out north, and you just want to fly for fun, look at the Adelaide Soaring Club at Gawler, way cheaper than parafield and run by a club. If you want to fly bigger aircraft and say 4 people at a time, you should look GA. But you can always start out recreational aviation and transfer over later.
