  2. The details that I had to provide for the authorisation were the aircraft details and hours (type, engine, prop), list of modifications (including photos), pages from the maintenance logbook covering the previous 3 years, compliance with CAO 100.5 for transponder (if required), copy of CASA licence proving CTA endorsement, CASA medical (if required), and finally the type of authorisation being requested (Flight over built-up area OCTA, Flight over built-up areas within class C or E, or Flight over built-up areas only within class D).My experience with CTA has been mixed, mostly positive with controllers responding regardless of aircraft type, while another just straight out denied clearance on the basis of being RAAus. After confirming that I did have all the authorisations to actually request the clearance in the first place, then the clearance as requested was granted. It might have only be an isolated case, however.

    Thanks for the insight.

  3. From the ops manual

    the pilot ensures their competency to operate the aeroplane type (refer to RAAP 1 – 2016 Type Transition Guidance) and holds all required Endorsements for the aeroplane and the intended flight (refer to Section 2.01 – Requirements).

    Link to the document is here: https://members.raa.asn.au/storage/raap-1.pdf

    Extract

    Pilots should make use of all available resources to ensure they are well prepared before flying an unfamiliar aircraft as pilot in command. Recommended actions include:

    • Read and understand the Pilots Operating Handbook for the aircraft;

    • Seek advice and assistance from experienced instructors or other pilots experienced with the type;

    • Ensure you understand how the aircraft differs from aircraft you have flown before;

    • Ensure you know how to use all the knobs, buttons, levers, dials, etc. before take off;

    • If necessary, have someone experienced with the type fly with you before you fly the aircraft as PIC.

    I have flown 3 different types of aircraft, each new one I had a CFI train and then sign me off in my log book.

  4. Getting back to topic, after some consideration it occurred to me that I probably don't need to wear the ASIC card whilst at Avalon as a display participant: I taxi to the tie-down area, and from then to the end of the show I'm in a "public viewing area"... when I leave, I do the opposite. My feet do not contact an "airside" area at all. My only two planned stops between Tassie and Avalon are Smithton and Torquay, neither of which require an ASIC.So I'll carry the letter from RAA and if I'm pulled up... I'm happy to make it a test case in the interests of common sense!

    Hi Zodiac, I have to ask, did you get the card in the end?

  5. scre80You are so lucky over at Gawler

    The RAAF here own the airspace from surface to 45000 ft for 20nm then from between 4500 to 45000 ft from 20nm out to 50nm and we don't have one thing based here that fires a shot, CT4's, PC9's and Kingair 350's, we do get the occasional F18 and C17's as well as the other VIP jets on rare occasions, we do have a bombing range inside the 20 mile but haven't had the windows rattle for over 10 years

    The RAAF won't stop us flying if they are active as they have asked us to call them up for a clearance, the RAA is what stops me when the RAAF are active as we are not allowed to fly in controlled airspace ( but East Sale is classed as restricted airspace so it could be a grey area)

    I just don't fly because I'm concerned more about if I put down for some reason my insurance might not cover me if I'm flying out when they are active

    We still have all them fly in and out, mostly the P8 and PC3 plus c17. But they let us have the airspace which is great. I think only 3 times in the past 10 years I hear have they activated from sfc up. We are respectful not to breach airspace, if you have a look at Gawler, you can see how tight we have it, especially on RWY 13 / 31

  6. Howdy Capt WallyMost of my flying is on the weekends anyway an the rumour is they won't be activating weekends, same as it is now

    I still manage 100hrs a year with the airspace active during the week

    I think I know the property you were thinking of buying with the strip on it as I've flown over it many times

    It's about 3 kms north of Seaspray off the Seaspray - Sale road

    I fly from Gawler inside Edinburgh airspace. They have 3 restricted zones above us, but usually only activate 1 so we get 4500 agl, and only once a week they activate down to 2500. Airfield has a good relationship with the RAAF and gliding operations (Usually get a release to 8500ft). As for cost of hanger, ranges depending on owner but I hear somewhere around $100 to $150 mth but there is airfield rules around what can be kept onsite.

  7. I take your point and agree largely. It just narks me a bit.There is a Windows product called AirNav. Has anyone had experience with this product? Sorry if this is off topic. Maybe I should have started a new thread? I am very willing to be guided on this? I'm new here!

    Understand how it would nark you. I use to have a windows phone many years ago, gave it up due to not being able to get the apps I wanted and functionality. But I am happy with my Nexus 5x.

    Is the one below the one you are referring to?

    Sentient Software | AirNAV VFR best moving map and flight planner in Australia

    If so, looking at the ipad app and the text quoted on the website, not sure if they have been kept up to day. Has a 30 day trial so no harm to give it a go. But you will find most use either 1 of the 2 popular EFB's. I personally use OzRunways and find it really good on the iPad.

  8. So you're quite happy being locked into the g*%$le hegemony then? I'd trust either of the others way ahead of them... Just my biased opinion :-).

    I use an iPad, but have an android phone for backup, and use windows pc at home. So not locked in and keep myself device agnostic as much as possible. Just limiting yourself to windows devices, you will be waiting a long time and being locked to a certain platform. But if you need one now, look at all the options and make an appropriate call. I suggested android as it is cheaper than an ipad.

  9. Yep I have a Surface Pro and a Windows 950XL phone... I know the phones are not widespread but it's by far the best phone I have used or helped others use IMHO (I do a fair bit of seniors IT support)... If an App runs on Windows 10 it will run on Windows 10 phones!

    Think you will be out of luck there!!. Not many people would want that and a surface pro is too big for the cockpit. (Plus much more expensive) You can get an andriod tablet with 4G for not too much, may be worth the investment otherwise you will be waiting for many many years. There is emulators by the way to run andriod apps on windows 10, but you may luck out with functionality (ie GPD)

  10. I did the RAA survey. Unfortunately it wouldn't allow Mr FV to do his on our laptop, because it will only allow one response. Will be finding an alternative so he can have his say, which is different to mine in some respects. At least RAA is consulting members. I found rating 1 to 8 What is Important ... the hardest one.

    Agree with the rating being difficult!! Took me a few goes.

  11. This survey is window dressing - much like the road show visits they are conducting. They are pushing their (and CASA's) views and don't appear to be listening to what's being said to them.The current hierarchy of RAA have their own agenda and are steadfastly implementing it regardless of rank and file opinions. I have taken the opportunity of filling out the survey but there is no where to expand (save a couple of words) on thoughts of what the board should be pursuing for members. Much like saying 800 votes to change the constitution was an overwhelming vote of confidence in the board. Members organisation my ****!!. Biggest con job ever. I wouldn't trust the two Mikes as far as I could kick them.

    Can you please go into detail on this? many comments on here have been on a personal nature but not providing any backup evidence or information. I am quite new to RAAus, with no personal bias but would be good to hear any evidence of this.

  12. Yep! definitely a lot easier with two or more people.If I remember correctly it took me (& my son) several goes to get it right. I think the first attempt(s) were a little to influenced by GA "swinging the compass" technique.

    Unless later models have changed, the Ultra required "zeroing" on each of the 4 cardinal points with the aircraft at or near, level flight attitude.

    I established my AH level flight attitude first - then calibrated my compass well away from any ferrous structures and with all my electrical systems turned on.

    In the end we did the unmanly thing and followed the instructions to the letter. Got the desired result.

    Good Luck!

    Thanks for that. We followed the instructions but seems it did not take. Further reading says it can take a few goes. SO back to the airfield for another go. Also out of interest, did you purchase an updated POI database? or do you use the HSI?

  13. I have had the Ultra EFIS in my aircraft for about two years now - no real problems. Some of the function displays are a bit small, for my aging eyesight, to be really useful.It would be great if the AH could be calibrated in the air, when level flight has been established.

    I found the calibration of compass (4 points rather than two) at flight attitude to be a pain the the proverbial. Much jacking and swearing.

    Well I went to calibrate the compass, it said it passed but it seems not as it is still saying COG. Did you have to do it a few times and any advice? Figured already it is a 2 person job.
