Im researching a new prop - again
Im mainly looking for cruise speed, J200/400 mostly fly well below 600kgs,
Im leaning towards 2 blade sensinich - glass coated, 60 x ??
Opinions on 2 vs 3 blades, and experiences?

E10 = basic ULP with 10% ethanol

Simple clarification please
Ok, I may be missing something here but, OK I go the PPL with CTA endorsement, Can an average 19 regd Jab get to access CTA? What gear does it need and what needs to be TSO'd?
JR

Flight Cell in NZ used make the FlightCell "to go", they lost money on them so stopped. There are still some in shops and they are great.
There is also a similar one which is bluetooth which would be easier to use BUT the main feature of any of the flightcell gear is the supurb noise filtering. On mine callers have no idea you arent in the office. I run music through mine too from the phone.
They do a larger one too and still make them, but much dearer, it can handle multiple inputs at once. Military use them apparantly.
You will need sometimes special adapter to link with smartphones like Nokia E51/6120.

Maybe a dopey question but, for CTA do you need TSO alt and transp, calibrated, or can you calibrate and test non TSO stuff?

Not so sure, every so often I do a landing which really should qualify as two!

Not really but isnt it frustrating to hear people stating they saw, heard etc the moment when CASA boss decided we were not responsible enough because a few people did the wrong thing?
These events happened nearly 3 months ago. As someone already said by publicly ignoring it we condone it to new members/ learners and it may be considered OK
I guess these were just rumours at the time, eventually supported as possible fact. Hindsights a great thing.
Ive been involved in industries which were self regulated, over time it was percieved the industry wasnt being tough enough on itself, govt regulations came into effect. These are more expensive, much harder, more senseless and you have less input.
We cant (for long) have the good stuff with self reg without being ahead of the fun wreckers.
-
OK, I reckon it needs to be seen clearly to complete outsiders and GA generally that its CASA choosing not to act rather than RAA

Brent thats good really, part of my point is they (RAA) should be letting people know this is going on. That way those inside CASA and out can see that it is doing a good job of the whole self regulation thing.
RAA should also publicly comment on significant problems and state actions taken
Yeah logbooks is a problem, there probably should be some scritiny of logbooks/ maintainence logs. Someone is supposed to look at logbook at a BFR dont they?
If we had to submit a simple AC inspection report every few years, L1/L2 which included maint log then no one can say we arent doing anything
Otherwise at some point someone will say" they cant manage it themselves so lets implement a strategy we know works" - LAME Annual inspections.
We have to remain AHEAD of the game with regulation/radios/ELT/etc etc , and do it our way otherwise we will end up doing this stuff someone elses

Well shouldnt it have been easy then?Good question Jim and I'm surprised nobody else mentioned it. Gyro's are operated under ARSA, not RA-Aus so they weren't under their juristiction at the event other than the fact that they had a stand there. The flights were probably best described as 'marketing' dogfights."RAA would like to state the unauthorized flying display presented at ???? was carried out by non RAA aircraft, therefore has no ability to take action, we however condemn the participants and thier show of poor airmanship"
Its critical we take responsibility for members and take action when required. We are "Self regulated" remember. If we can dodge a bullet we should. By doing nothing we accept the criticisim as being fact.
RAA needs to strengthen and professionalise its public relations. Possibly make more statements on whats its position is on some issues, especially concerning "regulation". They need to be SEEN to act.
It needs to be clear who RAA is representing and who we are not.
As a body grows, it gains strength but also attention. This attention can help or hurt the body depending how it is managed.
Many of the issues we debate on here are really RAA vs public opinion. Bodies like CASA often reflect public opinion, rightly or wrongly.
The EPIRB debate was possibly seen as something we couldnt oppose. The public are sick of footing the bill to find and pick up people doing stupid things. Yes guys many think of us flying (very) small planes as stupid.
-
-
I know of a successful one with a Comanche.
Effectively the guys own shares in a company which owns the plane and incurrs all the costs, (except fuel I think) they then rent the plane by the hour from the company. They set the rates as they go and keep a reserve for big bills - which they have plenty of
Nice plane though
Covers the split up of bills vs hours used, and facilitates external hire too

Yep this is plus freight - they charge plenty for this, Id guess ~ $40 USHi GuysFYI Spruce have these detectors for $US129:95 each.MODEL 300 POCKET CO from Aircraft Spruce
Perhaps Ian can get a good price through his contacts which should save on freight costs.
Mark
If I can get up to 10, it should be below $120 US - landed Australia
I already plan on talking to Ian to raise order number - keep in mind Ian has to make money on his, unfortunately Im not.

Dont get crossed up with certified and TSO'd
Neither would be TSO'd, but you dont neded that in RAA
In a factory built 24 registered the manufacturer has to certify the modification
If Jab say No them thats it.
Mine is 19 reg so can pretty much do what you like.

Install of a Dynon (or any other) EMS is a lot of work
I spent around $2500 plus heaps of my time to upgrade a panel including a D180
Keep in mind an avionics guy will charge somewhere like $80+ per hour
Id guess it could cost $5K for the entire job, but its a guess.
Dynon support is a strange one, I think Jabiru buy from US anyway so not sure how much support they offer ex Bundaburg, Dynon support even ex USA is very good. They have a great forum and they answer usually the same day.
Not that much goes wrong once they are setup and running
I did an full panel upgrade, and it found would be easier to start again. Id reckon others have had customs panels built, so maybe Jabiru are prepared to help. You could have someone else build a panel complete with your gear, and have it installed up there. Jab might be happy to do engine stuff for you.
(You dont have to have analog at all if you want saving more $$$
For my 2 cents worth, go with a D100 on L, D120 on R, normal instrument stack in centre, inc Garmin 396 in proper mount, icom or Garmin radio, leave room for or fit Garmin transponder. Fit a row of lights for engine backup - low oil pressure, high oil temp, charge, fuel pressure etc along the top
This will all fit in small panel. Large panel I find cramps the legs a fair bit if you are tall.)
Id have thought Jabiru would be very helpfull if you are buying a plane from them ask them?

This is the one I found,
Gives a reading of CO, very small (67x35x15) 28g, battery operated, and does the calcs for time vs dose ie, 400ppm for 10 min may not be as bad as 120ppm for 1 hr
Has alarms for this too
Sensor is replacable, as is battery, 2 yr warranty
Im getting a few so far. Price is down to $150 USD - if I get to 10 price drops alot maybe to $100 USD

Im looking at getting a small electronic CO detector - It is small enough to go on a keyring, batteries last up to 2 years, has loud alarm and flashing light, alarm goes off at different levels of CO, calculates culmulative exposure too, Auto off after 12 hrs.
They do under read a bit at 10000ft, but this shouldnt be an issue for most.
Cost $179 USD delivered each, or I can get them for ~ $140 USD if I order 10x
Anyone interested
I can send data sheets etc.
Cheers

Ive got a 3300 with Jab prop which seems to have ongoing issues with prop track.
Very sensitive to wind both in flight and on ground
If theres a X wind it can vibrate just like its out but later on in the flight, smooth as can be
Its actually the second new prop its had since I bought it and tracking always needs adjustment. First one had 1 tip about 7mm out from the other in relation to the hub, after short argument Jab replaced it.
I realise this is different to balance but Im reaching the conclusion the prop is varying as it is used or due to climatic changes
Anyone else see this trouble?

Yeah the foot thing - Im tall and find my right foot needs a stretch fairly often
I have had a bit of success in that my foot is just wide enuff to put it in the middle of the pedals, a bit of boot on each , and this negates the unintented rudder and gives one foot a rest.
With AP I would have thought this could will be worse - no where to put your feet and you would be fighting AP?
Re CO detectors, Im looking into getting one at the moment, found a small pocket one, around $190, trying to get them cheaper, Ill let you know what I find out

If you want to protect your freedoms then maybe you have to stay ahead of changes and not let the regulators do it for you as they will implement harder and more rigid rules.
If Someone else decides we will have mandated radio then maybe it will be TSO, annually checked radio,
If we had them already it wouldnt draw much attention

Both have audio out, I have a VXA300 and its very loud, even has a feature for PA setup using ext mic. You wont need an external speaker Id think.
VXA 200 is very similar just doesnt have Nav features, and a bit harder to control squelch if I remember correctly - more keystrokes needed. Its a bit smaller too
VXA 710?? I think recieves other bands ie UHF also, someone said it was a bit complicated to use and its a fair bit dearer
Look at them Vertex Standard Australia
Ian has Vertex at the best price I found and has been good with support

All electrical connectors to do with Airbags are also yellow!!!!Yep thats why they paint yellow the things under the hood you can touch, usually only the dipstick, water bottle and trans fluid these days and everything else needs a degree in computer technology hahaJR
