  1. Thanks Wilbourne for the info. I am not sure I want to go that far but I will look into. I have a little tail dragger time - just enough to know how little I know. I love grass strips - easy on the plane and pilot, and what I learned on originally. Do you know anything about the FK9? I have seen pictures but never seen one in person.

    Gday Geoff,

It's heartening to hear all the helpful response on this forum to your query.

As you know, we've been in contact for some time, and I encouraged you to come to Caloundra for your holiday.... At that time there were two Recreational flying schools at Caloundra, but I regret that both have now gone, one to Tasmania and the other has just disappeared without notice.....

I'll pick you up in Caloundra and fly you to both Caboolture and Gympie, and a few other airstrips as well, and have a look at the islands and hinterland. Looking forward to it.

  2. This manufacturer of floats in Czechoslovakia sent me the following email, seeking a representative in Aus. I pass it on in case anyone else would be interested.

I am producer of aluminium floats for ultralight and LSA. I would like ask you if it could be interesting for you (or for somebody from your friends) to cooperate with me as my dealer for QLD? Please, see my web site and let me know.

  3. Having just landed with flat nose wheel in my Jabiru and subsequent spat damage (lucky that was it)I had the pleasure of installing new tube - all went OK until came to reinflating - for such a small tyre its alot of work. Im using the nice pump from Ians store but still wore out my arms and that of another person before it was up properly, recoil on the pump isnt working very well anymore.

What are the real dangers carrying the CO2 type with small bottles?

The pressurized aerosol can type inflators are the way to go for travelling around. They're instant, and seal the leak at the same time, so you can fly on to destination. When you get to a convenient place to do a proper service, throw the tube away. I always carry a spare tube cause you can't always find those sizes when you want.

  4. JG, Have we got Mt Coolan yet. About 2/3 the way between Clermont Qld when heading North to Charters Towers. Airstrip with great pub, within easy walk and pub food and accomodation. A bit west of the Clermont-Charters Towers highway but a good option to know about if the weather should turn bad on that route. On that note most of the cattle stations in the area would have a place to land if you needed it , but you'd be assured of a beer at the Mt Coolan pub. My co-ords taken from GEarth are as follows....S21.23.28.71.......E144.20.49.51..........................................................Maj...024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif

Now marked on the map. Looks like a real good spot, on a route with not many alternatives. Thanks.

  5. Charters Towers couple of ks to caravan parks few more ks to town very friendly place and historic also offerd a use of a car here.Longreach say no more, short walk to caravan parks and a little further to town great pubs and cold beer.

Im off to Charlieville this weekend to the pub also looks good not far to town.

Ravenswood, Charters Towers, Longreach and Charleville added. More like 2km walk for Charters Towers, but worth it.

Charleville is a fair walk, about 3km to the RSL, which is the closest bar and best food value. Cosmos Celestial Observatory next to the airfield. Slabs of concrete all over the bush, remains of the American airbase from WW2.

  6. JG..please post a caution note on this listing. This strip has the potential to be very character-building, if winds are high (above 15 kts) with lots of severe, (and I do mean severe!) turbulance and sink, because of sourrounding hills and terrain, and lots of islands off the coast upwind. It was very windy this week, and even the Caravans and Beavers were grounded some days. This is not a strip for the inexperienced or fainthearted !!..That said, a great place when things are nice, which is most of the time, and I certainly wouldn't want to turn you off the place at all..Generally I'll depart in the Lightwing in most winds, but there are days when I go elsewhere for landing...and I've been in there probabily 100 times or more. As an example, it is possible to see each windsock at either end of the strip indicating high opposite-direction winds on the real bad days!!....The Beaver bar is quite capable of mixing a good stiff drink however. Good luck..............................Maj...024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif

  7. We have forgotten about the best one yet!!! Shute Harbour... Wave Airpark and the Beaver Bar... Only problem is the 100 hour minimum PIC requirement but if you meet that very well worth the visit... There is the FlameTree Caravan Park 200 meters walk away so you have food, accommodation and a great little bitumen airstrip... and the added bonus of a good chance of meeting the Major while there.

Shute Harbour now on the map.

  8. Emu Park - OK, I think that's what I've marked on the map. The strip actually runs N/S and is at right angles to the road to Rocky. There's houses all along the east side, and self-storage sheds to the west.

Taroom - OK, I've found that one, and it's now on the map.

Wandoan - Yeh, I found it pretty much the same as you did. Flying a 50kt ultralight with a 447. Had landed on the main Taroom field late on a Saturday afternoon hoping to find glider fliers for a ride to town, but deserted.... Next morning early (Sunday), got out on the highway with a jerry can, but no traffic.... So headed on south with remaining fuel, and faith...... Found Wandoan with welcome relief just where I really needed it.

Don't know what took us so long to do it !

Yes, I've been wanting this info for a long time. Maybe this will now be it.

And yes, it needs constant updating. I can open it up to anyone to edit, but have a feeling that could get out of hand. I'm willing to maintain it and add airstrips and modify it as info comes to hand.

Hopefully Ian can put it on it's own button, like those for Classifieds, Photo Competition, etc.

Then anyone can post corrections and new strips on here and I'll add them to the map.

  9. This is the state of the map at present

    Pubs and Food Map

For those who are unfamiliar with manipulating Google Maps, here are some tips:

    - Move around the map by click and drag.

    - Click on 'Satellite' or 'Map' in the upper right corner to switch between map and satellite view.

    - Zoom in our out with the +- scale on the left side, or with the thumb wheel on the mouse.

    - Zoom right in close in 'Satellite' view to have a good look at the strip and surrounds.

  10. Wandoan, south central Qld, Small rural country town with well place airstrip immediatly North of town. Grass strip is long and wide, fenced and well maintained. Watch the high tower just to the west of the strip, and a possible hazard if landing from the west whilst on final. Short walk to town for shops, food or fuel from servo.

That's a good one, thanks, added to the map. I'd forgotten about that one. Landed there many years ago when I found it chance..

  11. Emu Park, Central Qld. Small coastal beach town with well kept grass strip about 1 klm from superb beachs on the beautifull Capricorn coast. Caravan park close by right on beach and local pub all easily accessable from strip. On the coast East of Rockhampton and South of the larger coastal town of Yeppoon. (Where's yeppoon you ask ???....right next to your knife and fork !).

Taroom, south Central Qld. Small friendly prosperous country town with all facilities and great pubs. Large main airport is some distance South of town, however large well kept grass strip just north of town with a comfortable walk to town.

Emu Park - I've marked what might be the strip, but it's not clear. Please check to see if it's correct. If so, that's a really valuable strip, cause there's not much choice in that area since Hedlow closed.

Taroom - Can you describe the location of that strip north of town?? I can't find it on the satellite view..

  12. Orchid Beach on Fraser Island. It's a grass strip about 650m long, right by a servo and coffee place/little shop called The Trading Post. You pay a $20 landing fee to them.

It's right by the sea. Fly at legal hight up the East coast of Fraser and as you get to the top, it's there on your left.

Great for a picnic, and there is accomodation nearby.

Good one, it's on the map now.

  13. Mallacoota Inlet just South of the NSW/Vic border. Great people magnificent scenery and Gabo Is just off the coast. You can ring for a taxi from the airfield into town - a bit further than walking distance for most. Fabulous new runway long wide and sealed - it is of course in ERSA.

Yeh, it's a brilliant place, see photo. Cliffs and caves across the road. Great little seaside town.

Way to far to walk to town, but a good visit if you're willing pay taxiis......

  14. Another great strip is at Loam Reastaurant on the Balarine Peninsula near Queenscliffe at Philip Myer's property. Just got nominated for best new restaurant. Very Degustation style Menu, where you have to look for the food on the plate...but worthy of a stop anyday.

I just marked it on the map. Please check to see if I've found the proper strip.

  15. This one is a gold resort... A group of Ra-Aus pilots will be staying at the resort next month and one of the couples is flying in to the "International Airport" in a Savanah S...------> http://www.lagunawhitsundays.info/

I have stayed at the Resort before and its bizarre... A luxury resort in the middle of no-where with a great BIG airstrip next to it...

I am not sure if any other Ra-Aus aircraft have flown here much before but I reckon it is a great place for a weekend stay by aircraft...

Just added this one to the map.

I've started a new category of 'Fly-In Resorts', designated by purple markers.

  16. Also the Golf Club is at the southern end of the airport, great lunches! Probably a 10 minute walk from the airport gate to the club. (And all Circuits are to the East, over the water.) Also the airport has some small facilities where you can get a pie and a cuppa. (As with most airports) and Generally you do need an ASIC.Highly Recommended (And dont be afraid to drop into Moruya either while your in the area). 014_spot_on.gif.1f3bdf64e5eb969e67a583c9d350cd1f.gif

Yeh, I know Merimbula. It's a beautiful place! Camped there for a couple of days while northern NSW was being flooded in '09. Normally wouldn't be allowed to camp on the airfieldfield, but friendly manager obliged. About 2 km to town, but a very pleasant walk. Didn't know about the Golf Club, but that sounds good. Definitely need ASIC card there! The only place I've had someone examine it closely (twice) to see that it was current. Security is a big deal there, with electric fence and infrared light beams!

I'll add it to the map right now, thanks for the reminder.

Moruya is more like 4km to town, so a bit much of a walk.
