  1. Hey Burbles,

I also have a MTOW of 120kg and have a rag and tube aircraft,( MTOW 490kg). Runs a 582 and has no problems lifting me and doing navs (Goulburn to Inverell and return, Leongatha to Goulburn etc). The lighter aircraft will handle you just as well. I have also taken passengers with not much change in performance (but only up to MTOW 490kg.)

    Cheers

  2. I have problems with birds in the hanger I rent in Goulburn. I just cover the plane in old bed sheets and wash them every so often to get rid of the bird crap. There is a product called "hotfoot" that some factories use to put along the tops of beams etc that the birds hate. I have used silastic along the tops of beams in the hanger with some success.

  3. I dont think the actual fibreglass mat or fabric is the problem, the resin used to manufacture the tanks etc is the problem. I have recently made additions to my fibreglass tanks and have been careful to research the problem. The problem appears to be in the polyester resin some companies use. The underground fuel tanks and the new tanks are made using vinylester resin which I believe is very chemical resistant. (so say the experts). I have been told that id your tank has been laid up using vinyl ester resin then it should be ok to use for ethanol based fuels.

  4. If you fly to Armidale in the states north, the elevation of the airport is 3550'. The 1500' overfly will put you above 5000'. I regularly fly over 5000' above highland tiger country to be able to glide to safety. I do have a radio so I don't, in these circumstances, see it as an issue.

  5. Can anyone tell me of the tip position of the thermocouple in the exhaust maifold of a 582 rotax will have an effect on the egt reading. ie. If it is to close to the side wall of the manifold will the temperature be lower than if it is in the centre of the exhaust chanel. (the distance of the thermocouple from the piston is as per factory spec).

I haved had a long history of low egt readings (850 to 900 degrees). The motor does run well I recently flew another aircraft (618 rotax) and the egts were 1100 to 1150 degrees as specified

    Thanks

  6. Thanks fellas. I will keep on keeping on. David, I can relate to the citabria incident, had one like it today. Should be stopping at Warnervale in the Xair when I go up to the Glouster flyin later this year. May be catch up with you and the Xair owners Warwich and Sheree that I met at Temora.

The instructor today talked about getting out the dancing shoes when doing the 3 pointers, I now see what he means!!!

  7. I am doing the endorsement in Daves Flying School's 912 lightwing. Apart from the tail wheel, the other differences I have to get used to are: Central stick (right hand) as opposed to left hand between the knees stick and left hand dash throttle as opposed to right hand stick throttle. Great to fly another type of aircraft but these narrow cabins get real friendly at times. The instructor, John was great and very relaxed (he needed to be).

At least the landings have to improve after today. Can you recommend a good book about tail wheel landings.

    Cheers

  8. Started my tail wheel endorsement at the oaks today. Thsi endorsement really shows what you don't know. We are spoilt with the tricycle undercarriages!

I have to admit that the 1.5 hrs today were ok but trhe landings were embarrasing to say the least. I hope they will improve.

    Cheers
