Was great to see some members of this forum at the BBQ (and almost at the BBQ) on Saturday. Great to meet Flighty Girl, Ultralights and Wannabiggaplane and check their aircraft out. That Savannah is a beautiful aircraft, and the titan Tornado is a mean looking single seater. I was very pleased to see the guys from the gyro copter hanger turn up and the people from the flying school as well as club members. We are imposing on the good graces of Teraya untill things get moving. Next month promises to be better and bigger so lets book the space - FIRST SATURDAY OF THE MONTH at the Goulburn flying school hanger about 12.00. Eat, talk and check out aircraft, sounds good to me. See you then and thanks for those great people that turned up last saturday.
Till then

Hi Steve,
The Crookwell airstrip is grass and in fairly good condition. It is about 3km out of town and undulating. If you carry a bisysle you should do it fine. The hanger shown on the airstrip is an old open front one thast is used by one of the local crop dusters at times. (I think the council own it?). If you check Google earth, you will see another airstrip on the town side of the long council one. That is a private strip.
The local frequency is 126.7. (general agreement).
I often fly into there and enjoy the sunshine and peace and quiet (inside of the eyelids) for hals an hour or so then fly back to Goulburn (YGLB) which is 25nm to the south.
Cheers

Darky, flew into and out of Lilydale on tuesday this week. Make sure the bag has room for some water wings. Not often you see a lake instead of one of the runways at an airport. Pity you didn't have a float plane at the feild, you could have done that endorsement!!!

Thanks Guys and Gals, look forward to seeing you there. Whewn we put the list together of the upcoming events etc, I will publish it so watch this space.
Cheers and thanks

There was a lot of talk about using a small suzuki car engine as an aero engine but it seemed to have died down.

Hi All,
Been a while but the monthly Southern Highlands Aero Club BBQ is on the 7th August 2010. The club has been very quiet for a while now and we are thinking that this would be a good time to crank it up and keep it up. We have had a lot of toing and froing re the future of the airport in Goulburn but so far nothing (3 years now) So bugger it, lets move on and enjoy ourselves.
Gold coin donation for sausages, buns, etc and good hanger talk.
Fly in or drive in.
See you there

The 750 hrs I mentioned above consists mainly of the hours that were on the engine before I bought it as a second hand runner from Randal Crowley. The engine performed beautifully whist in the Xair.

I hope they weren't going to replace the 582 after just 300 hrs. With a top end overhaul (read decoke and rings) then the beast should last for a long time yet ais you treat it properly.
I have just changed my 582 after 750 hrs and then only because I needed to do some long trips and wanted the reliability. The old one is sitting there as a spare. The new one cost about $7000. If you are getting rid of the old one at 300 hrs then you should have at least half of the new one paid for by the resale price.
I agree, the cost of a second car is about right.

Given the style of system the 582 has, and the short time of use, I would reuse them. If you tension the manifold bolts down correctly, there shouldn't be any problem.
However, if there is any damage (cracks, holes, stiffening) of the gaskets then get new ones.
Just my opinion,

Hi Fella's,
I have owned an Xair std for 3 years now. I assembled it myself and have found that if you do the work yourself then the costs are no more than a second family car. If you do the recommended maintanence, change the plugs and oils when re3commended and keep the filters etc up to date then the outlay for maintanence will be very low. Because it is Registered as an ultralight then you can do your own maintanence.
I have put 160 hrs on mine now and appreciate the hell out of it. No fast but lots of fun.
Cheers

Well done, a great achievement. The first of many I hope.

What sort of camera mount did you use and where did you mount it?

It would be great if Canberra got a 2nd airport, but I can't help wondering why Goulburn airport hasn't been considered for purchase by the ACT people. Freehold land, room for expansion and only 50 mins from the centre of Canberra. Our air port is in a state of stasis with our local council and this would help to maintain a regional airfield as well as saving the people of the ACT a large amount of dollars.

Thats interesting, I share a hanger with a tricycle Vision that was made here in Oz at Orange.

In the latter case I use "joining long downwind" - lets em know I am on line for the downwind leg.

Great, the info sessions are in Canberra and Sydney, what about the aviators who live in other areas within 100nm. They had better publish it as a notam because a lot of people will not realise otherwise. I notice the attachment says conditions apply, what are they? Does anyone know? I was planning a cross country trip at Queens birthday weekend from Goulburn to Holbrook!!!!

The 582 used to come without the thermostat. It was listed as an optional extra. Good tip about the Kawasaki thermostat. (rotax one is $120 or thereabouts from Floods! How much for the kawasaki one?)

John, when I was in Armidale earlier this year, I used Mogas from the service station at the airport. Inverell had shell avgas available from an agent at the airport during business hours.
I have been using the shell card at Wollongong but dont know if they have converted.

I received a letter today to say that shell are assuming control directly of all their Carnet cards as of 1st June this year. I rang shell to find out about getting one direct from them and was told that the minimum requirement for a shell carnet would be a fuel consumption of 10,000 litres a year. (The Xair would have to do a lot of hours to use that much in a year!!) However, I was also told that they havew converted all their 24hr avgas pumps to take credit cards as well.

Pud, make sure you can switch the clock off or else it will drain your battery when in the hanger. Otherwise, looks great.

I have an Xair standard. Cruise 55 - 60 knots. Fixed Rudder trim tab can be set so you dont have to be on the rudder all the time. They are not a fast machine but handle very well and are very forgiving to fly. Large cab and comfortable seats. If you have the time, they can go anywhere. I recently flew Goulburn to Inverell. Flying time 6.5 hrs with a couple of refuelling stops.
Cheers
