I believe one of the current prerequisites if you have to fly above 5000 ft for any reason is you must have a vhf radio on board. I have flown above 5000' regularly but thewn in this area we have 3000 plus ft lumpy bits and when flying over tiger country at that level you need 2000ft plus under you to glide clear if the fan stops. When I flew to armidale recently, the airfield is 3600 ft amsl so 1500 ft agl puts you over 5000' any way.
Just my thoughts

Bought an icom A4 out of the states recently. Great radio, works a treat, using it as a backup for my in plane radio. Frequencies correct.

Had mine in the cockpit of the Xair exposed to bright light for 6 hrs (Goulburn to Inverell), I had sunglasses on and had no problems. Flew from Inverell to Armidale today, still no problems. I am converted. Now I have to find out where to get a good dash mount bracket from (?Slarti)

If the capos could be obtained without the button on the top it would be more comfortable with headsets.

Hi all,
I have an Xair std. with 582 rotax. C Box and brolga prop. I fly out of Goulburn in Southern NSW. Built the Xair about 3 years ago. Have 155 hrs on it and loved every moment I spend in it. I am looking for options of installing, or carrying, more fuel for x country work. (any ideas?) Neil, in the new year, or early in 2010 I will be doing a long flight from Goulburn to Armidale and Inverell to visit family. They may not be the fastest thing in the air but the fun value makes up for it.

Caltex premium no problem. I test the fuel I get every month or so with the water in the jar test. (I know I should do it a lot more frequently). No ethanol to date. You can also look at the interface of the petrol and water and some of the additives in the fuel will show up as a layer between the water and fuel or a discolouration in the interface.

It is on the top of the Cullerin range about 15km north of Gunning. There are 15 windmills

Thanks for the advice guys. This site is a great resource. The carbs are balanced using a home made manometer (cost $3.00) so that part is cool. I moved the prop around one bolt hole and surprise, surprise, the damned thing seems to be now going great. The problem seems to have been (just guessing here) an alignment of the cylinders at TDC and one of the blades. I offset the blades and that seems to have done it. The harmonic now seems to be about 4800 to 5000 and not as strong so that is not a problem. I can live with that.
Again thanks to Mark and the rest of you for your advice.

Can anyone help me. I am running a new blue head rotax 582 with a c box (3:1) and a brolga 68inch 3 blade prop. The engine goes well but develops a bad harmonic vibration and noise between 5600 and 5900 rpm. The cruise range I prefer for this engine is 5500 to 5800 rpm. The motor I used to have was a 582 grey head with the same box and prop with no problems in this rev range.
Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

I am flying and have my little beast. I consider that a win in anyone's language. I did not have to fork out a mortgage to get a "licence" and can fly for the cost of a second car, Another win. I can maintain my aircraft and not pay a fortune to a LAME every 100 hrs, I've won again win. Works for me!!!!!!!

Just tried the program. Brilliant. Just what you would expect from a fellow kiwi. On my most valuable tool list. Well done!!!

I am in the process of replacing a grey head motor at the moment. It has 652 hrs on it. The motor is still going well but I need the mental comfort of as new one as I have some long trips planned. The motor has performed beautifully since I have had it with the only problems being of my own making. If they are fed properly they will last as well as any other motor of their type. I have replaced it with another 582 (new blue head).
My old grey motor already has another prospective home.

I'll be driving there on the Saturday. Would have flown but I will be in the middle of giving the beast a rotax heart transplant.

Silly question, but is the pitot opening facing into wind (thr pitot hasn't moved has it). Also check and see if the air hole in the front of the pitot hasn't been knocked and squashed a little.
