  1. Just telephoned RaaUs and been advised that Steve Bell is no longer with RaaUs so I asked if he had moved to CASA but admin did not know.Alan.

Probably would not say even if they did due to the privacy laws!

This is the sort of thing that should be posted on the web site to stop rumours.

Does there have to be an acting Tech Manager appointed to allow RAAus to continue operating under the CASA "Instrument" authorising RAAus Operations?

    Cheers

  2. All of the above is correct the builder can still carry out the maintance on that aircraft if you are the new owner. BUT if something went wrong he could be liable, All builders that I know including myself that have sold VH Experimental Built aircraft wont continue to do the maintance for that aircraft. The MPC course that the SAAA have only covers CASA regulation & paperwork you dont learn how to do tappet reseting or compression checks.

XAIRTVW. This is correct however, when talking with CASA a while back, they said that when they issued the new "instrument" last year it was intended that when an aircraft was sold by the builder then the builder was not to do maintenance (issue a maintenance release) on that aircraft and all maintenance would be carried out by a LAME so we may see a change in the future. I understand that any LAME can do the work and he/she does not have to be operating under a maintenance AOC.

  3. Was it Auckland that had an underground power line short out and exploded some time back? Took ages to repair it and they had the CBD getting there power from ships in the habour for around a year.

Yes Ozzie, it was Auckland. The cable was not able to supply the "current" demand. I think there was some power supplied from a ships gen but not for very long. A new cable was run into the city alongside a rail line in super quick time.

    Cheers

  4. I have an annual done on my experimental registered aircraft every year. This is carried out by a LAME. A new Maintenance release is placed in the flight manual. This allows the aircraft to fly again for another 12 months or 100 hours which ever comes first and subject to any other conditions that may be required e.g. daily preflight. A copy may go to CASA but I don't pay a fee to the LAME for it if it does. Provided the maintenance release is all in order then there should be no problem (aircraft wise) if a CASA ramp inspection was to take place.

Can someone advise what paperwork is required to be sent in with the registration fee to re register an RAA aircraft?

It has been a while since I owned a RAA aircraft (Jabiru). If I remember correctly an annual had to be carried out and an entry made in the Maintenance Log. This Log was not tied in with the annual registration of the aircraft in any way from memory. Other than a registration card displayed on the aircraft what else actually states that that aircraft is fit to fly should a RAA or CASA deligate take a look at the paperwork? There might be a simple answer.

  5. This is true, I've been looking through it this afternoon, and can only find reference to 'two seats' etc...So who knows the actual answer from a legal point of view?! ah_oh.gif.cb6948bbe4a506008010cb63d6bb3c47.gif

Very interesting IF this is in fact the case Tomo.

We will await a ruling from RAA headquarters. Might take a while though!

If this guy is in fact legal I bet we will see a rule change probably quicker than updating the register.

    Cheers Mike

  6. The aircraft register on the RAA website is a year out of date. Recently this has led to the mistaken belief that an aircraft involved in the Brandy Creek accident had a cancelled registration when it had actually returned to the register a few months ago. The media could get the wrong impression and cause undue hardship to family & friends. So what is the problem with updating the register on the web site on a regular basis?

The CASA register lists a lot more detail about the aircraft and owner - should RAA's register do the same or is there already too much information for your liking?

    Sue

Sue, if the register was up to date with every new registration issue (with as much detail as is currently published) and aircraft remained registered until cancelled by the owner then we would not have this current issue of expired registrations on a register that can't be kept up to date for what ever reason!

    Cheers Mike

  7. I can't see a problem with publishing the Rego, Type and status... But I still cringe at the fact that anyone can see a picture of an aeroplane and in 30 seconds know the registered owner and there whereabouts such as on the CASA website...

Don, I dont have any problem with having my aircraft ownership available. It is no different to NZ, USA Canada or a lot of other places. What I do disagree with is that because the RAA list is so secret that those who should be paying landing fees to keep aerodromes open often grizzle about continual aerodrome closures. I know of plenty of aircraft RAA up here (YPKU) not getting billed whereas I always pay my $22.00 landing fee here and else where.

    Cheers Mike.

  8. Why do RAAus aircraft have Registration renewals annually with a fee - eg-$130 per year for a two seater aircraft. When VH registered aircraft do not pay a annual rego fee?

Very good point Dazza. I have often wondered that myself. Once an aircraft is registered VH there is nothing more to pay until change of ownership etc. What do RAA actually do with respect to any registration paperwork. They certainly don't up date the register once payment is received!

    Cheers

  9. Make sure the neighbours are ok with it, explain the situation, explain its not going to be noisy, that the circuit pattern will be over your property as much as possible and away from houses; offer them a flight a couple times a year, a bottle or 3 of wine each xmas and all will be well on that front (hopefully)... I dont believe youd need to contact the council about any approvals unless you actually intend to build something like a hangar... (machinery shed on the farm? no worries)... If its dirt or grass strip, you haven't technically built anything...I havent done anything like it yet, but its on the cards for maybe 40 years in the future...

Hi ignition, we have a block just out of Bundaberg Qld and plan to put in a grass strip. Hangar will also be a farm shed!

The block is scrubby regrowth and we have council approval to re clear but intend to just clear a strip we call a fire break.

  10. With the (published) register 12 months out of date, we can't be sure that the aircraft has not been re registered in the meantime. I emailed the RAA CEO and Office a month or two back re out of date info (register amongst other things) on the web site and have YET to receive a REPLY. It's making the new RPL look better.

  11. If ATSB declines to investigate, it is passed to the police and although an RAAus Investigator may do the work his report is handed to the police and then on to the Coroner. It is the Coroner who releases the report, and yes I know this can take years and is unsatisfactory. I personally would like to see our investigators working under ATSB control and supervision. We could do the work and hand the report to ATSB and they could release a prelim. like they do now. But we can only lobby and hope.

    Cheers

    John McK

We need to lobby harder John to get reports out (even if preliminary) as soon as possible after an accident / incident. As TP stated in post 9 "shortly after landing the aircraft veered to the right, hit a ditch and went arx up" Was the aircraft landing with a tail wind, too fast, lost directional control etc etc?

  12. ABC is reporting that:-- Pilot was unlicensed, Student license had expired

    - Aircraft was unregistered, registration expired.

    - Pilot faces a custodial sentence

So.......we go from Bizarre to worse

As I said in Post 116 above. All did not look well re the registration (or lack of). Another GOOD reason to have up to date Rego info on the RA AUS website.

This can not be too hard to do I am sure. Even if the list was updated once a week would be better than once a year!

  13. What would be a better outcome is for the RAA board members to realise they are missing out on a golden opportunity to educate members each time there is an incident, and to seek Government direction in each State and Territory for Police to be instructed to hand over a copy of each investigation to RAA.

Couldn't agree more Turbo. I have been pushing this one for along time. It was good to see that ATSB got involoved in the Old Bar indicent and look at the discussion that has created in these forums.

  14. TurboBased on what we've seen there is little to suggest that he should ever fly again.......but all that sits on the back of everything we've seen being everything there is to see. For example, the aircraft is clearly RAA licensed in the video (actually in thinking about that, that isnt even clear, rego might not be current...it could be even worse than it already looks ah_oh.gif.cb6948bbe4a506008010cb63d6bb3c47.gif) .....whose to say the pilot is RAA licensed? Do any of us know that to be fact? After all 100% of RAA pilots <> 100% of all those who know how to fly in Australia.

    Andy

From the photos, the rego looks like 10-312. A post above suggested it was 10-302. A quick check of the RAAus Register does not show 10-312 exists. The register however, has not been updated since 31st Jan 2011. This is another area that could be kept up to date. It can't be too difficuilt to have the Register "live".

  15. Well it certainly looks like one wing tip hit harder than the other based on the condition of the starboard vs port wings in the ABC photo. RAA registered so "Loops" will be a feature of the ATSB's questions I would think...That and "how are you supposed to glide to land from 2ft? blink.gif.7ee21b69ed31ab2b1903acc52ec4cc3f.gif

I wonder IF there will be public / government pressure to have the ATSB look at this one??

    Probably not.

    Cheers

  16. In any case, will it really be cheap to fly? Cheaper than what? Still uses the same fuel and oil, 100 hrlys still cost the same, insurance on a $70k aircraft is still going to be hefty...perhaps $4000 pa as a guess for private use. happy days,

Insurance may not be quite that steep Poteroo. We pay $2,500 for $130,000 cover on our RV9A. This is in a group sceem mind. As you say other costs will be (and are) similar.

    Cheers

  17. And had the ATSB not investigated this one then I guess we would not of been discussing the poor aviation engineering practices of the aircraft in involved amongst other things in the other thread. I can't help but think that this was brought on by CASA to show RA Aus they are looking for short falls in it's practices followed shortly after by an Audit. I have no beef with either CASA or RA Aus as I hold both a CPL and RA Aus Certificate.

    Cheers

  18. Nobody disagrees with your sentiments . the difficulty is that ATSB don't usually do any investigations of RAAus incidents. The police, and the coroner are in charge of ours , so there are restraints on what can be printed/ discussed., till the investigation/inquest is finalised. Nev

Thanks Nev, but why the interest in this accident (Non fatal) that the ATSB were involved??

    Cheers
