"Wing Loss Possible In RV Crash
A Van’s RV-7 that crashed on New Year’s Day in Northland New Zealand, killing both occupants, has caught the attention of the RV community because of the possibility of structural failure. If the investigation confirms the witness accounts, it will be the second suspected fatal in-flight breakup of an RV-7 this year. A similar aircraft crashed in Arizona in June and local reports suggest that plane came apart. The New Zealand builder/pilot Dean Voelkerling was an experienced and respected EMS helicopter pilot and was well-known in the local aviation community.
Local media reported eyewitness of a wing “spiraling” down separate from the stricken aircraft, which crashed into a field. While it is common for early eyewitness accounts to be inaccurate, video and still pictures released from the scene also appear to show the absence of the aircraft’s right wing. This tragedy will surely be watched closely by enthusiasts and authorities alike as the investigation unfolds, especially as it comes on the heels of a fatal accident of the same RV-7 model this past June in Arizona, which also presented early indications of an in-flight structural failure. More information will follow as the investigation continues."

This is an Aircraft Wrap supplier.
Just one of a number of companies supplying this type of product.

I am advised that the Accident RV7 had been covered in a shrink wrap type coating instead of being painted. I had not heard of this technique but is supposed to be popular??
Appears this shrink wrap may have lifted and caused a control surface flutter leading to the inflight breakup?

I am advised by a NZ mate that the glider is the Morgan Cheyenne. Not sure if it was Gary flying it. He has set up business in Blenheim. Is it definite that it was the Morgan Cheyenne? - it certainly looks like it, but further comment should not be made until there is positive identification.- 1

Sounds like costs at those aerodromes will go up. Whoever leases the aerodromes will want a return. Hangar ground lease ok by me. Landing fees most probably? Seems the Councils are all going this way now.TWO of the region's rural airstrips will be leased to private contractors and hobbyists as part of a new plan from the Toowoomba Regional Council. The lease development plans for the Pittsworth and Millmerran aerodrome landing areas were passed by the council at the committee meetings yesterday, following constant inquiries from landholders about the availability of the land.In his submissions to the council, aerodrome operations manager Barry Wicks said the lease development plans were essential to ensure land allocation was optimal.
"Due to the limited land remaining available for lease development at each aerodrome without substantial investment, it was considered desirable to prepare lease development plans to ensure that further leases would be optimally located given the constraints of each site, aviation safety requirements, and the potential future aviation needs and activities at each aerodrome," he said.
Both airstrips are currently used by agricultural sprayers, the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and the Royal Flying Doctor Service on occasion.
Infrastructure services general manager Mike Brady said Pittsworth's airstrip was of particular interest for several potential tenants, but both sites were seen as essential
"At Pittsworth, we've had a few enquiries there over the past year or two, maybe about half a dozen," he said.
"It's just trying to formalise it so we did the lease locations where they build their infrastructure.
"Those sites can start as hard-stand areas, like gravel or grass, (but) in years to come, if it gets a lot of use, we'll look at getting it sealed."
Infrastructure chair Cr Carol Taylor said that tenants would need to build their own sheds to house aircraft.
"It's all there so that people know exactly what's expected and where they can go," she said.
The TRC will call for expressions of interest early next year, including what operators would want to pay in lease rates.

It isn't CASA who make these rules. It's the Office of Transport Security who make the rules and are responsible for enforcing the ASIC/MSIC etc. Best to direct concerns to the relevant Minister. That's all well and good Skippy but if I am going to be using places such as Dubbo I am not going to open myself up to huge fines it just isn't worth it.I would love to see a big boycot on asic's but knowing casa it wouldn't surprise me if their reply would be to just start policing it a lot harder and proscecute to the full extent available to them and I for one am not going to be the scapegoat to try and beat the system.Casa under the regulations do require a security check (AVID) for all flight crew licence holders each 5 years as mentioned in a previous post.

Did my Renewal Application via The CASA web site yesterday. $256 from memory. Now need Birth Cert etc for application and a face to face with original docs before ASIC is handed over. I still wonder why an ASIC is required outside the "Ramp" areas of a security controlled aerodrome??

CASA talks about the Commercial Road Medical but have not said how (or if) it will be modified along the lines of the RAMPC with extra (Aviation) boxes to tick. I am at a loss to understand why they are calling the medical a "Basic Class 2". Give it a new number/name at least in my opinion. I believe they intend to charge the fee hence not just changing the privilages/validity of the RAMPC.
-
I havn't seen anywhere that CASA wont be charging a fee to process. I know they dont charge for the RAMPC. Like a previous poster said, the detail will tell all.
On another note: most DAME will do an ECG whether it is required or not for over 60 when doing a class 2 exam based on my expreience just for their piece of mind I believe.

Col Jones started a thread on this subject (Basic Class Two medical announced). Mods, can the threads please be combined?

RAAus advises that the missing wing has been found. Will be interesting to find out where the wing failed.
I wonder if this wing was the latest version "S" mod?

Oscar. The aircraft was not owned by Ian. The owner does alot of flying hence hours flown since overhaul.I note that the engine had been 'rebuilt' some 400 hours before the accident. AFAIK, Ian Bent owned that aircraft until at least just prior to the demise of CAMit, which was in what - October, 2016? Yet, the engine was 'rebuilt' by the pilot and a friend. The accident happened some 9-10 months at best later; to have racked-up over 400 hours in that time is a remarkable achievement for anything but a FTF aircraft.- 1

I received the following from my Insurance Broker a few days ago:
The aviation insurance landscape in Australia has changed in recent months, this includes major insurer, Allianz, withdrawing from the Australian aviation market from January 1st this year and AIG announcing in May that they are withdrawing from our aviation market effective immediately. The other major insurer, Swiss Re are showing a reluctance to insure lower valued GA aircraft. Over the past 5 years GA premiums in Australia have reduced and are the lowest we have experienced in the past 25 years. Insurers are telling us that this has put them in a loss making position and premiums at these levels are unsustainable and a major factor in Allianz’s and AIG’s decision to leave our market. The Australian Aviation Insurance market has reduced from four major insurers to two in the past five months and a swing to increase the premium pool is inevitable.
The above was written by my Broker and included with my Insurance renewal for our RV9A.
Premiums have indeed reduced over the previous few years however, are now on the way up again. We were lucky in that the premium has only increased by $67.00 for the next twelve months. I note that Allianz have withdrawn from the Aus market. I believe RAAus have some Insurance with Allianz along with QBE? WILL it be too much longer before we are told by RAAus that they are to drop the Insurance cover for members due cost or availability???
