1. Yes it does happen to all of them.   The way they share information with their paying customers and the availability of alternatives is the difference between the good and the bad ones.  You should know that Ian.  You do get what you pay for but sadly the tardy sharing of information part...that doesn't cost any extra and is just a sign of inexperienced or inadequate ground handling.

  2. I just love seeing those hatches on your Ninja Mike.   That really makes it perfect.   Do you have a hanger at Palmyra these days?  I gave up the full size flying and don't have any plans to get back in to it at least any time soon but would love to visit and have a look at your machine with my RC glider flying buddy Steve.  He's a pom and only flown in a jumbo to come to Australia.

  3. This blaming GA pilots for the troubles of RAAus is not going to do anything to help. I came from GA, but I also stayed in GA and now I fly both. The problems here are that a lot of people seem to want to live in the past and not allow others to fly more modern types of plane. RAAus and its predecessor AUF both allowed GA type planes onto the register, in fact one of the previous staff of RAAus allowed aircraft on to the register that shouldn't have been allowed. The board stood by not realising what was happening, but CASA was not impressed. That was when the board was composed of members, representing the states. If we want change we will have to influence the board members and now is a great time to do it, as there is a call for nominations. A great chance for you to make a change for the better?

We can sit back and grumble to each other on this forum, or we can try to change things, by stirring the pot.

I remember being totally and absolutely mind blown when looking at a Sonerai 2 in what must have been the early 90s and being told it was an "Ultralight".   It was too late then.   Of course the pilot was an Ultralight pilot and according to the GA pilots who knew him was too scared to fly the damn thing so just tinkered with it.  I never saw it fly.

  4. I suspect that's not true; the people who created the RAA boom, which occurred as GA was dying, to to let's say 8000, and they haven't gone away, it's just that in social media only a very few surface to defend what they built, and a few others, who went from GA to RAA still trying to do the same type of flying they used to do, also regularly post their opinions. That's not a measure of where the critical mass is. In fact there is a picture, right or wrong, emerging of pilots who fly in GA until they are no longer medically fit to fly,  then get into RA using the driver's licence parachute, and sooner or later there's going to be a come to Jesus moment where someone in Government says to CASA "What have you done!" you can already see the wriggle room changes starting to adversely affect RA flying. When black and white starts to become grey, things can go either way.

The RAA boom was a new GA boom.  The real boom was pre RAA.   It's too late.  Most of you never got involved with any intention of flying anything that didn't at least resemble a Cessna.

  5. The poor dude has already been ripped off by one experimental aircraft engine manufacturer... he doesn't need to be an engine test bed pilot again.   Come on guys!!!

UL Power make a few engines that weigh less than the O-320 for about the same horsepower, an option if you can afford a new enginehttp://ulpower.com/en/engines

Or alot closer to home...... https://m.facebook.com/RotaxPerformance/Victoria based I believe....

I've actually looked over a few gyro's fitted with these engines. Very impressive engineering and finish.....

  6. And the Catalinas, Hudson’s and Beaufighters, and even the Boomerangs and Wirraways, shockingly under-armed as they were.

    kaz

Agreed....but the short and brutal part played by the 75th RAAF and their P-40s in a short period in the initial battle for New Guinea should be a much bigger story than ANZAC because that is where Australians on their own and despite the colonial masters took their stand and drew a line in the sand in defence of Australia.

  7. I guess that depends on if you watched Saturday Matinees on TV as a kid with lots of P51 Mustangs, or sat in Cinimas and got Pathe news shorts. Mustangs, with teeth of course, are the iconic WW2 planes to me, while not my favorite.

That ain't a Mustang with teeth.  They are P-40s.  Australia owes so much to so few of these aircraft and their pilots for stemming the Japanese flooding into New Guinea.

  8. And equally we could say if the old tube and rag people wanted to fly they should have gone and got a licence and flown GA Experimental. Or later, if you want to fly over 300 feet or over the road, get a licence and fly GA Experimental...ad infinitum .. where do we stop?

But they didn't...because GA was cost and regulation prohibitive.   So they created the AUF.

  9. The “Be careful what you ask for. You might just get it!” mantra came in to play years before there was even such an aircraft as a Jabiru 430.   Sorry to have to point this out.

In fact I would put in at about the time that Jabiru was looking for a replacement for their KFM engine...Skyfox Aviation was producing beautiful classic Ultralights...Hughes Engineering was producing an amazing ultralight called the Lightwing...and there was still a good possibility of the continued viability of Drifter and Thruster factories in Australia.   Anyone who wanted to fly anything more should have nicked off over to GA where they belonged instead of asking for more and more and trying to steal the grey hair too old or too lazy to get a medical GA market.  My firm opinion.   And some people (newbies often) still have the cheek or ignorance to come on here and claim they want to learn to fly "Ultralights"!!!????    Get yourself a bloody RV if that is the way you want to fly!

  10. This is beginning to take on the mantra “Be careful what you ask for. You might just get it!”Anyone who thinks CASA will give RAA anything without extracting a pound of flesh is living in LaLa Land and we are now seeing the outcome. You might get a few kilos but it will almost certainly be at more expense than you gain.

The same to be said for CTA access - if you ever get it, it will be at the cost of loss of freedom from medicals, loss of freedom to do self maintenance and at increased cost.

There will be a lot of people in GA world sitting back saying “serves you right. You should have quit while you were ahead. “

  11. 750 kg MTOW would allow Cessna 150,152  Piper tomahawke  Beech skipper and others to flock to RAA maybe. So you would have one fleet maintained by amatures no disrespect intended,  and the other controlled by casa.

Five years down the track when neither group has fallen from the sky ? COULD WE BE LIKE CANADA ?

You already have Cessna 150s (including at least one aerobat) registered with Ra-Aus.

  12. I'm hearing from all sorts of alarmist sources that anything from 25% to 50% of the Australian Great Barrier reef (GBR) has been destroyed by global warming. Apparently it is all bleached..046_fear.gif.a169be01f41641777ca18d12572cbf94.gifI've flown up the coast over the GBR at low level many times over the last quarter century or so and never seen any coral bleaching. I'm wondering if somebody has seen this 'bleaching' and can give me some GPS co-ordinates so I can go and have a look-see ?

    .

    On yer bike Mr Ashby.

  13. There's still a heap, keen to get out there and do shite, challenge themselves and have an adventure. Part of the problem is, there's no real awareness provided to the wider community on what aviation in Australia has to offer. - They don't know the benefits to communities it can bring, - The multiple facets that make up the world of aviation (it stretches across everything from small model kits, R.C. models, UAV's, full-size ultralight, light, heavy, fast, slow, rocketry, space vehicles, etc), - The potentials for innovation in engineering, technology, business, etc. that apply to more than just aviation, - They don't realise/know that Australian's have played pioneering roles in aviation, helping bring many positives to across the world, and have done/achieved things even Hollywood hasn't thought of. An example of this would be, most people crossing the Sidney Cotton bridge near Proserpine, NQ wouldn't know who he is.We don't hear more of our everyday aviation heroes and characters. Maybe there's no real aviators anymore, no one inspiring, no visionaries, no leaders. Maybe they are just pilots and some self-glorified machinery operators.

We are handicapped by the current Mob steering the ship, that appear to lack navigation skills and common sense, risking putting us onto the rocks, but they can be trained and guided. Worst case, we channel Somali Pirates and bring them back to the heading that's needed for Aviation and its communities to prosper and grow in Australia.

My apologies if the above doesn't make any sense, and could be way off track. Had a bit of a "Sanate" earlier (still need to Google it), and haven't had a coffee this morning. Cheers

I agree 100%. There is nothing wrong with the youngsters. Sadly on top of what you are saying is the fact that if they do rock up the attitudes shown by many of the older generation is not something that would encourage young people to stick around. There is a lot of homophobia and similar attitudes that young people for the most part just don't want to be around.
