  1. I was at Wanaka and saw the aftermath, not the actual collision, but.....

I saw the approach and landing of both Yak 3s and they did break formation and come in one behind the other but slightly apart so as to use all the grass runway width and leave room for each other.

My immediate reaction after seeing the results (5 minutes after the event) was to ask the question "Who parked a bloody cherry picker on the edge of the runway?"

I can understand the need for good video of the comings and goings, but shirley someone would have seen the possibility of the danger that this presented

My second thought was about a Ferris wheel in Australia

    Cheers

  2. Congratulations Dave,

    Welcome to the club

Only those that look to the sky and wish they were up there can ever know the real freedom of flight

Now the bad news....you still have a heap to learn, so happy learning and enjoy yourself

    Cheers

  3. I used to be an aviation radio apprentice with AWA at Essendon in the mid sixties. I would hitch a ride in the jump seat of a Brain and Brown DC3 across to Launceston on a Friday night and catch the POT back on Sunday night

It cost me a slab of beer for the ride in the jump seat but I got to fly the plane once we were out over the water

    Good times.....

  4. so what was it like?

    A dream come true

It is noisy and rattles, but when that Merlin is run up on takeoff, you know you are in for a treat

I got to fly it as it is a dual control and it is as sensitive and smooth as everyone says

Flew along the thames valley and then back to Biggin Hill doing three victory rolls on the way

The whole flight from closing of cockpit canopy to leaving the aircraft was filmed from over my shoulder

I still watch it and am still in awe of the experience

I want to go back and do it again

I am proud to say that I have 30 minutes in G-BMSB in my logbook

    Cheers

  5. Can we concentrate on the plane please.......

I am a big Aussie gentleman (the missus says there is no such animal....just thick blokes) and require at least a 45" wide fuselage at the cockpit

I am interested in your design as I like the morgan sierra, but am interested in the evolution of the basic design as a build project for my retirement

  6. Spent some of my miss spent yoof making gunpowder with a friend of mine (he still is)

First year high school, serious case of boredom and Wow.....off to the hardware store, buy sulphur and saltpeter in 1 pound bags, grab all the charcoal out of the fireplace, mix it together, spread on a baking tray and dry it in his Nan's oven (luckily his Nan had an electric oven) and then use it to launch marbles out of various size pipes just to see how much damage they would do or how far they would go.

We spent quite a few weekends engaged in this activity

PS. Mum had a copper copper when we first came back to Melbourne in the sixties. Heated by a gas burner

And yes, she had a copper stick as well (ex broom handle)

  7. I am going with Tori Tours. Three days at Dayton, then on to Oshkosh for the week. Accommodation at the University (all you can eat buffet breakfast) There are about 60 people going.

I have also booked a flight in the Ford Trimotor and a flight in the B17

I have been told that one of the best places to catch up is Caddys at the university. But then again, any place is a good place to catch up

  8. Had a couple of TIFs in Drifters over the years and in 2008 started learning to fly in a Gazelle at Tyabb. Love Gazelles and Drifters, moved on to Jabs, 170 and 230 and last year got my RPL. Bought a PA28 Cherokee Cruiser. Highlights of my flying is a taxi ride in the tail turret of a Lancaster and a flight out of Biggin Hill in a T9 Spitfire

    Cheers
